AISmoked, get more ram as vista is a memory hog. customer bought a dell laptop with vista & 512 meg of ram, slow as molasses. told her to get at least a 1gig stick which she did & now has 1.5 gig of ram minus what the onboard video uses.

I hate to say it, but if you do not know how to get into the BIOS you shouldn't even consider overclocking. Plus, like people have told you, you will not benefit much even if you can OC.

With an ASRock board too, they're not very high quality. Even if you do pull off a successful overclock, there's no guarantee the board will even survive it for long.

That's very variable depending on what equipment is used, and also luck.

AISmoked,
How far, is a moot point, because with on-board graphics, you are severely limited in overclocking ability. The small amount the MB will allow, would not even be noticable! Even if you could overclock it more, the heat would be an immediate problem, with anything but a good CPU cooler. You would be far better off, putting XP-Pro SP/2 on it as vista is not going to run very speedy with that CPU to begin with!
Best Regards,
Russ

AISmoked,
The line should have read, "How far, is a moot point"! It means the small amount of reward you could get, isn't worth risking burning up an older computer and winding up with nothing!
My advice would be to leave it alone, and keep your eyes open for a faster CPU! I do a lot of computer repairs, and I get socket A chips from time to time. I'll keep my eyes open for something better for you. The only one I have at the moment is an Athlon 1700+, but I come across a fair amount of 2200+,2400+ and 2500+ Athlons. If I find one, just pay the shipping, and it's yours!
Best Regards,
Russ

AISmoked,
I'll drop you a PM! They seem to come in bunches anyway. Just recently I sold an Athlon 3200+ Barton core. I don't give those away though as they still command around $150-$160 or more. LOL!! Google that and you'll find a number of them on e-bay. If I can't fine one I'll give you the Athlon 1700. It's faster than the Sempron 2400 because of the higher front side bus! 333MHz vs 266MHz. Your motherboard supports the faster fsb!

Russ

hi im new to overclocking but i have read all over the internet that if you overclock the cpu you are reducing its life because of heat and volatge ect. if i overclocked my new core i7 920 chip and kept the voltage the same with liquid cooling and the temperature is the same as if i didnt overclock it then will it last as long as if i didnt overclock it
thanks for any help :)

you will definately need to raise your core voltage to overclock to any decent range, otherwise using water cooling is a waste - you might as well just use the stock cooler. I had an e6750 running 1ghz over it's stock speed and well over-volted, still runs fine after 18months I've just replaced it with a new pc though.

rubixcube,
I have to say that you were lucky! I had my E6750 to just over 4GHz over-volted to 1.57v for about 10 minutes, and it ruined the chip! It took 9 months for it to slowly fail, but fail it did! LOL!! Not a bad OC though 1.34gHz worth! After 10 minutes of running 4GHz, it would never go above 3.55GHz again, but I had to keep raising the voltage every month or so to keep it stable. When I started having memory problems and corrupt files at 1.5v, I knew it was time to RMA the chip. The replacement ran at 3.8GHz at 1.44v with no effort at all.
Best Regards,
Russ

Not necessarily, "over 1GHz+" could easily be 3.75Ghz, done at 1.5V which should be safe.

Sam,
It all depends on the luck of the draw with the CPU. The E6750 I got as a replacement from Intel ran at much lower voltages than the original did, and it took a good deal less than 1.5v to get to 3.8GHz, at 1.44v. It got to 3.4GHz before I had to add any voltage at all!
