Just added links to Wiikey files already padded. They can be burnt straight to DVD without need to Filechop them.

Is it better to use the update with the update on SMG using a backuped or real version of the game. I am asking this, since I want the best results. Please tell me if it is better to update the wii using the real SMG or a backup.
THANK YOU

It makes no difference whatsoever.
Just follow the steps. (look at the post immediately above yours by jaffacat )

I'm a little paranoid about bricking my wii so if you guys could help that would be great. I have a fairly old wii (US) with a wiikey. i have never updated the firmware of my wii or my wiikey. i haven't played any recent games with it but was hoping to. Do i have to upgrade my wiikey to 1.9g if i'm not going to play SMG? and just to make sure i got it right, I should upgrade my wii with SMG, then use the config 1.3 disc to upgrade the wiikey to 1.9g. Any help you could offer will be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like your on the opening screen of a GCOS disk, if you are then you need to go into the menu screen and select the update or just burn the update normally and insert it on this screen and press A (you need a gamecube controller, the WiiMote does not work with this).
insert what update. i thought the 1.9g disks made with the filechop was the update. also i am using a gamecube controller.
this is what i've been doing. i insert the disk. the menu pop up. i click BOOT DVD. tells me to place disc in drive and press A. I press A the I press start when is says GCOS MultiGame DVD. its says setting audio then it goes to screen where it states GAME VIDEO MODE OPTION. it gives me a few option i press Y for NTSC then the screen turn green for a second then restarts. this always happen and no update ever occurs. PLEASE HELP!!!

System: U.S. Wii
Modchip: Wiikey w/1.9g
firmware: 3.1U
I have the above system in my possession. Most of my games work flawlessly. For some reason though, SMG, when I initiated the update contained on the disc (AFTER updating the wiikey to 1.9g), stalled out right before the bar completed. I let the system keep running for about 10 hours. Nothing changed, so I reset the system. Everything worked fine after this, save for SMG (regardless of burnspeed, media, etc.) would crash every once and a while, and this was able to be remedied by a swap of a different burn of the game.
Fast forward to Christmas morning. I have been playing RE:Umbrella Chronicles, but I now have the Wii Fit. Of course, I want to give it a quick run-through, or rather, balance through! Anyways, the Wii wants to do a system update. Obviously, the Wii Fit version is the Japanese version, and my system is the U.S. version, so letting the update run wouldn't be a good idea.
My question is, is it because the SMG update crapped out (though in the end, DID actually update the system) that the Wii Fit wants to still update me? Is there any work-around for this, other than just waiting for another firmware update from Nintendo/waiting for another game w/an update on it?
Please help! This was actually a present for my wife, so a lot is riding on my fixing this dilemma!!!

Hi Erdrick,
I believe Wii Fit has a newer firmware update (3.1) than SMG (3.0) thats why it prompted you for an update.
But yours being a US set and your Wii Fit being a Jap game, it is unadvisable to try to update using your copy of Wii Fit.

I updated with (in this order) Wiikey 1.9g, SMG U.S., wiiconnect to 3.1U. Does this change anything? Perhaps the Wii Fit has an update that is newer than 3.1?
I am thinking about just downloading a copy of Wii Fit online, and using Brick Blocker on it. I am not sure whether Wii Fit can run without updating w/the update contained on its disc though..
My other idea is to have a family member (my wife's sister) buy a Japanese Wii, as she has been thinking of doing so for a while. This may be the best course of action, as there would be no problems or repercussions this way.

About a month ago I had a similar problem, but only my last 9 backed up games stopped being recognized by the Wii (all backups before these 9 and all backups made after these 9 work). Something on one of these 9 games did something. I've thought the culprit was Mario and Sonic Olympic Games, but Resident Evil is also in the bunch of 9 that were recognized by the Wii and now are not recognized.
I wish I knew what to tell you, but those 9 games I mentioned still don't work. I had hoped that updating the Wiikey to 1.9g would help, but it didn't. It's been about a month now and no one in this forum or another (where this issue is talked about more frequently) knows what the deal is. Some will say it a media issue, etc., etc., but its not in my case at least.
Sorry I'm not any help, but just know your not alone.

Got the list of the games and I am trying to go through all 9 of them on my Wii to see if i can spot any update/firmware/conflict problem.
In the meanwhile, I have a stupid question: have you tried burning a new copy of one of those 9 games?

If you need any more reasons about keeping everything within one region, you only need to look at the post by juggy111 , right below yours.
In general, Wiibrickblocker will stop firmware updtes, possibly stopping some games from working. However there are no guarantees, and you have to decide if playing an out of region image is worth your Wii.

Hi I tried everything to play Mario Galaxy. I followed all the instruction here but now my Wii is partially blocked and a error comes up when I insert the Wiikey 1.3 systems disk. On top of that it cannot read any of the backup games. I have tried the recovery disk with no success. The only things it recognises are the the upgrades 1.9b and g. Can someone help me to reset the Wii to its original state.

Assuming you have a US Wii:
1) Make sure your Wii is updated at 3.1U
2) Update your Wiikey to 1.9g
3) Run SMG (USA) and let it update
Use all US versions

1) Do you have an original Wiikey?
2) Is your Wii updated at 3.1
3) What region is your Wii from?
4) Are you using the correct region updates?
5) Have tried burning the Config 1.3 disc as GCOS and then using it to turn the REGION OVERRIDE feature back ON?
NOTE: When you say that your Wii recognizes the 1.9g update, do you mean that irecognizes the disc, that it can actually run, or that you can go through with the update?

Point taken. I actually spoke with my wife's sister and she will be getting a Japanese Wii this week. Problem solved, and my Wii doesn't die in the process.

To answer your questions;
1) it is updated but there is no way to confirm since the Wii is partially blocked.
2) Japan
3) Yes I'm sure
4) I did turn the Region overide on, but I must have had a flash error, because when i tried to put the disk back, an error message appears.
5) It recognised the disk and ran.
Also, i'm not too keen to play mario galaxy, but i would like to play all my other backups. I think when there was a flash error in the config disk it has turned the wiikey off (or partially off) anyway I can reset the thing. thanks

@syy96
1) Let's start with the partial brick situation (BTW - most likely caused by mixing-up regions):
WiiFit (JAP) seems to be able to unbrick Japanes Wiis.
Any chance you could rent/borrow/purchase the game and run it to unbrick your Wii?
2) The Wiikey has a fail-safe feature and the RECOVER 1.9B disc should be able to reset your chip:
Re-burn the 1.9b Recover disc using the padded file I have linked to in the initial post of this thread. Use good media, burn at 4x, and let it run 4-5 minutes
Where's the party?!?
