so I'm about to purchase a PSP 1000 since the research I've done seems to agree its the easiest to hack. The guy who I'm buying it from says he just updated it with the latest firmware on sunday which happens to be 6.31. Does this even matter when using the pandora battery / magic stick combo?

In my experience a pandora can downgrade any firmware. Well I have done 6.20 and below and they work fine.
