---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wii firmware IOS37 update was released on March 22 as reported by Wiibrew.
It appears that the update is designed to disable hacks and exploits that allow running homebrew material.
This firmware update has nothing to do with modchips or games. If you plan on using any of homebrew material, such as the "Homebrew Channel" hack, games modified with Trucha Signer, or Datel's Free Loader DO NOT UPDATE YOUR WII!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW SYSTEM UPDATE 3.2U IS OUT:
Safe for Wiikey and some other chips.
Also safe for SMG and SSBB games.
As stated, system and drive performances do improve as per official specs.
Unfortunately there are no games carrying the 3.2 update for the purpose on unbricking.

(This thread needs your help - post here as soon as you hear of new firmware issues)
I have not been able to find a thread here on AD or a web site that has a concise list current and past firmware updates for the Wii, and also list wich game performs which update
I would like to make this thread a reference about firmware updates and I need your help. I'll keep editing this top post adding any input I receive from you.
Before we begin, if you have come to this thread because you Wiikey is not working, you NEED to read how __666__ was able to solve this problem following my suggestions: Start here and read the next 9 posts to see how all worked out.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1) HOW TO UPDATE YOUR WIIKEY
Read the procedure in the SMG section below. Links to original wiikey resource are here. I woul also read, before starting the update procedure, the info on what FILECHOP and GCOS are, also included below.
---------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT AND WHY OF WIIKEY UPDATES
>> The Wiikey is a chip that accepts firmware updates to enhance its features and to improve compatibility.
>> The latest update for the Wiikey is 1.9g (released by the Wiikey team to counteract firmware changes as installed by Super Mario Galaxy
>> Config discs are used to change the Wiikey's settings, including, but not limited to activating REGION OVERRIDE to allow playback of images from region other than the Wii's one. (There two config discs: 1.2, and the more recent 1.3)
>> The Wiikey also has a failsafe feature that allows users to recover/reset the Wiikey in cases of a failed update or any other event that leaves the Wiikey firmware non-functional. In this case users must use the 1.9b Recover disc
---------------------------------------------------------------
READ THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1) Use DVD-R discs. Use Good quality discs. Burn them at 4x
2) If a disc does not work, burn another copy
3) Keep in mind that the 1.9g update runs twice. Once for testing, and then for real. Let it run twice, until you hear Homer's voice
4) After the 1.9g update, you might need to run a CONFIG disc in GCOS mode to turn REGION OVERRIDE back ON. [Tutorial and links abou GCOS discs are provided below]
5) If something goes wrong, like loss of power during the Wiikey update, remeber that the Wiikey has a great Recover Disc. Burn that as a GCOS disc and let it run 3-5 minutes and your wiikey will be back in business
6) Make all the preparations ahead of time. Read this first post in its entirety. Relax. Everything will be fine.
7) Running discs in GCOS format will require the use of a Gamecube controller. I reccommend running the Config and Update files in GCOS mode since it seems to be very reliable that way, however, especially if you do not have a GC controller, you may opt to filechop the images and burn them normally (without making a GCOS disc). However, particularly in cases when you Wiikey seems to be experiencing problems, consider unning the discs in GCOS format.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Official Wiikey Resources
Those of you looking for the 1.9g Wiikey update and the 1.3 config disk, here are links to the files. I was able to get them from the google cache of the official site.
(If the extracted images are smaller than 1.35gb, please, filechop theem before burning them to DVD)
A) Update your Wiikey to the Latest Firmare:
1.9g beta fix
B) IF things do not work quite right, you need to turn REGION OVERRIDE On using Config Discs:
Config 1.3 (Config 1.2 - Use this if 1.3 doesn't work)
If neither Config 1.2 and Config 1.3 works for you, then use the HACKED 1.3 DISC to turn the REGION Override back ON.
C) If your Wiikey is not responding to either Config Discs or Update ones, then try to revive it by using the Wiikey Recover Discs below:
1.9b Recover [Link to a short but useful 1.9b Recover discussion]
-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
Padded files for those who are Filechop-challenged:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
2) FILECHOP and GCOS TUTORIAL
It seems that a lot of people lately are having problems burning the iso of the Official Wiikey resources.
For a wii to read a disk, it must be about 1.3gb in size (approx a GC disk) because otherwise the life span of the laser on the DVD drive of your wii will be lowered. however downlaoding 1.5gb off a server can be very tiem consuming and expensive. So the way about it is to use filechop, it increases the file size from abotu 30mb to 1.5Gb by filling the rest with garbage data that cannot be read, however the Wii will read it as it will have about 1.3gb of data on it
So here we go with a short filechop tutorial followed by a GCOS one:
1) Create a folder
2) place the iso you want to burn in that folder (The iso vcan be the 1.9g update file, or the 1.9b recover image, etc.)
3) place filechop.exe in the folder (the filechop.exe file is in the official config.1.3.rar)
3) create a txt file with whatever name you wnat in the folder. The txt file must contain the following text:
filechop.exe imagename 1459978240
Change imagename to the name of the file you are filechopping, for instance bootdisc.us.iso
4) Save the txt file
5) Change the extension of the txt file from txt to bat
6) Double-click the bat file and there you go
7) Burn the image
------------------------------------
If you need to make a GCOS disk of the file you just filechopped, then use WiiUI.
1) Under GCOS Disc Maker select the correct REGION for your system
2) If you are making a GCOS disc for 1 file, then leave the NUMBER OF GAMES set to 1
3) Click on CREATE DISC
4) give a name to the GCOS image you are creating and click SAVE
5) Select the image you are making a GCOS of [remeber to select the type for ISO or GCM. Click OPEN and let the GCOS maker run
Once the DOS window closes you will have a GCOS image (with the name you selected at bullet 4) ready to burn
6) Burn the image at 4x and you're good to go. (Use DVD-R since they seem to work better for the Wii)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3) CURRENT FIRMWARE ISSUES AND RESOLUTIONS
------------------------------------------------------
WiiChess (PAL) semi-bricks Wii with 3.1(U): No fix as of now.

