In some instances we need to run the update and config files in GAMECUBE COMPATIBILITY MODE, a.k.a. GCOS. In this mode we filechop the files to bring them to 1.35GB size, that is the regular size of gamecube images. That hugely increases the chamce that the image is going to actually run.

It has nothing to do with the Wii's laser, but everythin to do with compatibility and mkaing things actually run in a situation of distress

Wait I don't really understand why you need to use filechop on the wii setup discs if they are very small sizes. Wouldn't the wii disc laser reader probably have an easier time reading a wiikey setup disc since it is a smaller file than a Wii disc? Please explain what the use of filechop is.

THANK YOU

When I try the 1.9g wiikey update i get a "check your connection and try again"

From other posts, users have told me it is to test whether I have a genuine wiikey or not. The problem is, I really don't know what chip I have, I can play all backups fine except SMG of course.
Does anyone have a suggestion to find out exactly what chip I really have ..Thanks

You think it would be faster to try all the updates and (if safer?) to run all the updates to see what I have inside instead of opening it? Mainly cause if I do I really don't know what I am doing or what to look for lol

Thanks for the reply

You're free to try all the updates you want, the problem is not all the mod chips are able to be updated. Some even require specific hardware programmers.

List and comparison of Wii Mod Chips

Personally, I would open the case. But, that is something you have to decide.

One more thing, can't you call the person who modded your Wii? or the person who sold you the Wii?

Tried the 1.2 update but only got to a black screen with Japanese words in white. Seems to me that it is asking me to restart the console due to some error. Same thing happens when i restart.
Pop in Super Mario Galaxy and did the Jap update. Managed to run the game. I guess that means my console is updated to the latest firmware for Wiikey 1.9g right?
But one thing still cannot be solved, that is, I am still getting the opera browser error when I tried to go to settings ie. still in semi-bricked state. Is there an even newer update after SMG?
Which game has this update?

If you have a JAP Wii then WiiFit(JAP) has the latest firmware.

I just bought a 100 pack of Memorex DVD-R discs from office depot. They have dots all over the top, and I was wondering if anyone knows if these would work on for Wii backups since I don't want to open them yet until I am sure.

THANK YOU

There are several threads here on AD with people complaining about the Memorex media.

ok so far I was able to copy three of my gamecube isos to one file that is 4.07gusing Wiiui. Next, I don't really understand how to use filechop. Can someone please explain to me how to use filechop and what to do next.

THANK YOU

You filechop the Gamecube games before making a GCOS disc with WiiUI.

You only nee to filechop the games if they are less than 1.35GB.

Because you said that your GCOS image is a little over 4 GB then I think that the Gamecube images you used did not need filechopping.

Therefore, all you need to do is burn the GCOS image at 4x on a DVD-R and enjoy your first multi-pack Gamecube disc.

Well...The official website of Wiikey is no longer available. My question is how the heck we could have future update? There are still lots of Wii games that don't work on the Wii console with Wiikey modchip. When I saw the new modchip d2d key or whatever, I would like to take off my Wiikey and, instead, buy the chip and install it. But I am not a technician, and how is it possible for me to do that?

Do you need the wiikey to play wii backups that you save to a micro sd or sd card. If so, can someone please explain to me how to do this.

THANK YOU

I think I used filechop correctly. . . just seem weird that all you have to do is put the ISO in the file, filechop in the file, create a text document with the text mentioned in the thread and put it in the file, change the extention from .txt to .bat, and just double click the .bat file???

Nero let me burn the ISO though so I guess I'm on the right track. It says there is 41,713,664 or 39.7 MB on the DVD, but it also says O free space. I assume it filled or tricked the DVD into thinking it was full? Is that how it works? Cool.

I assume that when you say file you mean folder.

Yes that is all you have to do.

However, after you filechop the file, its size should be 1.35GB

yes, I meant folder.

But, it definitely shows 41,713,664 or 39.7 MB on the DVD but with no free space.

I can try it again I guess. After you put the text in the actual document and change the extension to .bat, when you click on the .bat icon is it supposed to just open that black box for a second and then it closes and that's it.

The actual "chopping" seems pretty quick. I wasn't supposed to click the filechop.exe file at anytime was I?

That is correct. The process is very quick.

make sure that in the text file you type the full name of the image, including its extension.

So, if the name of the file is filename.iso, do not just type filename, but filename.iso

Just to clarify something I wrote incorrectly above.

After I created the rich text file with the name "document.txt" I put "filechop.exe bootdisc.us.iso 1459978240" in the actual text of the document. I then changed the .txt extension to .bat.

When I double click the .bat file, all that happens is the text document opens in word. CONTRAY TO WHAT I SAID ABOVE, A BLACK BOX DID NOT OPEN. The black box I was reffering to only opened when I double clicked filechop.exe later on because I couldn't believe that just doubling clicking the .bat file was all that needed to be done.

Just to clarify, even though we put filechop.exe in the folder with the ISO and the text document that contains "filechop.exe bootdisc.us.iso 1459978240", we never actually double click on filechop.exe do we?

1) Do not use word to create a txt file. You need a pure text file, not a RICH text file. Use Notepad.

2) I still think that your problem might be that you do not see the file extensions. Check this

So once I open the wii up, is the chip supposedly reconginzable, am I able to directly tell what chip I have or is there any indication to let me know.

I've tried both wiikey and cyclowiz updates and none seem to be working so far..lol

For filechop on the wiikey setup discs, isn't it just a whole lot easier to use wiiui and put one or two gamecube games along with it. Wouldn't this make it much greater than 1.35g, resulting in it working and not having to use filechop anymore?
