Unfortunately even if the total size of the disc is above 1.35GB, there are files that GCOS will not run if they are less than 1.35GB.

So far I have filechopped all files to be run in GCOS and everything has worked great.
Even with multi-game Gamecube discs, it is possible to shrink the images and put more than 3 on a dvd, however you will end up with some of the games that will not run. If you keep all images to 1.35GB and put at most 3 on a DVD, they will run just fine.

Therefore, it is indeed possible to filechop the config 1.3, the update 1.9g and the 1.9b recover disc, and put all three on one disc using WiiUI. However, considering that they are 'system' files, it is reccommended that you burn each of them on a separate dvd. Instead for GC games, three on a dvd (all filechopped) and you will live happily!!!

For filechop on the wiikey setup discs, isn't it just a whole lot easier to use wiiui and put one or two gamecube games along with it. Wouldn't this make it much greater than 1.35g, resulting in it working and not having to use filechop anymore?

@zezz,

If you've opened her up look at the back of the disk drive the chip should be installed there, where the WiiKey is installed in this guide, it could be direct onto the board like this or wires could be ran from here or slightly alternate points, but there should be something out of place around that area, then just take a photo and post it if your still not sure.

Rafadawn,

I already burned 3 GC games to one DVD without using filechop. I was wondering what the use of filechop is, if my Wii is able to read the 3 GC backups on one disc without filechop.

What I mean is that the Wiikey is still not compatible with a lot of free region games for example, Big Brain Academy and Quest of Dragon. If you own a JP wii, it is possible that you won't be able to play these games. And then the official website is down. I have tried it several days and it seems that the website is no longer available.

There are still lots of Wii games that don't work on the Wii console with Wiikey modchip. When I saw the new modchip d2d key or whatever, I would like to take off my Wiikey and, instead, buy the chip and install it. But I am not a technician, and how is it possible for me to do that?

@wiigame

You generally don't need to use filechop on gamecube games as they are normally allready the size of a gamecube game.

You use filechop on the WiiKey disks to get them up to gamecube size as this is the most compatible size(the Wii is more likely to recognise it as a GC game) in the GC emulator in the Wii.

If you like you can test it yourself and report your findings, but the most compatible method is using filechop.

@Jinkazuya

From what I understand many of the games that don't work on different region consoles don't work with many if any of the modchips (please correct me if I'm wrong I searched and couldn't find any evidance either way)

I think it that if they have not found a way around this problem by now then I fell it is unlikely that anyone is going to work on producing a workaround for this problem (unless it becomes more prominent with future releases).

I don't think the WiiKey team have disappeared and I think we will eventually see updates from them but these will most likely be to counteract new protection on the disk's rather than any improvements elsewhere, I hope they prove me wrong.

As for the D2CKey I've not seen anyone put one of these into an none D2C console (not sure if you could) and the D2C is not compatible with all out of region games "Partial region free support on Wii and GC original and backup games with different videomode (ie PAL<->USA, JAPAN)" and I'm still not sure about the ability to upgrade it.

(These are my opinions on the subject, using my current knowledge if any of it is incorrect feel free to correct me, it's how we learn)

When i am not using my wii, is it good to unplug it since it gets pretty hot when it is off on yellow.

When it is red, it doesn't get very hot, but I was wondering if I should still unplug it since it would urn out the bulb or run down the wii.

Can you also tell me the bad things about keep on unplugging and plugging in the wii every time I use it.

THANK YOU

It appears my problem was, as you correcty noted, not using a pure text file. I initially opened Notepad and typed in the text document but somehow it got associated with Word. Creating a "pure text" file as you indicated seems to have worked because changing the extension to .bat changed the icon, opened up filechop, and made the ISO 1.35 gb.

Thank you. I appreciate your time helping me (and time put in creating this thread).

The one this I'm still wondering is whether I need to create the GCOS file to turn back on region free IF I'm only making backups from original discs from my regions (USA).

Just an update. 1.9g update worked fine so apparently I did in fact have a WiiKey. I heard that Homer would say something about being nutz, but I missed the part about the screen showing a woman in black lace. My wife thought I had stuck a porn DVD or something in the Wii. Kind of funny actually.

Anyway, after the update SMG played fine. I did not need to do anything with the GCOS disc.

The only negative is that I was hoping the update would allow me to play again the group of 10 backups that stopped working (after working for a while) such as FIFA 08, Mortal Kombat, and Resident Evil. But, those discs were still not recognized by the Wii. Something apparently happened I believe after playing Mario Olympic Games. Fortunately, all other backups still seem to work. Strange about that select group of games, but no one has ever seemed to have an explaination for it other than media (but that wasn't the issue for many reasons I've already expressed in another thread).

Anyway, thanks to all in particular rafadawn for his knowlege but more importanly, his patience.

You're welcome!

PS: The only reason I reccommend making GCOS of the Wiikey discs is because they have the highest percentage of success in performing updates and configurations, based on all the threads and reports of problems I have been reading.

To begin with, I have to say that I'm pretty brave.

System: Wii US
Firmware: 3.1U
Scenario: updated the system via WiiFit (Japan)

As some of your might have know, the wii still works perfectly besides 2 duplicated channels. *I couldn't wait... it's xmas.. *

Back to the thread, I am trying to run Super Mario Galaxy (like everyone else..) and when I inserted the disc (Japan version, can't get hold of the US's), there is NO update prompt, and my machine is able to recognize the disc. So I happily clicked 'Start'. My Wii then happily went into a black screen. No Japanese characters or whatsoever.

