i have scaned my copy of the ps2 game I have found what it use it Libcrypt and this what it does the first one performs a control check on the disk to discover if it is a copy, the second, based on the result of the first one, decrypts a block of data and crashes the PS2 in the case of an incorrect result. Although based on the same code, the two routines have been altered a few times, to the point that in the last evolution (LC3) they have very little in common with the initial basic code it tell you how to bypass at the site it is http://www.megagames.com/psx/psx_libcrypt_tutorial.shtml

I'm a UK gamer and an avid fan of Rugby League. I've been reading your thread with interest, I'm pretty keen for this game to be patched but a little concerned you're so reliant on Sonix. Unfortunately Rugby League is not yet considered a huge sport in the UK. Rugby League 2 probably isn't even stocked in every game store throughout the country only certain regions which have a decent rugby league fanbase. If anyone decides to crack this it will probably be for the challenge to be the first rather than cause they actually want the game itself. Had this happened with Pro Evo or Fifa it would be a different story.
I only know the basics about game copying and it is my opinion that some form of patch is required. I remember when the first PS2 modchips were released and you could only play games copied to CDR! So if a game was on DVD and over 700MB you needed to rip the movies etc to get to fit onto CDR. I also recall EA had some sort of copy protection which required their games to be patched if you transferred them to CDR. This was no longer a problem when the EA game could go straight over to DVD, no patch needed.

I can confirm two things, I have a messiah chip, the back up version of Rugby League 2 boots as far as the main menu. From there you can only press triangle to go back a screen. You get the annoying rugby player gesturing at the menu as if to say what are you waiting for but you cannot select anything from the menu and you cannot press X. The original game boots fine with the modchip installed. If it's possible to disable my messiah then I don't know how to so having a chip installed does not stop this game from loading (for me). Interestingly I have a mate whom also has a messiah chip (diff PS2). His back up of the game only takes him as far as the Tru Blu screen, he can't even get to the menu. This baffles me, both back ups were from the same source copied in the same way. I know a few people have reported they cannot boot the original if they have a modchip, this baffles me cause surely the company are narrowing their market even further. If you buy Rugby League 2 and can't play it cause of your modchip then you're gonna take it back and swap it for another game or get a refund. You're also gonna be even more determined to get a back up version cause it's the only way you'd be able to play it! Makes no sense to me at all.

Has anyone tried copying the game to PS2 hard drive and playing from there? I ain't got a PS2 hard drive so I can't try this method. I'm just trying to explore all angles. Even if it did load up from the hard drive I'm not sure what it would tell us but I'm sure it would mean something to someone!

Point taken, if all games was protected or just the major ones like Pro EVO or FIFA, then you'd still have ppl out there, just like on the C64/AMIGA/SNES/SMD/PC and so on.. I thought it was a huge sport in some areas, considering the Super League thing was given better reception than here in OZ... And to patch this game, yeah sure it's a challenge, but it'll help others who have modchips to atleast play the damn thing instead of switching the mod off which becomes rather annoying.. It certainly made me feel a bit better when i got the patch of the net and then applied it on the .bin file when MediEvil came out with protection.. To be honest, i hate copy protection... I've always hated it, ever since being on the C64 scene... Then you get to understand the politics of companys like Sony... I used to work for them... Lame... They are a two faced company... In one hand they are against piracy, and on the other hand they urge you when you buy a pc get and you are backing up 'THINGS' why don't you buy a SONY BURNER? Hmmmm... Double standards to me... That's why i left... Patience all

sugarcult,

every game is protected with libcrypt, and it doesn't need to be cracked as the protection is actually burnt on the disc using Alcohol/Clonecd/DVDdecrypter by reading the subchannel data.

peace

Dude, NRL is only big in OZ, and only a little bit in the UK... Same as Super League or the Tri-Nations... Rugby Union is a hell of a lot bigger than league... Alot more countries play union than league... Soccer is HEAPS bigger that league or union... You put a new copy of FIFA, let me say LIMITED EDITION (just an example) the a NRL game LIMITED EDITION... I'd lay $100.00 that the FIFA game will out sell the NRL game... Look don't get me wrong, i wanna see the NRL game as much as anyone... Let's just hope it's soon, coz i wanna play this game too...

Dan_87...

Wot do ya mean? All protection gets written over by a patch that gives NEW info to load and ignore other routines in the main program file...

There might be a prob with getting someone to do a patch... The game isn't that big in the US or Europe, but really, who knows... No one thought a patch would come out for the PsX game of Sydney 2000 did they? It was released in the UK aswell as the NRL game was...

Booboo...

I backed up SWB2 in 5 minutes, no problems.

As for backing this game up, it is clear that no conventional methods will work, and for the majority of us posting in this forum it is beyond us to attempt to develop a patch...this is why we are relying on the expert hackers out there.