Reported SEMI-BRICK Firmware Problems and Solutions
[As of December 11, 2007 Super Mario Galaxy has the highest and latest Firmware, therefore it should be used to 'cure' all semi-brick problems for US/PAL regions. For Japanes Wii use Wiifit(Jap). It is also IMPERATIVE that you use the same region as your Wii]
[Note that all problems are caused by playing games from regions other than that of your Wii system. To correct a semi-brick problem you need to update to a higher firmaware either by using the Internet, or using a game with firmware update from your Wii's region.]

4) INFORMATION ABOUT Super Mario Galaxy Courtesy of brido84 from this thread.
Super Mario Galaxy (SMG) contains a new type of copy protection. To play the game with the exception of D2CKey you will need to update your Mod chip firmware to the latest version downloadable from their respective web sites (WiiKey 1.9g, Cyclowiz 3.6, Ect).
SMG is not region compatible, this means you will only be able to play SMG from the same region as your Wii, even with the most up to date firmware or an authentic copy of the game it will only work if its the same region as your Wii.
SMG requires an update from the disk to be installed, this makes it incompatible with Wii Brickblocker.
SMG is very picky about the media it works with, If your have DRE's try using ImgBurn at x2 or x4 and quality media (I've used Verbatim DVD-R x16 burnt with ImgBurn x4 and it's working).
Wiikey update Method (No need to go to 1.9b first)

If you're having update "issues" read below
Step 1: Run the update that SMG requires prior to installing the
1.9g fix.
Step 2: Run the 1.9g fix (burn this image w/ ImgBurn which is free).
Step 3: You will be prompt to run the update by either using a GC
controller (press A button) or by pressing reset (I was
using a GC controller for my update.
Step 4: You will see a % bar at the bottom. Once this update
completes you MUST run the second update!!! You will see a
WARNING to not turn off your console during the second
update. Once this is done you will receive a message to
insert SMG and to restart the system.
Step 5: ENJOY the game!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You will need to run SMG and it will prompt you to run another system update, do it. After that your Wii will reset and you'll be able to play!

Most people I see having issues w/ updates and/or fixes only run the first update thinking that the second one's the same thing; it's not.
* I did this on a US console w/ the NTSC (US) image.
** The 1.9g update is in .rar format. Extract the .rar file to a
specified directory. You will have 4 files: JAP, US, & PAL (I
believe). Burn the .ISO for your console's region and burn using
ImgBurn. That's it! I hope this helps.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your WiiKey will need to be set to region free mode, this can be done with a config disk found at the WiiKey website prior to the Wii 3.x firmware, after this you will most likly need to download and burn http://rapidshare.com/files/48731676/config1.3.zip.html
Boot up with that disc. It'll ask for a Wiikey config disc, stick in the 1.3 disc, Turn on region free, save, reboot.
Should now be able to boot up 1.3 config disc straight.
WiiKey common Problems
Q: On the initial test once it reaches 100% it says error test failed! check your connections and try again.
1)Poor connection between WiiKey and board, Test connections (multimeter), re solder possibly using long wire method.
2)You may have a clone WiiKey or Something else, Worth having a look inside your Wii if you havn't already.

If you have a US Wii:
1) Upgrade to 3.1U
2) Install wiikey update 1.9g (US)
3) Play SMG (US) and let it update
It will be fine if you keep everything within the system's region.
NOTE: Use wiibrickblocker to check the region of your images

When you say to download the wiikey update v.1.9g, are you referring to the BETA HOTFIX, or the original v.1.9 on the wiikey website? Also, is the BeTA HOTFIX v.1.9g safe?

it is a great idea rafadawn !!!
for information you should separate update by region...
ex : my semi-bricked jap wii (with 2.2U inside) were unbricked with jap SMG to the 3.0J firmware (and without the 1.9g beta wiikey update, still in 1.9b)
so, were did you have your information about USA SMG with the 3.1U firmware ?

The update for the Wiikey is the 1.9g BETA HOTFIX from the wiikey website. (Even though it is a Beta release, everything works fine)
We use the Recovery disc 1.2, from the same website, when, once we update the Wii to 3.1, it will not read the Config disc any longer. Therefore what you do is you make a GCOS disc of the 1.2 Recovery disc, use that to turn Region Override ON, and then you're back to normal.

BTW the PAl SMG comes with 3.0E on it. My Wii was at 2.2E and SMG put it upto 3.0E.

A GCOS Wikkey config disc is used when, because of a firmware update, the Wii, although modded, is not able to read a normal Wiikey Config disc (the ones from the official Wiikey site).
In that instance, we use the GCOS Config disc (look at the link under Resources in firs post) so that we can access the config screen and turn ON the Region Override of the Wiikey. After this is done the Wiikey will be back to normal.

The GCOS discs available from the page linked at the bottom of the RESOURCES section in the first post, are the 1.3 config discs for the Wiikey.
Here is the description from that page:

Yes. Absolutely!
The reason I have this thread up is that when SMG came out it contained firmware 3.1u/3.0J for the Wii. That firmware disabled the Wiikey. The response of the Wiikey team was the fix 1.9g
As of now there are no firmwares newer than 3.1, and the wiikey fix 1.9g works perfectly for it. However we need to be careful with upcoming games. Nintendo might try to devise a new mod-chip-dosabling firmware. That's why my reccommendation is to keep an eye on this forum to spot any possible problems.
