Ok...I've tried a few different tutorials including this one..And yet it still doesnt work. I use a router and when I connect it says Connection Failed...And sometimes it says Connection Timed Out..So I tried connecting directly to my computer..And it says No route to Host...I used the appropriate wires and used the right settings...I've spent nearly 15 hours on this..And it still hasn't worked...Whats wrong?

hey I am new member here, and i followed every guide about this, and nothing worked,
However following the tutorial in this thread seemed helpful because for the firstime, whenever i connect my xbox to my laptop (using a crossover cable) i have a lillte sign at the bottom right of my desktop (to computers together with a YELLOW traingle with an !), and when i click it, Status: LIMITED OR NO CONNECTIVITY
Speed: 100.0 Mbps

a week ago this time i could FTP to my xbox without any hassel however i recieved a virus and had to reformat/reboot my laptop with a windows xp service pack 3 (i borrowed from a friend), and since then i could no fttp my xbox.

i am using EVOX. dashboard. and followed every single method here.

PLEASE HELP!

Have a good check into your firewall settings. Just turning it off doesn't seem to do the trick. but making an exception for your ftp app does. Plus..and I don't think it's mentioned in the guide. don't put a default gateway into your pc settings unless running on a router. and make the xbox default gateway the same as the pc IP..That should crack it.
Also try rebooting the xbox fully after every change.(remember to save and exit..I spent a few hours early on before I realised I was just hitting exit) It's not very good at applying changes on the fly.

"Just turning it off doesn't seem to do the trick. but making an exception for your FTP app does."
what do you mean by an exception for ur FTP?

i have turned off my firewall (from the little shield icon in the bottom right corner), is there another way i could turn it off, or is there another firewall apart from this one?

thanks for the help

If you go to control panel and then firewall settings there should be a tab at the top labelled exceptions..check that whatever ftp app you have is listed in there and that the box is checked.. It's a bit funky getting it to work but when you do work it out you'll wonder what was so hard.

Also double check all the numbers on both the pc and the xbox.. still gets me sometimes. and that the ftp is set to enable on the xbox.. The xbox IP should be on the dash screen..if you have a skin that isn't showing that info change to one that does while you're setting it up.

I was just FTP-ing fine, until this blackout hit, and now I can't get through. At first it said the problem was the server reset, now it just times out. we've used the same IPs, same settings, same method, but nothing is working.

any ideas on what I can try?

I would appreciate any help available.

Is your PC IP the same as the default on the xbox? try that and check that passive mode is enabled in your FTP app.. Can't say for sure where it is but usually somewhere in settings. Otherwise try rebooting the box while the pc is connected. I noticed that the xbox hasn't assigned an IP in the dash.

It seems that some people are struggling with this whereas it works first time for others... Here is something I put together last year.

XBOX NETWORK SETUP GUIDE

1. disable any firewalls (or set them to ALLOW when trying to connect to your xbox).

2. Disable the LAN connection and connect the crossover cable to pc and xbox.

3. Right click the LAN connection (under START/CONTROL PANEL/NETWORK CONNECTIONS), click "properties", under the "general" tab, go down the list, click on "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" then click properties again. Use the following settings;-
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (leave blank)

Click OK.

4. On your desktop, you need to see an icon labelled "My Network Places" (If its not there, right click on your desktop, click "properties", click "desktop" tab, then click "customize Desktop...", tick the box at the top for "My network places" and click OK, and again OK to exit display properties).
Right click on "My Network Places" and select "add new network place", then click the writing which says "sign up for online storage or connect to a network server", a wizard thing pops up, click NEXT, the next screen brings up a list of service providers, highlight the 1 which says "Choose another network location........." then click NEXT, in the space type this
ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.1.200
click NEXT, the next page is the name, your choice, I just put XBOX on mine, click NEXT, then untick the box (open this..... when finished", click FINISH

NOTE: ALL THE SETTINGS ABOVE ARE ASSUMING THEY ARE LEFT AS DEFAULT ON EVOX, IF YOU CHANGED THEM PUT THE PASSWORD BACK TO "XBOX" AND THE IP BACK TO 192.168.1.200 OR THESE SETTINGS WONT WORK!!!

5. On xbox, goto settings and make sure it says "use static IP" YES.

in network settings put..
IP 192.168.1.200
SUB 255.255.255.0
DEFAULT 192.168.1.1

6. Reboot your xbox, on evox dash it should display the IP as 192.168.1.200 (if it does not take note of step 5. and make sure the IP is set to this).

7. Re-Enable the LAN on your pc, a bubble pops up "LAN Connection 100.0 Mbps ..."

8. Finally, double click the "My Network Places" icon on your desktop and open the folder named XBOX (or whatever you specified in step 4.) and it should show you your xbox hard drive (C,E,F,X,Y,Z and D is the DVD-Rom).

thanks 2 xboxd00d over at xboxscene..(with slight edit 2 make it work 4 me)....

Yup...that's the guide..
