Cant get subtitles on PSP

Im trying to add hard subtitles to a .mkv file so I can encode with handbrake to .mp4 to watch on my PSP. Ive been trying for days and so far I cant turn the subtitles on when I watch it, they show up when I check for them in VLC Media Player, but when I go to subtitle options on my PSP it says no subtitle options available and it ends up pretty much a raw file. I know how to sub in Virtual Dub but the file is .mkv and my laptop is a POS and to convert a 23 min show into any file Virutaldub supports would take at least 3 to 4 hours to finish while the speed is realtime.

Also I tried what people said was the best programs to do so, MeGUI and Avisynth but please dont recommend them to me. I didnt like them and after days of trying to learn them I couldnt even learn even the most basic script.
