I've been away for a while. I launched a 2 hour internet search looking for a custom firmware for psp 3k. No dice.
So is this still only hackable via chickHEN and half byte loader? There is no permanent hack yet?

Yes. Also I wouldn't call Half Byte Loader a hack, you can only use it to play some emulators and homebrew applications.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

How is this possible? I thought the 3k series can't keep a custom firmware when you reboot!

Well I used a pandora battery and magic memory stick from a psp 1000 and it installed fine and runs fine.
But I did not think the battery would boot but it did and installed fine and he has been using it for 3 months now.

Technically impossible. Sony put in a protection onto the 3k mainboards that they don't support pandora batteries anymore hardware-sided. I bet you modded a 2k, especially when you called it a Slim and Lite. Those were 2ks.

Well this was a brand new black psp model number 3003. It put a fat battery in. (even though I did not think it would work. it booted up I installed 5.50 GenD3 and it installed and worked fine so far.
How am I supposed to mod? a psp 2k to a slim and light?
Simple if you do not believe me why don't you try it?
Then I read you wrote "PSP: Slim&Lite 2004 model with 5.50 Gen-D3" what model would that be? My friends I did for him was 3003

A 2k. The Slim and Lite was the 2k model, the 3k model was never called or advertised as Slim & Lite.

In all the modding I've done all the homebrew apps call this 3000 a "bright" not "light or slim"
@Igmutaka, in the interest of getting this topic back where it started, can you please post some screen shots or some other proof that you actually flashed a custom firmware to a 3k PSP. I think the community would call you a hero if you can actually prove this to be true. I know I would be very grateful.
Everywhere that I've read says it is still impossible at this time to flash a 3k series PSP with a permanent custom firmware.

Even though I agree with your statement. I go by what Sony calls their product not what others who did not make it call it.
All I know I tried 15 times to installed checkHEN on this psp 3003. Well the case said it was 3003 and I got it off amazon. Chickhen installed and when rebooted it was back to ofw no changes. So I got peaced off and put in my psp 1000 battery in it. I read also that is not supposed to work. It is a panadora battery I made from the info given. It booted and the app even read the machine as 3003 psp. Unless there is a actual way of doing a screen print of that when it loads up then sure.
But the fact is one homebrew will not work on all psp's even if it is the same model. I have downgraded and upgraded since the PSP originally came out and I have "never" as of yet bricked one.
So I guess I got lucky. as Chickehn is "supposed to run but don't but a homebrew that should not on a battery should not did. How? No idea. People have 2 choices try and succeed or it will not boot. People do not believe one person but themselves thats the easy way about it :)
Now I leave it as it is. Good day :)

While it is true that chickhen can be stubborn (sometimes have to try 20 - 30 times before it works for me) there are many people that can get it to work and has been proven to work.
In contrast, you are the first person that I have EVER seen claim to flash a CFW to a psp 3k and have it stick. Do you have a camera on your phone?
I'm not trying to argue or prove you wrong, I just know a lot of people that would love to understand everything about what you did if you really accomplished what you say you did. It could be a key to understanding how to make a tool to flash all psp 3k's

So what was the final verdict? Permanent firmware possible on PSP 3K or still just chickHEN?

Yes, still stuck on chickHEN, I've read that 6.20 TN-HEN was it, will come out before christmas. But it can only play homebrew games and emulator.

Hope that would clear the confusion.
check out this link to on the differences:
http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PSP-General/what-s-the-difference-between-PSP-2000-and-PSP-3000/m-p/39094895
compare it to the amazon site:

We already know how to tell the difference and identify a psp3k. This thread is whether or not the psp 3k is permanently hackable. Please read before posting.
Actually, if he was right, then maybe Igmutaka thought he had bought a 3k. Which is highly unlikely, considering the case he bought was saying 3k on it. The image now is 3k.
Just saying though, his post was relevant.

So with Mathieulh finding the psp master keys inside of the ps3, does this mean that the psp 3000 is fully hackable now?
