How about we bring back the blue-ray talk.

should the ps3 have a 2x bd drive. it will be barely faster than the slowest read speed of a 12x dvd drive. what does this mean for the ps2? well, at 2x, the read speed is 9MBs. compared to 8.2-16.4MBs of a 12x dvd(gets faster when the data is on the outside of the disk).

Load times anybody? The 360s are fairly long, and its not looking very good for the ps3.

as for the space issue. elder scrolls oblivion, which was assumed to be taking up 4 disks, took up just over half of a disk. and that is for a very large game.

i think blue-ray is just sony's way of pushing their own format. which is just sad. first betamax, then mini disk, then memory stick, then UMD, and now blue-ray. its sony's way of telling the consumer "we want more of your money".

on the plus side with load times. game devs will (hopefully) get more creative with them. Test drive for Xbox had pong during the loading screens, which sometimes gave you a reason not to press start at the end of it.

should the ps3 have a 1x bd drive. game over. movies need 1.5x max. should the ps3 have a 4x bd drive. expect the ps3 price to be out of reach.

either way, i think blue ray was a bad idea for the ps3 from both a price and performance standpoint.

ps. being a psp owner. i actually hope the media functions of the ps3 are non-existant. it seems with the psp, sony is putting far to much effort into competing with the ipod, and not enough effort into the games

i heard microsoft are trying to buy the rights to make a hd dvd external drive (which theve done)AND AROUND a year after a multi hd dvd and blue ray disc drive (external again)

just rumers though. i also heard sony has all the rights to blue ray. and this blue ray knowing sony probally will have tons or bugs. after all why are they delaying the ps3 because of the security on the blue ray.

Monthly US sales (April 2006)

Xbox 360: 295,381 [1,504,724]
PlayStation 2: 206,995 [39,458,926]
Game Boy Advance: 169,115 [37,455,961]
PlayStation Portable: 162,438 [4,332,872]
Nintendo DS: 138,427 [4,447,092]
Xbox: 38,987 [15,737,984]
GameCube: 38,028 [12,046,319]

I noticed that the sales for the xbox360 have taken off now here in the US. I am sure that the 360 being hacked to play backups helped sales a bit. I got a confession though, sony is crazy for those prices they released for the ps3. I am going to wait for the systems to both release the same game a few times. With the ps3 costing so much more the games had better not even look close to the xbox version of the same game. It had better be better for all that money. It probably wont though. Honestly i think they will be as close graphic wise as their predecesors were. If sony cant show me a big reason to get the ps3 with some great exclusive games....HA HA... I am not kidding when i say my money will be spent on a xbox 360 and not a ps3. Sony needs to try to compete price wise unless the graphics are going to be so much better that everyones mouths drop upon first glance. And yeah i have been a PS fan for a while but i got to keep it real. Sony is crazy with those prices, regardless whether it has a BR player or not you have to stay competitive price wise. They may be setting themeselves up for poor sales in the future.
Sony better get it together or a lot of fans may be swithing sides on the calvary.

in the ps3 and x360 war to come thread i posted links a little bit ago about price compaisons of the ps3 and 360 to all console releases, one pic with acual price and one adjusted for inflation. go take a look at them.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

regarding the read speed of the Blu-ray disks

the disks will actually read a lot faster than normal DVD disks because they are totally different things
Blu-ray.com/faq/" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.Blu-ray.com/faq/

"According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future."

@Kc210

Why post the same thing in numerous threads? If everyone done that this would be a pretty pointless forum. Good points though.

What are you're thoughtd on the future of storage? I think it's a good way to show that our technological evolution is far from slowing down (which was predicted).

What about disc storage?

'According to T3: Pioneer goes beyond Blu-ray, Pioneer is developing an optical disc that will blow away the hard disc in most of our PCs in terms storage capacity, holding 500 GB of data. How so? Pioneer's lasers are ultraviolet, which have an even shorter wavelength than the blue.'
500GB!!!

What about the future of hard drives?

Currently being researched is Holographic memory -
'Holographic memory offers the possibility of storing 1 terabyte (TB) of data in a sugar-cube-sized crystal. A terabyte of data equals 1,000 gigabytes.'

The next, next-gen is looking very promising, The question is who'll be headlining the industry.....

@ mudearies
well, personally, i dont think sales for microsoft xbox 360 will ever be worth looking at in japan. LOL.... but here goes.

Japan Weekly Sales (May 8th - May 14th)

1. DS Lite - 91,895 [1,475,286]
2. PSP - 27,127 [3,430,962]
3. PS2 - 21,138 [22,320,139]
4. GBA SP - 6,317 [15,630,967]
5. NDS - 3,438 [6,505,958]
6. GBM - 2,628 [503,566]
7. X360 - 1,355 [117,765]
8. GCN - 1,069 [4,102,038]
9. GBA - 40 [??]
10. XBX - 36 [474,489]
(Weekly numbers. Not Monthly this time)

The xbox 360 would probably have to outsell the ps3 by about 85% in the US just to make up the deficiet in japan.

the pricing of their games will be the same price as that the 360 games have. and do not tell me "omg they will be more from bluray" because a blueray disk costs very little to manufacture in material costing, and when owned by sony and produced by sony i dont think that will happen. plus the price is p to the games devs, you think they will risk losing sales?

and the console issnt even close to being the most expensive console. it comes in distant 7th place. sure it seems high, but the value of money seems to be going down. plus think of all you are getting out of it like linux, wifi, web browsing, downloads, free online, bluray player, music, videos, and that pretty col tilt thing. i like the newer design. i fear change, ahaha.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

not to mention a bluray is 1000 americans, and the games should be the same price cause when games are multiplatformers and they are 2 differenet prices sony would face an uphill battle

actually i think games would be similar in price when released on different platforms, but then again why is ghost recon or oblilivion for the pc $49.99 and the 360 version is $59.99?
