If i play to many of my backup games using my wiikey, will it eventually burn up. I am asking, since I have heard of the wiikeys getting fried due to overuse.

Just enjoy your modded Wii!

Mine has seen a lot of use in a short period of time and no problem whatsoever.

Just added an alert about a Dec. 10th update posted in a separate thread. There is no verification yet. Just being cautious.

I have been reading A LOT of forums about the wiikey, and noticed that in many peoples problems they say that they are able to read SMG at first. They then say that after about an hour or two, their wii does not read any of their backups anymore including SMG. They also said that they had the latest firmware with the 1.9g patch. Why is this?

New to wii here. Bought a used NTSC(J) set and realised that it was a semi bricked set after testing it at home. Shucks.
1) Downloaded the 1.3 config disc iso and the GCOS version iso for JAP (both) and did the filechop for both. Burnt into a tested Verbatim brand DVDR- (which worked for the games I burnt). But was unable to run any of the two disc.
My question : Did I missed anything? Is it correct that both isos need to filechop first before burning into disc? What should I do now since I can't run the 1.3 config?
2) Is there any way I can find out if I am really using WiiKey since I dont have the Config disc?
3) Is it necessary to update my wii firmware to 1.9 if I dont play SMG ie. I use the update in SMG just to update my firmware to 3.1J so as to unbrick my set only and I don't play the game so that there is no need for me to update my firmware to 1.9?
4) If it is necessary to update to 1.9 regardless of whether I am playing SMG or not, can I just update straight to 1.9 and skip the region protection step (which requires 1.3 disc that I cant get to run on my wii) as long as I dont play PAL games? Will my Wii continue to work on NTSC/U & NTSC/J games?

Advice much appreciated in advance.

Hope you guys can help me pls.
Thanks.

1) Semi-bricked JAP wii can be unbricked by original SMG (Jap) or WiiFit (Jap).

2) Assuming you have a Wiikey that is having problems, you should run the 1.9b Recover disc.
Use WiiUI to make a GCOS of the padded version of the 1.9b Recover disc available here (Let it run between 3-5 minutes)

Let me know if that helps

1) Does Wiifit needs 1.9g to play as well?

2) Can 1.9b recovery be used on my console if it is just 1.2 when it was bricked?

If your console is semi-bricked then you will need to use an ORIGINAL disc of WiiFit to unbrick it (an original will play regardless of modchip)

If you're not able to access your wiikey any other way, then you need to use the recover disc. Follow the instractions that come with the official file.

Also, if everything goes well. but you still have problems with backups or using Config disc for you Wiikey, then use Config and Update discs made in GCOS mode. Tutorial on how to do it in in first post of this thread.

Just added a few reminders for those that are about to update, config, recover, their Wiikey.

I've also included the GCOS and FILECHOP tutorials from my other thread.

Here's what I have done so far :-
1) Burn 1.3 on Brand 1 (tested working with games) media DVDR- (doesnt work)
2) Burn 1.3 on Brand 2 media DVDR- (doesnt work)
3) Burn 1.3 GCOS on Brand 1 (doesnt work)
4) Burn 1.3 Hexed on Brand 1 (Gamecube disc detected, ask to insert original 1.3 and press button)
4A) I insert the original 1.3 and pressed reset button on the console as I don't have a GC controller. Nothing happens.

I remember reading somewhere that there is another 1.2 version for consoles that are unable to run 1.3. Can some kind soul point me to that version please?
Thank you.

Does anyone know if TDK+R DVDs work for wii backups? Also, I heard that Verbatum-R DVDs and Memorax-Rs DVDs work all the time for Wii backups. Can you please tell me what type of the discs work, or just tell me if all of the discs from those two brands work.

Thanks Rafa, I will try this out.
If all fails, can I just update to 3.1J using SMG and leave my wiikey firmware as it is. As long as I dont play SMG, will the new 3.1 update still work?

Is filechop.exe only supposed to be used on the Wiikey setup discs, or are you supposed to use it on all of the Wii game backups that you create.

@wiigame

I use verbatim DVD-R x16 they're a popular chioce, also Sony, and TY02's are good options.

Just the WiiKey updates, they need to be expanded to GC size.

You Wii backups should already be at Wii game size 4,699,979,776 bytes.

@ntw2121

The hexed disk is a version of the 1.3 config disk that will load up on a WiiKey when the regular one wont (due to region free being off and Wii at 3.x) and allows you to put the regular one in and configur your WiiKey.

@vaporixm

Yes, if your unable to turn region free on and update to 1.9g then you will still be able to play all your backups except SMG, and possibly other new releases post SMG, but supposedly the originals still work.

when i unarchive the 1.2 config .rar file all of the files are .bat instead of .iso, is this a problem? had no problem in the past burning these updates, but for some reason i'm stumped this time. just looking for some pointers on how to burn this disc, thanks.

Double click on the bat that matches your region. That will creat the 1.2 iso that you will need to filechop and then burn as a GCOS disc.

Wait I don't really understand why you need to use filechop on the wii setup discs if they are very small sizes. Wouldn't the wii disc laser reader probably have an easier time reading a wiikey setup disc since it is a smaller file than a Wii disc? Please explain what the use of filechop is.

THANK YOU
