I just bought a PSP 1001 with OFW 2.60 on it, I was tempted to buy a new 3001 but this one was half its price. After reading some of the posts in this forum, I think I need to upgrade to 2.80 so I can downgrade to 1.50 so I can install a CFW. Is that correct/simpliest path to take?
I want to play current iso/cso and watch MP4s? What's the best CFW for this; M33, GEN, HEN, something else? I want a permanent and stable custom firmware. Thanks

No. Simply - No.
Go this way, no need to modify your battery:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/781188
And by the way, the easiest way from 2.60 to 1.50 would have been updating to 2.71 and then downgrading to 1.50, the only easier downgrade than this was the MPH downgrader from 2.00 to 1.50. Not that you need this.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

No Simply NO??? omg, i was unaware that good ol' DA' methods weren't the most stable in PSP CFW history anymore?? Good place to start in my opinion.
Don't confuse the dude, i did encourage him to search the forums for similar threads allowing him to gain a bit of on the job experience at the same time. I don't get on the forums much but i strongly advise reducing the amount of silver plates if you get my meaning.
PStew637, a pandora battery and magic memory stick are excellent fun mate, if your not a fanatic but rather just looking for a quick fix then go with Eisherz' advice, my opinion, start with old skool mate, learn, then come on here and teach me something in a few years!! Happy h$!@acking to all, for homebrew applications of course!

I believe its referred to as 'personal preference', which is what you get when you ask a few thousand people or so.
Plus the fact that a stick and prepped battery comes in kind of handy when you need to modify or install custom firmware onto ANY 'pandorable' PSP day after day after day.
Oh yeah, and just one more very slightly not even worth mentioning not even slightly worth mentioning at all actually useful purpose that anyone could have done/written/invented etc. etc., it can zombify your psp, i.e. bring it back from the depths of hades........what....no way......never....yup it's true!
I now remember why i don't get on the forums much? A good spanking, that's wot i reckon, wadya think lads.

And still I wouldn't turn my 20$ original sony battery into a pandora one when I could simpy buy one for less than 5$ at www.dealextreme.com
Pandora battery method was never the most stable downgrade in PSP history, as I said, that was MPH downgrader, never failed.

History as shown us many opinions young skywalker, but after myself having modified and tinkered with thousands of platforms spanning over 25 years, (starting with ZX81), MY OPINION, is for a person who is new to the scene, again i repeat, especially one whom obviously knows very little about CFW and applying devs hacks, MAY wish to start his journey with a bit more spunk if you know what i mean, plus a pretty useful tool should he f%&*uck up his MPH downgrade
Give YOUR opinion, I'll give mine, someone else will give theres, and then we can all shut the fuck up, oh and lashings of ginger beer all round after! YAY
P.S. Sorry for having a different opinion other than yours, but then your probably a yank so my opinion is about as useful as a nats chuff....LMFAO...i bet your googling nat and chuff...HA HA....you are aren't you. PSSSST....i spelt nat wrong to throw him off the scent!

