Heres something rather strange. This is not a -ROM disc! It's a TYG03 watershield. For whatever reason, it thought it was a -ROM after burn!

EDIT - This is a replacement for a VERY ugly looking backup. The LH-20A1H read it with little trouble. I couldnt believe it. One of the ugliest discs ive seen! This is quite possibly the best DVD burner ive ever had!

You know...this burner(iHAP422) doesnt surprise me when it produces this flaw! But given the LH-20A1H did it also, im at a loss. This is NOT a -ROM disc, it is infact a TYG03 Watershield! When I first got the iHAP it was closing discs in this manner! obviously with +R's no big deal, but with -R's it can cause playback issues! The current issue seems to load ok though. When I first got the burner, they would load VERY slow. I chalked it up to a bad flash out of the factory. Now im not sure what to think since 2 of my burners are doing it. Gonna have to look through imgburns settings. But I thought it was frowned upon to close a -R as a -ROM so the ability isnt even given!

Looks like my Sammy's can load it in 15 Seconds! So the flaw I was dealing with before is not present!

EDIT - Looks like the Dvd player doesnt care though! It acknowledges the disc as a -R. SWEEEEEEET! Still unusual though :P

You Guys are not going to believe this, but I've now had 5 consecutive bad Optical drives! One Pioneer DVR-116-DBK died yesterday in the middle of a burn, and the other one died today, also while burning. I couldn't even eject the disk until I re-booted the computer. When you play a DVD, the picture jumps all over the screen, and if you try to burn a DVD, it fails about 1/3 of the way through the burn. Amazing, really when you think that I got two bad Lite-Ons first, which were replaced by the poineers, and one of them failed almost imediately.

I'm going to call Newegg on Monday and see what can be worked out, as it's past 30 days, but I think they will see it my way and credit the sale. If they do I'm going to order a pair of Sony/Optiarc AD-7220s drives to replace them!

Stay Tuned,
Russ

Wow russ! Sorry to hear that :( The manufacturers have to realize that the burners are not entirely used for Piracy! I would imagine the masses chiefly uses them for that. Myself, I believe money is due where credit is due! But my point is, A LOT of people buy burners for legitimately backing up CRUCIAL data. And for this high of failure rate is total BS!!! Ive had some lemons myself in the last few months! And others in my tower I'm sure wont be counted among my survivors! I would rather pay 100$ for a burner, that has a STRONG chance of success and will probably burn 1000+ discs(E.G. early plextor models 716, 760), then spend 20 on a possible lemon!

To all manufacturers, Your screwing with family portraits, weddings, early childhood photographs that CANNOT be replaced!!! Take more pride in your factories and I WONT hesitate to pull out my wallet. THATS A FACT!!! :D

You know what it is. There is such a high demand for burners, that they ramp up their production lines to BEYOND recommended limits. Then they get flaws in there devices. I just hope to god, CPU's and other CRITICAL devices dont suffer from it!!!

Russ you do know that the AD-7220 drives are LITEON?? I'd check some power connections or something else as there is NO way you could have 5 failures in a row!!! That's INSANE is all I can say. Good luck to you and I hope the problem is solved.

Oman7,
It's funny. I've replaced one optical drive under warranty in the last 4 years, and then this! I thought it was very strange that I got two bad Lite-Ons to begin with. One did work, but it vibrated and buzzed so bad that I thought it would shatter the disk! When I got the two pioneers, and one went south almost immediately, I figured OK, I got a bad one. But now that the first one, and the new replacement have both gone bad, I have to start wondering what the heck is going on here! I should have just gotten two Sony/Optiarc 7220 drives to begin with and avoided all these problems. My oldest drive, a Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD-7170, is in my computer right now and burns and plays just fine! I guess I should have been suspicious when Newegg didn't want the bad Pioneer back! I'll just have to wait and see how Newegg handles this. I think that their 30 day refund policy will be seen as weak under the circumstances, at least I hope so! I firmly believe that an exception should be made in this case as I must qualify for some sort of record with 5 bad ones in a row! LOL!!

Given mass production, 5 in a row doesnt surprise me as much as it should! It is a jaw dropper though LOL. No matter what the issue(Mobo, Burners), hardware isnt made as tough as it should be PERIOD!!! There's no pride anymore!

Myself, the -ROM issue im dealing with, I think im gonna install windows 7 on one of my other drives. Because its now EVERY burner in my tower closing the -R discs as -ROM. Yes they seem to play but this is VERY unusual. Ive been itching to reach inside the HAF again anyway LOL. I love how spacious it is. Unfortunately I have to yank the iHAP422 to do it. Yes, I still have an IDE HDD in my tower! Mainly a storage drive. But im gonna make it my Windows 7 drive for more experiments as well as trouble shooter.

Oman7,
My Win 7 disk is on the shelf, along with Vista. It will remain there unless M$ allows removal of the OS without having to wipe the drive partition it is on. It will also have to work with all my present software and files, or it will continue to sit on the shelf!

GM, normally I would agree that there is no way, except except these drives have shown me that there is! LOL!! The jumpers are set correctly, I've tried 10 different brand new IDE Cables. 11 if you want to count the round single I tried in both drives. It's almost impossible to put the IDE plugs in the drive on wrong, and no way at all with the power plug! Both times now I've put the 7170 in when I pulled the drives, and it works just fine with no problems on the same IDE connector and the same molex plug. The problem is the drives! They don't work right in Oxi, either! I re-burned the failed burns with the 7170 and they completed without any fuss, and that drive has got to be at least 3 years old or older! It burns and scans very well!

