Try going to My Computer-->Right click your DVD drive-->Properties-->Hardware and see if it's listed there. Most programs will tell you what make and model it is. CompUSA doesn't make their own burners (at least it's not very likely they do), so you just need to find out the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and then check their website.

What's the Media ID of the discs you're using. I/O errors while writing are usually a sign of driver issues, out of date firmware, or media that's low grade/not compatible with your burner. I don't think it's a driver issue at this point, it's too dangerous to proceed with firmware updates without being knowing your make and model of burner, so that leaves low grade/incompatible media. What's the Media ID of the discs you're using?
91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm Huge List of Media ID's (Thanks to DogBomb): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431

Try picking up some 4x or 8x Taiyo Yudens. This really sounds like a firmware issue, try to find out the OEM for your drive. Just for reference the manufacturer of your PC likely is completely independent of the drive. HP does make optical drives, I have no idea what drives are generally in an OEM HP. You could find out. Ask around HP.com, I'm sure they have some kind of live/email support techs. As for reesenice ask around CompUSA, one of the sales people may know who's the OEM for the drive. The main point here is that you can find this out, you're just going to have to do some legwork and research, the ball is in your court.

No, in your case it's media specific. Those are both crap media. CMC Mag is awful. Pick up some 4x or 8x Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims.
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm
106. Q. Where can I find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji and Sony have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no guarantee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. The exception is that Sony MIJ 8x DVD+R's will always code out as Yuden000T02. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

*sigh* I leave for a few mos to play games & what do i come back to? Ppl asking the same questions. WTH!? Listen up, YOU. Yes YOU reading this. Tokijin knows what he's talking about. STOP, mean it friggin STOP using crap media. Are you crazy? Need some meds /hands you meds *eat this. For real, there is great media (Taiyo Yuden /Verbatim) that lasts a looong time. There is good media (look at the list) that doesn't last as long, some coasters. Other media that plain old sucks. Really bad. Coasters, bleeding, cracks, chips off...it's crap. Pitiful. Why waste your money? Like only a few dollar$ difference per spindle. And guess what? YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR! So stop using crap media, stop trying to beat the system! It's not going to work. Crap media=crap. Bejesus Kreist isn't going to turn s**t into gold. He gives you what you bought. If you want to continue posting how "oohh i dont wanna use that expensive stuff" then don't come crying about what you get. Get a life....use Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim.

Hi! I'm new here so don't laugh at me if I write sth funny. I have a serious problem. Few months ago I burned PES5 and it works perfectly, but now I have few images of games (Black, GTA:SA...) and I cannot do this again. Everytime I burn a game and put it in my ps2 the 'Playstation 2' text appears, but then it turns into nothing. It says 'please put playstation 2 or 1 valid disc etc.'
I have TEAC DV-w58g burner and I use TDK and VERBATIM (DVD-R) only. I've tried Alcohol, DVD Decrypter, Nero. Everytime there is the same problem. Unfortunately I can't burn faster than x2 (my dvd burner info says that I can burn maximum at x4 but when I put blank DVD in, speed is automatically changed to x2) I have the newest firmware for my burner (H4S4).
Can anyone help me, please?
Peace y'all

Is your PES5 still working? It could be a dying laser, bad media (although Verbatim shouldn't give you troubles), corrupt image(s) ... also what do you use to load backups?

I think it's not dying laser because pes5 still works perfectly as well as other back-ups and original games (ps2 and psx). What do you mean by 'loading backups'? I've downloaded Black and GTA images with eDonkey. I think they are not corrupt... many people burned them and games works great....
what do u think about that? what can cause problem?
i'm going to clean my laser tommorow... maybe this will help... I hope so

You guys seem to know what your talking about so I have a question for you. I am trying to copy my ps2 games through DVD Decrypter, and everything works through the burning process, but when I put the game into the ps2 it says that I need to put in a playstation or playstation 2 format disc. How to I solve my problem?

OMG these questions keep coming, over and over. *sigh
How to play a burned game: You need a modchip (DSM & Matrix Infinity being two popular brands) -OR- a SwapMagic v3.6 disc. Why need? Because the PS2 has something called boot code on every original/factory game. It tells the system the game is legit & "boot me". DVD games contain one boot code, CD games contain another. PSX games, again another. (Another way of explaining is the boot code is like a version of DRM, but offline)
So once you can boot the backed up game, you play it like normal. It behaves 100% same. Unless you have the $20,000+ rumored cost for real PS2 DVD burner, you'll need the modchip/swap magic disc. NO, u cannot d/l & burn the swap magic disk either!! Read the thread from Page 1 if you need any help. All explained.
