I have a Wii PAL version, that i updated today to 4.2e. I know i should've installed the 1.9s wikey first, but it was to late.
I have read the instructions on how to fix this, but they were written in 2007.
So i have burned two copies of the "wikey.1.9s.pal.iso", but the wii doesn't read them. The problem is that even though the .iso is 1,4GB, when i verify, in My Computer, the DVD is 38MB. Is this normal, or is this because of the program i am useing.
P.S: i have never updated the wikey before.

I resolved this problem, i think it was because i used DVD+R, not DVD-R. I put some games that were written on DVD+R, and then the update, and it read.
But i have another problem, when i try to "Start", the console resets. I think it is because of the update (4.2e). So, is there any way to uninstall it?

I only have a Wiikey 2, not wiikey 1, but I don't think the 4.2e is your problem.
Others run 4.2 and 1.9s on the wiikey.
did the 1.9s install successfully.
Did you have this problem before you updated to 1.9s?

It didn't install, the Wii resets when i try to do it. I was proposing that the 4.2 update was the problem because i though that the update has some security software that doesn't let you install the Wikey update.
And also, maybe I didn't explain clearly, the Wii resest ONLY when i run the Wikey Update. The games work fine (those older games).

Hi. I am a complete newbie at this. I have a Wii with a Wiikey and I updated to 4.1, like an idiot. I have never updated the chip. Yes, I know, an idiot. Things have been fine for two years. I don't get new games often and the new Mario Brothers and Punch Out peaked my attention. As soon as I put Mario in it prompted me to update. Without thinking, I did. Now ALL original games will not load past the menu where I need to hit "start". All of my "back-ups" play fine, with the exception of Mario Kart and Punch-Out. Mario Kart loads and plays fine some times and others (or on the middle of the game) gives an "disc cannot be read" error. The Punch Out back-up acts like an original and will not load past the "start" option. The Virtual Console works fine.
What are my options here? Thank you very much for any help and/or directions.

Here are some faqs on updating your wiikey. Read the ones for over V3 System Menu
Q. Which discs do I need? There's so many.
A. This all depends on 2 main factors - whether you have a GameCube controller - and whether your Wii's firmware is 3.0 or greater.
Q. I have a GameCube controller and my Wii is less than v3.0. What do I need?
A. This is the easiest one to do. Simply download and burn the v1.9s firmware disc for your region (padded preferred) and pop it in your Wii. You can download and burn the v1.4 config disc - but most people don't actually need this - unless you want to change some WiiKey settings.
Q. I have a GameCube controller and my Wii is v3.0 (or greater). What do I need?
A. You need to download and burn the GCOS version of the config disc (v1.3). Run this - and set 'region override' to 'on'. Save the settings back and restart your Wii. Now download and burn the v1.9s firmware disc. Pop this one in - and run it through. You can also download and burn the v1.4 config disc - but most people don't actually need this - unless you want to change some WiiKey settings.
Q. I don't have a GameCube controller and my Wii is less than v3.0. What do I need?
A. Download and burn the v1.9s firmware disc and pop it in. As you don't have a GameCube controller - you need to use the 'reset' button on the front of your Wii. It's a quick tap to move the menu selection - and a longer press to select it. You can also download and burn the v1.4 config disc- but most people don't actually need this - unless you want to change some WiiKey settings.
Q. I don't have a GameCube controller and my Wii is v3.0 (or greater). What do I need?
A. This is where it's gets tricky. You will need to download and burn both the Hex'd and original v1.2 config discs (padded preferred). Firstly, insert the Hex'd disc and wait for it to prompt you to insert the original WiiKey base disc. Remove the Hex'd disc - and insert your other v1.2 disc. Now as you don't have a GameCube controller - you need to use the 'reset' button on the front of your Wii. It's a quick tap to move the menu selection - and a longer press to select it. Use this method to set 'region override' to 'on'. Save the settings and reset your Wii. Now download and burn the v1.9s firmware disc (for your region) and pop it in your Wii. Use the 'reset button' method to update the WiiKey's firmware. You can also download and burn the v1.4 config disc - but most people don't actually need this - unless you want to change some WiiKey settings.
Congratulations - you *should* now have a WiiKey at v1.9s (the latest stable version).
If you have followed the proper method, then I am not sure what your problem is.

Here are your options:
1. Upgrade your Wiikey to 1.9s
2. Softmod because Original Wiikeys will not run some of the newer games and it's highly unlikely that there will be any more firmware updates for the original Wiikey.
Oh yes, and I own a Wiikey modded Wii, so I speak from first hand experience.

