But for USBAdvance.elf to work you need a USB enclosure that is powered on already.
I have an AC adaptor for mine, so it is powered on right away when connected to the PS2.

There is no disc check in usbadvance.elf
i m booting usbadvn with elaundch elf or my ps2 or fmcb i m trying everything.here is a post from sksapps frum
it seems that You need to have some of the laser parts to make it working.
my laser is not moving, but it trays to read disc. it makes this "click click" on start and than stops. service told me, that my laser driver is broken, and some electrical coil get burned.
when i open my tray i get same results as You, but when i close it, it works fine.
maby there is some king of USBA wersion that can work without laser...
dont know...
im sorry :/
darek.golab
If you booting through uLaunch then turn disc control too off.
You can also set "skip boot disc" in fmcb 1.7, or just assign your USBAdvance.elf to a shortcut key.
Then just press the button while booting up your PS2 with fmcb and launch USBAdvance.
it didnt work.i did it on fmcb 1.6 1.7 1.8.as i said before when i turn on cddvd check on LAUNCHELF.CNF then launch boot.elf in same dir .it didnt open.so i think i need to launch usbadvn without cdvd check or something like that.it worked before when my ps2 have a lazer.any help?

I really don't know or understand that as the laser has been broken in other PS2, and people get it too work.
You should have the disc control turned to "off" in uLaunch.
Is it a V12 you have. Just buy a new laser deck, they aren't too expensive.
That will fix the problem.

When you formatted to FAT32 did you use the USBExtreme Utility to format it?

Well that could be a problem then. You can't have partitions on the USB drive.
You can have FOLDERS however if you wish to store other things on it.

I have an odd question which I cannot seem to find the answer to: I use the usbadvance tools to put games onto the usb hard drive and that works pretty good (fmvs are sometimes laggy, but it's all good). But I ran into an interesting problem: you can't move them from the hard drive to your computer. Is there a good method for moving the games from the usb hard drive back onto your computer in the form of an iso (or something similar)?
Thanks and have a nice day

Happy new year
I've follow the tutorial very easily using the SM disc and renaming the ELF file.
So when loading it goes up to the USB Advance screen but no games appeared on screen. It says no usb drive is connected...now that's odd because it used the SWAPMAGIC.ELF in the usb drive, during the boot, to launch the program.
Any ideas what the problem is?
Thanks

Sorry I meant to answer quite some time ago, just that I don't use USBextreme anymore as I have the other types of hdd now.
YOu can copy the files back to your PC and join them using this file (CDDVD_Generator_by_JRLS)
Open the program, add the files that look like this:
ul.6A18BD85.SLUS_213.48.00
ul.6A18BD85.SLUS_213.48.01
ul.6A18BD85.SLUS_213.48.02
ul.6A18BD85.SLUS_213.48.03
ul.6A18BD85.SLUS_213.48.04
Make sure to add all with the same SLUS, SCUS etc.
Click on Destination and then name the file, then click build.

That is a SATA drive or no.
Not sure if that makes a difference or not for USBAdvance.
I am assuming you formated as NTFS first using Windows, then formatted as FAT32 with USBExtreme utility.
Copied games over using USBextreme.
So if all done correctly it just could be its not compatible.

This may sound like a dumb question (well actually 2 dumb questions), but I may as well ask them. I googled that enclosure and I am wondering if it may be incompatible. So could I get you to check 2 things:
1 - is the power switch on (not just plugged into the wall, but the actual switch)?
2 - is the LED on when the power is applied to the drive while it is plugged into the PS2?
Something you could try (that I needed to do for my enclosure as it had issues with ulaunchelf) is to have the enclosure unplugged (from the PS2) and powered off when you start USBadvance. Then power it up and give it a few seconds to complete the power up cycle then plug in the USB cable while USBadvance is sitting waiting to find the hard drive. I was able to get away with having the USB cable unplugged (but the drive powered on and good to go) while in ulaunchelf and just plugged the drive in while USBadvance was starting, but it still takes a minute or so to find the drive. I have a Maxtor Personal Storage 5000LE (with the factory drive still in it).
Let me know if this works for you (or helps). I am thinking that the enclosure has a power saving mode that it sits in until windows (or linux) tells it that the drive is ready to be used. If that is the case you would probably need specialized USB drivers for PS2 and I don't even know where to begin with that mess...
Good luck :)
Thanks and have a nice day

Well I decide to use another enclosure and another disc and this time it worked. So far managed to get going 9 out of 17 games. Not a good ratio but not to worry.
Anyone knows where to find an updated list of compatible games for this system?
Thanks

My guess then is that the enclosure is not compatible (possibly needs special drivers), but the actual drive shouldn't matter too much. And I have noticed that a lot of games do work using the usb enclosure, but the movie playback speed is horribly slow. I think that having an internal hard disk (which is possible with all versions apart from v14 if I remember right) is the way to go (or using the original/backup dvd). I use the USB enclosure that I have to play my cd backups as I have been having issues with the cd to dvd methods I can find.
Thanks and have a nice day

Nope thats not it. If you can see the games list, then the USB drive is fine.
Being the PS2 is only USB 1.1 you will not be able to get some games speed to play properly.
I have had where the intros and movies are lagging, but the game plays fine.
The problem is that not all games are compatible with a USB drive.
Sometimes you have to change the DNAS or IOPRP images to get the games to work.

Do you see your USB drive in "MY Computer"
If not go to Windows ?Control Panel? > ?Administrative Tools? > ?Computer Management?, find ?Disk Management? on the tree diagram. After that you will able to view all drives installed in your PC, select the newly installed hard drive, right click and choose ?initialize?, follow the on screen instruction and the hard drive will be initialize by your PC and assign a driver letter to it.
You can format the drive by using NTFS format in order to use up the maximum space of the hard drive.
Then using the USBExtreme utility, format the drive.
