I'm assuming you have a Wiikey... If so, then make sure that it is updated completely to the 1.9g version. That should fix the problem.
Sorry to repeat the question but dont you need 1.9g to play SMG? i can play SMG perfectly..ill try the 1.9g disc again just to make sure

So I guess this was all caused by disc read errors?
As for the original having issues, i beleive this is the case with all DL media on dusty wii's at this point?
Maybe all testers were heavy smokers ;) Better ship those wii's back to nintendo for a free cleaning ;)
I wonder if nintendo will release some more free goodies! Disc slot tobacco/dust screen!

Has anyone tried the new BrickBlocker 1.3R2 on the DL DVD9 backup to see if it works? I am going out to buy some DL DVD's right now and I'll test it once I get it, but I was just curious if anyone had tried it yet.

Ok, I have a big problem.
I have brawl (the DVD5 version single layer) and a wii with d2ckey (region verride)
But i still can't play brawl, so what should I do? I can play mario galaxy and other games, but when I try to play brawl it doesn't read the disc! why is that? could some one make a minitutorial or something for the d2ckey? please... I really need help, I'm so dessespered... I can this anymore, If I don't play brawl today I'm gonna cry! T__T

Ok no more questions.
READ IF YOU ARE TRYING TO UNLOCK CHARACTERS
Here is the method I used. From a webiste called Pinkgodzillagames.
1. Start by changing to Stage Select rule. You'll want the fourth option, "Junguri."
2. Now return to the Brawl menu and select Special Brawl. It's the one that shows an image of a Mario hat with bunny ears.
3. Next change the first category (the one with the % symbol) to Tairyokusei and and the third category (the one showing the bunny ears) to Hana (it's the first option). Hit "okay" at the bottom of the screen. The game should take you immediately to the character select screen.
4. Now select your character and a character for the computer. When you select the computer's character, you'll notice the number 150 appear next to the image at the bottom. Move the pointer over the 150 and hit "A." Now push up on the control stick to reduce the computer's HP to just 1.
5. Start the match. The battle should last all of one second.
6. Repeat step 5 until a new challenger appears. Defeat the new challenger (Luigi, Sonic, etc.) to unlock him. After about two or three hours of this, you'll have all the characters unlocked including the final hidden character Star Wolf and his obscure sidekick Star Bear.
This method took me exactly 2 hours to collect all hidden character. Very easy just have patience. Also jsut for reference here are the unlcoked characters and how many VS matches it takes to unlock them.

I regionfrii and brickblocked the iso.
I put it in and Brawl showed up on the channel. It didn't ask to update, but its just a black screen after you click on the channel.
Im using Wiikey and Taiyo Yunden DVD-R, any suggestions?

If anyone can help a noob...
If I have the DVD9 version, without doing the whole DVD5 discswap scenario will it work?
In other words, what do I have to do to get the dual layer version to run on its own... is it possible?
I have 1.9 USA Wii updated to 3.1

Ok i have been following this thread from the begining and im a little bit stuck. I have read every thread and i dont see the answer to my problem. Here it is:
Didn't burn the 5gb Rip of Smash
Downloaded dvd9 rip of smash
Extracted and burned at 2.4x on a Memorex DVD+R DL disc
Did not run brickblocker, regionfrii or any other tools.
Put the disc in the wii, and went to disc channel
Accepted all the update stuff and started the update.
Unplugged Wii at 15%-20% and started it up again
Problem, it still wants to do the update!! Now i am thinking i need a brickblocked version of the game burned and i should be alright, but i dont wanna waste $5 DL if i dont have too. Also could someone tell me where to get brickblocker if this is the case? I want to make sure i can get into settings when this is all done, so i dont wanna do the entire update as half the people say they cant get into settings after, and half say they can.

No need to swap now ... thanx a lot to put this new version that quick
So to resume for the newbs
1 - be sure to have your 3.1 os in your wii
2 - be sure to have wiikey 1.9g install
3 - be sure that you have your forced region in the wiikey config set to on
4 - Burn a Dual Layer Version of The Game that have been patched with wiibrickblocker
5 - Put in the wii ... and play
( i removed the 15% step with the dvd9 or dvd5 non-bric .... does we still need to do so now ? ... please confirm and update if still needed )

This is a very helpful post. However, I have a D2C key. Should I still patch the ISO with the new brick blocker? Or will I still have to go through with the update and just have dual channels?

Here is how i got my DVD9 Smash Brothers Brawl working:
Downloaded release from newsgroups, DVD9 release on alt.binaries.games.wii
Burned to Dual Layer DVD9 DVD+R Memorex Disc at 2.4x
Popped it in the wii
tried unplugging method at 15%, didnt work
did full update, got dual channels, but can still get into settings mode NP
Began playing the Crap out of this KICK ASS GAME.