Dailun ... I am going to do the softmod today. I'll report back here with results. I updated the wiikey last night, but have the same results. Mario Kart is a 50% chance of playing of giving me a read disc error. All other back-ups are fine. Thank you.

I also recommend the softmod and installing the HBC. Get cfgloader and run it off of an external drive. Best setup imo

Where do i download those from? The links on the first post don't work (the v1.9s update was downloaded from the official website). I really couldn't find them.

So i used this link to get them: http://www.teambadattitude.co.uk/Wii/WiiKey/ .
Now the game won't update, it says to Check my connection (the internet connection? do i need internet to run the update?). I tried to do this, like some guy on a forum said:
Quote: After you get the message to "press A or Reset to continue"
- Eject the disc
Then you can press A.
When it reaches 100%, insert the disc again.
It will recognize the drive and will ask to press A or Reset again... WAIT... eject the disc once more and press A or Reset.
Now I´m sure the update will work
But, if you run the SMG game update or the Super Smash update before updating the firmware. The games won´t work. Thta´s the problem I have with my Wiikey. Is is updated but I ran the games updates before the firmaware anf they are not running. Does anyone know how to revert the games updates?
It worked, but i have the same problem. Also, i can't run the 1.2 config (HEX) disk and neither the 1.4.
And if that is the problem, i repeat the question: "Does anyone know how to revert the games updates?"

Hi Guys,
I have tried the WiiKey 1.95 update disc and WiiKey Config 1.95 disc on my 3.1E Wii and the Update failed and the config disc did not read.
So I updated my Wii to 4.3e and tried again but still the update and config discs dont work.
Is there anything else I can do that will fix these errors.
The errors I am getting relate to the new back up discs I have just purchased around 12 of them.
They are all give me error 001 disc cannot be read.
All old back ups still play fine though?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Is there a 4.3, you must mean 4.2e
Not sure why you would update first, I guess you thought that was the problem.
I would try using the same brand of discs you used before.
Did you burn the images using imgburn. What speed did you burn at?

Hi Smokyrain, thanks for the reply. As mentioned I got the discs of a friend when my Wii was at V3.1 or 3.4e (sorry can't remember) I tried them but they did not work. So I then updated to 4.2e ( you were right again sorry my mistake) and tried running them again. I have had the discs twice of two different friends and neither work on either version.
I am just at a loss as to where to go next?
Is there any kind of Mod that can be done @ home that I would be able to follow. I'll be honest I am not very technical but with a guide I can quickly learn other things but Mods etc just seem too technical and not sure if its because it is or because I have never tried to tackle myself in the past?
Thanks again,
Tom

alcon38, yes you can install a softmod
This guide is well written and easy to do as long as you read and follow each step
I had just posted above a few posts, with info on using recovery discs for the wiikey, and the link to the guide is in it.
This link will take you to my post above
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/87/597460#4989487
as Dailun had said above also, I think its best to have a soft mod along with the wiikey as there probably will not be any new firmware for that chip.

Ok sorry to mither again but I have just realised that my Toshiba Sat L350 has no SD card reader (how garbage is that??) My old Acer has but the screen is goosed!
The guide specifically says do not use micro sd (shame as I have loads of these lying around) Is there an adapter or anything I can use or I am best just downloading the files using someone elses computer and bringing the SD back to mine to do the mod?
I checked my daughter's laptop which we got her for Xmas Advent Roma 3000 and that doesn't have one either. Are they being phased out or something??
TIA

Oh that is crappy. I just have lots of external readers I use for SD etc. I only have one laptop also that has SD card reader.
I am thinking either use someone elses computer to put the files on the SD card, or hook up an external monitor to your Acer laptop and use it.
Yeah the guide is right, its best too use SD card.

Any idea's?
Im going to nip town now and try and pick up a gamecube remote as I'm sure I read in a post here that this could be a problem.
Your advice is needed again! Thanks Tom.

Any idea's?
Im going to nip town now and try and pick up a gamecube remote as I'm sure I read in a post here that this could be a problem.
Your advice is needed again! Thanks Tom.
Hey Tom
Ok you don't want to use the gamecube controller.
The tutorial says : DISCONNECT (VERY IMPORTANT): any Game Cube controller, Game Cube Memory Card and USB Device from the Wii system.
Is your remote fully charged? I am not sure the problem there.
If it keeps happening you might want to post a new question in the wii section on that issue.
Do have another remote to use?