My question is, is this as I have not updated my firmware to 1.9g? Or is US-Wii simply unable to play JP SMG? I have burnt the 1.9g update onto a dvd and inserted it into my machine, and it does not seem to work. May I ask, if it works, is there suppose to be a pop-up instead of entering the usual wii menu?

Thanks =p

1) Let me start by saying that you ARE brave. However you risking bricking your Wii completely.

2) We know that SMG does not run, do the other backups run?

2) If the other backups run, then try to run the 1.9g as a GCOS disc.

3) If all the backups do not run then you need to "reset/restart/awake' the Wiikey. Try the Wiikey config and update discs in GCOS mode, until you get the Wiikey to work.

Please, use the correct region Wiikey resources.

Finally a thread to stop all those other "how do i get it to work" threads! Bravo!

Just to note. You do not need to turn on region override to get any game to work if you are using a game of the same region!
and all I use the GCOS for is to sometimes drop the DVD speed. But then again you dont even have to do that either. And im running on a clone!

VGM out...

@ iciclex,

Mate you've got a US Wii and are trying to play a JAP SMG, if you'd read the first page of this thread or a bit of the SMG thread you'd have found out that;

Quote:
Super Mario Galaxy (SMG) contains a new type of copy protection. To play the game with the exception of D2CKey you will need to update your Mod chip firmware to the latest version downloadable from their respective web sites (WiiKey 1.9g, Cyclowiz 3.6, Ect).

SMG is not region compatible, this means you will only be able to play SMG from the same region as your Wii, even with the most up to date firmware or an authentic copy of the game it will only work if its the same region as your Wii.
So that copy of SMG wont work, and a US copy wont work without the 1.9g update.

You need to update to 1,9g and acquire a US SMG.

Ay rafadawn it should defo be a sticky. imho

Thanks for pointing that out - i will never succeed with the JP SMG.

Of course ideally should get a US SMG, but at where I am Wii games are sold on DVDs at ~USD4 per CD, but most of them are JP games. Hence I am lazy and usually buy those pre-burnt games instead..

Other backup discs are still working anyway.

Cheers and thanks for everyone's help =)

well my wii is JP. Now I have unbricked my wii with SMG. However, there is one thing that cannot be solved, which is the damn double channel things. The double weather channels still exist. How can I get rid of them?

now I am on 3.1J but SMG is still not playable. SOmething popped up in JP like "not visible 001" something like that. What's the problem?

@Jinkazuya

You can't get rid of the double channels but you can move them onto the next screen, just click on them with A+B and drag them where you want.

@ballerpm5

That sounds like your on the opening screen of a GCOS disk, if you are then you need to go into the menu screen and select the update or just burn the update normally and insert it on this screen and press A (you need a gamecube controller, the WiiMote does not work with this).

Congratulations rafadawn on producing an excellent thread and getting it stickied.

@brido84

Good reply as usual. You beat me by 2 minutes.

:=)

1) Use a gamecube controller

or

2) Filechop the image and then burn as a regular iso, without making it a GCOS image.

[The update itself will ask you to use th A BUTTON of a GC ontoller o insta, use the RESET buon of the Wii]

Just FYI:

If you like singing games like BOOGIE or HSM, or the upcoming Karaoke...

I found used LOGITECH and KONAMI usb mics for PS2 at Gamestop/EBGames priced at $7.99 and $9.99 and they work great for the Wii and the Xbox360.

If WiiUI is not working for you in making Emulator Discs, then try this one:

1) Download Wiiemus.rar

2) Follow this guide courtesy of Rudi
(Note: N64 emulation has very very low compatibility and it is very difficult to implement, so... NOT INCLUDED)

HOW TO CREATE YOUR EMULATOR-DISC (NES, SNes, GBA, Sega, and more:

1. Download and unpack WiiEmus.rar

2. Copy your ROMS to the corresponding folders.
(Make sure GBA-ROMS have exactly 4 / 8 / 16 MBytes... 32 MB Roms do not work with this EMU)
-->If you leave a folder empty, the respective Emulator isn't placed on the DVD (!)]
-->If you like to use zipped ROMS or Sub-Folders with ROMS sorted alphabetical, place at least ONE unzipped ROM in your SNES/NES/etc-Folders and all others zipped (or unzipped... it's your choise).

3. Execute "MakeWiiEmus.bat"
4. Choose your region (PAL, USA, JAP) and press <RETURN>
5. Burn the resulting "WiiEmus.iso" ... Have fun

--------------------------------------------------------------

HOW TO SAVE:
- After playing and saving 'in-game' go back to the Emulator-Menu and choose the SRAM-Manager to write your Savegame to GC-Memcard.
- Before playing load Rom -> load Savegame with the SRAM-Manager -> start Game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW TO UPDATE EMULATORS (I explain this by using SNES-Emulator as an example):
- Download latest Version of SNES-Emu here: http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=91 (you have to be registered to be able to download)
- inside the download there is a file named "snes9x150.dol" (or similar) -> copy it to SNES-Folder
- Within the SNES-Folder delete the "bootldr.dol" und then rename "snes9x150.dol" to "bootldr.dol"
- That's all folks

------------------------------------------------------------

Thx to @Emu_Kidid for his great GCOS-Multidisk-App and to the various authors of the Emus !