Best Regards,
Russ

Well...as you can see, +R's are also effected by whatever bug is occuring! And its not just one burner. So far, its effected ALL the burners in the tower. So, it boils down to as usual, too many variables to consider. But I suppose the top ones being, drivers, windows settings, Overclock, South bridge, etc. sigh... wonder whats causing it. What ever the bug, the burn process seems to destroy the MID, and sometimes date!

So, russ...is it possible the south bridge needs a Volt bump? Because I just noticed that my last good scan was on the EXACT day I overclocked! Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!! LOL!

Oman7,
I can't see any harm in trying! The southbridge would be important to the precise timing needed for Burning DVDs. I'll have a look in OverDrive right now!

well...a 0.1v increase had no effect. However, im also looking at other variables now too. See...when I noted that the problem arose on the 14th, I started thinking what else did I do that day. And well, thankfully it wasn't too much LOL! My first thought was Grand theft auto san andreas. Well...a game shouldnt cause this. But I also thought that the disc has been in one of the drives this whole time. But that also had no effect removing it. I am now leaning toward an install of alcohol, or anydvd running in the background. But since I run anydvd in the background ALL the time, I really doubt that thats the issue.

I wanted to use alcohol to emulate the GTA san andreas disc. But the disc has info on it that alcohol wont/cant rip(yes, its the original)! But I havnt uninstalled it yet! So its Virtual drive is still running in the background! I will attempt that in the morning! All of these attempts, installs, adventures LOL, were performed on the 14th of march! Well...at least im the only one who uses my computer. Thank god for that LOL!!! I will post about my no doubt success in the morning! For I dont take coincidences lightly!!!

Oman7,
The virtual drive is probably the most likely problem. I need to get some help with Hyper-Transport and ACC. I have no clue what either of them do! LOL!! Maybe I should google it! LOL!!

5 bad DVD drives? I'm in the greensman's camp. What is your pc doing to the new drives that it's not doing to the old one that works. Strange and I have no fix or solution to offer. I have had over the years 10 dvd drives-they all worked and not one has died while I was using that particular pc.

garmoon,
The only drive I've RMA'd in the last 4 years wasn't really the fault of the drive. It was taken out by a bad PSU with 4 days left on the warranty. Ordinarily, I would be looking for a problem somewhere in the computer, but this has now involved 2 motherboards, a DS4H and a UD4H and two different PSUs, the 460w that came with the case and the 500w one I replaced it with. When the Lite-Ons came, one was obviously bad because it made so much noise and vibration and the other Lite-On wouldn't burn! The second Pioneer was basically DOA. Everything was working fine and then last Friday the top one quit in the middle of a burn, and then yesterday, the other one did the same thing. The drive that failed on Friday has been disconnected since it failed. I pulled the other one yesterday and hooked up the AD-7170 in it's place, Same cable, same power molex, and I've burned 6 DVDs since installing it with no problems.

I'm probably going to hate myself, but I'm going to get a pair of AD-7220s Sata drives. The other odd thing is that neither drive would allow me to burn at 12x with Shrink. My options were Maximum (16x) and then 4.2x. I've never even heard of 4.2x! If I use Nero Burning Rom directly, it gives me all the normal speeds! Before the drives went down, I had all the speeds to choose from with Shrink!

I've had drives that I've gotten rid of because they were noisy, but never had burning issues with them, I just never bought them again. I had a Philips like that once! Oh well, I guess I'll wait until tomorrow and see what Newegg says!

Best Regards,
Russ

Well...As you can see, Disabling/uninstalling Alcohol (a dvd/cd emulator), I no longer have problems!!! Something to note for future readers. Emulators while valuable, CAN cause unusual side effects! I must admit though. Elby's V drive is working flawlessly! Not for GTA SA though! Ive given up on that endeavor. I do have the original dvd after all!

An excellent burn there rob :D An excellent movie too :D :D

Dealing with yet another bug now. Most curious. Ever since I began running dual view, nero showtime has had an issue. See... I shut off dual view when im not running it. If I engage Showtime, and im not running dual view, it locks up! I dont know what the problem is yet. But if I am running dual monitors, there's no problem! And even funnier still, If I right click a video file (E.G. Divx file), and try to open with showtime, there is no issue dual view or not!!! Im really at a loss here. Whats REALLY weird is My windows get narly looking tracers when I attempt to move them out of the way. When I do that, its as though they multiply... cascade if you will! And the only way to end that unusual bug, is to end Dr Watson debugger! I thought that was a good program?

Here's the 16X burn. As you can see, its even better in a couple of ways. I dont worry about spikes of 3 on this media. My LH-20A1H Lite-on drive, has proven that it can read discs with PIF in excess of 80PIF!!! Dont ask me how, because I found that extremely impressive! So as long as this media is within the standard, I wont knock this media too much anymore! Drives are obviously in need of Firmware Revisions! This brand new samsung is proof of that. Ive noticed with each new burner, that quality rises slightly with each new revision! They need to concentrate on the inlead!

Well, luck is on my side today. Newegg is going to take back the two failed Pioneers and issue a credit. I'm going to order a pair of AD-7220s drives to replace the Pioneers, and yes I do know they are Lite-Ons! I'm going to give Sata Opticals a try! LOL!!

Newegg has the 7200s in stock. Only problem is that they are beige!

I like my Sata opticals(SH-S223Q)! :D They burn TYG03 VERY well! Though much like the Lite-on drives, they do prefer higher speeds. Which is fine by me! :D 4X TYG03 via Sammy. As you can see, it likes higher speeds as well(CAV write strategy)

To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Oman7,
I was editing so you missed what I added. Newegg has AD-7200s drives for $25. All they have is beige at the moment and I don't know if they will be getting any more, as I understand the AD-7200s is no longer made!