Ehrlichgesagt habe ich keine Ahnung, was ein "yank" ist. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich beleidigt sein sollte, was allerdings etwas schwierig ist, wenn man die Beleidigung nicht verstanden hat.
And if you haven't realized by now, English isn't my mother tongue (I can already feel the Hitler jokes coming from you, but I am way above that).
"Bricking" the MPH downgrader just showed that you have no idea whatsoever. You couldn't brick during the MPH downgrade (which was 2.00 to 1.50 by the way). You were maybe able to brick during the update process to 1.50 (if you were stupid enough to unplug your power cord or had a total blackout or something like that), but during the downgrade? Impossible (atleast software-sided, I don't take those kids into consideration who smashed their PSPs durnig the process). It wasn't a real downgrade, it simply tricked the PSP into thinking it was on 1.00, so you could update to 1.50. Yes, back in the days, kinda miss the PSP phat (or the good old DAX days, when a firmware sometimes was hacked before it was officially released).
PStew637, if you want to follow the Pandora Battery method, don't turn your original into the Pandora battery, you cannot use it afterwards as a normal battery anymore (atleast not without remodification) and a good 3rd party battery or a new original is way too expensive for that. Buy your pandora battery at www.dealextreme.com, haven't found a cheaper supplier yet. Then get a newer Magic Memory Stick maker, when you get one from 2009 or earlier you definitely have to update afterwards (chances are that you have to update no mather what MMS Maker you take, but with newer ones you don't have to update more than once or twice). Also nowadays you don't need the PSP to make a MMS.
The second oppinion would be to use ChickHEN, which might be the fastest method.
The 3rd one would be to upgrade to 2.71 official firmware, then use one of the many 2.71 downgraders (I like this one: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/755 it is a self-explaining video file) to get back to 1.50, then update with custom firmwares. Maybe the longest road, also nothing I would recommend to a total beginner, because you have to update several times. But it's definitely the road that gives you the most insight and experience.
Also I would recommend going to 5.00 M33-6 (the last Dark Alex firmware) and then to Prometheus-4 for 5.00 M33 or to 5.50 GEN-D3 and then to Prometheus-4 for GEN. Both are pretty stable, just a matter of taste which one you select. 6.35 ME is nice (got Shaddow of Memories and Persona to run on it, never worked on Prometheus-4), but the developer himself says he doesn't know how stable it is.

Didn't mean to start a flame war over the best method to install firmware. I chose the 5.03 to Hen to Gen then Prometheus. Hen took only 4 tries so I feel pretty lucky. Thanks for the help...

Your'e intimidating me aren't you? LOL.....LITTLE DUDES, IT'S NOT ABOUT WINNING, IT'S ABOUT THE COMMON SHARING AND INTERESTS OF HELPING THOSE WITH LESS KNOWLEDGE IN CERTAIN AREAS LEARN MORE THROUGH THESE FORUMS, NOT EVERY TOM, DICK AND HARRY TRYING TO MAKE ADMIN.
I got my gran to chain me up, nothing kinky mind, so as i wouldn't post a response and waddya know!
I have a choice,...either write up a tutorial for our esteemed German friend and the general public on ''HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A DIRTY HITLER AND REMEMBERING NOT TO PICK YOUR NOSE IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS WITHOUT WASHING YOUR HANDS FIRST'', or just say this........,
In the words of my father, a retired electro mechanical engineer and former avionic service technician, trying to teach me how to read an AVO meter when i was a teenager,.............'OH GOD NEVER MIND'.... LMFAO
Oh and one last thing for my German mate who i sincerely admire for his incredibly detailed psp hacking guide....Jekk tixtieq titalem noffs dak illi tahseb li taf, nahseb l-ahhjar soluzjoni huwa minn flokk tiftah halqek, tiftah widnejk.
And English is 1 of my mother tongues.
PEACE TO ALL

Who talks about winning? It's about preferances and the Pandora Battery method is definitely outdated for a simple downgrade/custom firmware upgrade (as could clearly be seen from your guide, which was created in 2007). Also Dark Alex' firmware is. Really few people are still using M33-6 without the Prometheus update. And b1gh3ad? It was quite annoying finding posts of him everywhere claiming the 1 in PSP 2001 was the version code (it's the nation code) and that you were limited to non-permanent firmware when this number was too high.

Realy, you should stop using your hand for that, there is something like toilet paper after all.

Kinda contradict yourself here, don't you?
Oh and by the way, due to the fact that the problem of the OP is solved already this is my last post in this toppic, I see no use in typing any more nonsense. You prefer the Pandora Battery method (and even creating a Pandora Battery yourself), good for you. It's outdated and not the best one, but who am I to force you to try something else?
Peace, brother, and Elvis has left the building (or was that too much Independence Day?).
