Russ's Windows 7 is in the Twilight Zone I think or he got a version no one else has?
If you recall the name of the window(eg. power options), you can type it in the run/start bar and hit enter. Brings you right there. I LOVE this feature. Or if you remember only one word, you'll see a list of results immediately.

Windows 8 is gonna be hard pressed to impress me!

Problem: Windows user experience ratings are lower than expected.
Solution: Ignore windows user experience, it's notorious for under-rating good components and over-rating bad ones.

Problem: Control panel in windows 7 is impossible to understand.
Solution: View by: "Small icons". They automatically sort by A-Z, and actually make sense,

Problem: Windows picture viewer doesn't display GIFs.
Solution: Start using a proper GIF editor, otherwise just open GIFs in a web browser like everyone else does.

If you sort by Large or Small Icons you get the old Advanced Control Panel in XP which turns out to be "All Control Panel Items". If you view in "Category" you get the limited XP Classic view. In either OS I always use Advanced view CP, not Basic, that hasn't changed in function at all the results are the same.

Control Panel is far from impossible to understand.

If you know different then why would you state it as fact? Please.... Nice try though.

You could do that in XP too. They have changed some of the commands just like naming in the CP but otherwise the same.

I meant to say the Control Panel is much faster than XP and Vista. Overall, Win 7 is has fast as XP, although on some things it is a bit slower, at least the way I use it.

I thought on XP, it was limited to the exact .exe name? It could only "Run" the exact process name. Not sure how to explain, but windows 7 seems more intelligent about this ability. Certainly bringing up a list of options while typing is useful ;)

I don't miss XP. I'm a gamer, and I don't seem to be missing any abilities, or functionality :p So XP must not have been too good...

Heck, I've forgotten much about XP. That alone says something LOL!

Sam,

I know I can use a Browser. What I want is a viewer that can correctly display mixed content, just like Windows XP did

Thanks for the cheap shot about my over rated bad components.

I am viewing by small icons and it is not alphabetical, nor do they let you select it from the options.

Russ
um, what?

You have openly stated your score is lower than it should be. I stated that it under-rates good components.

You can't even give a compliment without being smacked in the mouth round here...

For the comment about bad components, I was actually thinking about the machine I have to use at work, which scores a modest 3.1 from only a 2.0Ghz Celeron D and a Geforce 4 MX. One wonders what sort of system you have to own to get 1 and 2 for your score!

As for the GIFs, I only place so much emphasis on finding an alternative as it seems such a trivial issue to discard an operating system for. XP support is on the way out, for example, 64-bit XP support is being dropped from Photoshop, and the limitations of x86's 4GB of memory are growing by the day. You have to be really desperate to want to roll back to XP these days, it's finally on the way out as an OS. I can't deny I will slightly miss it, but when I go back to using it from 7, I'm reminded of all the little things I'm glad that 7 improved on. Very seldom do I find things I prefer with XP, now that I'm fully used to the Windows 7 environment.

Steve,

On the disk it says "Windows 7 Professional". On the package it lists a part number of FQC-0469. On the right side of the disk it says "Includes Service Pack 1". When I click start, and bring the mouse pointer over the control panel button I get an icon, showing a monitor with a circle on the left side of the screen, and three bars on the right. I have no idea why it is different from yours or anyone elses!

Best regards,
Russ

The monitor thumbnail is exactly that. A thumbnail. It's the thumbnail for control panel. I have to click control panel to go into the various settings.

I have to agree with sam. The WEI(windows experience index), is nothing more than an idea of your components. I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith in it.

I'm not positive, but I believe the 8600Gt scored lower than the Geforce 210. The 8600Gt is a better card, if I'm not mistaken...

Oman7,

Exactly my point. All that shows is the thumbnail, no list! Yes, the Geforce 210 is a POS, and the 8800 GT is the better card. What makes the GTX550 shine is a higher Core clock (900MHz), Shader clock rate (1800MHz), Memory clock rate (4104MHz). and a larger bandwidth than the 210 or the 8800GT (98.5GB/s). I think I made the right choice for $89!

As to my computer, I'm pleased with it, and it's more than fast enough for me. Handles most Games well too! I've only seen one BSOD, and that was my fault. It locks up the computer if I try to run my old Business Sandra. It did work when I first installed it.

Best Regards,
Russ

Oman7,

Yes it is the better card by a wide margin. The same can be said for the GTX550 compared to the 8800GT. It's a virtual dead heat performance wise, between the HD-5770 and the GTX-550. Overall they are very evenly matched.

Russ

It hasn't changed much, maybe you're smarter now :), but you could do the same thing from the Run command that you can now. Some commands have changed by name as there were way more things you could run from the CONTROL command then there is now, as they have broken them out into their own commands but again I can run CP stuff in XP or Vista or 7 from the command prompt. I can give you a list from each if you want as I should have lists of commands stashed somewhere on my system since I still use CMD.

Kevin you'll like this; the latest version of AnyDVDHD (7.0.2.0) I installed on my new media center PC and it would not register my valid licence. I had to install a old version of AnyDVD and then upgrade it for my license to work. Way to go Slysoft!

Russ, I'm not sure I'm following you on your CP in the Start menu but more so what my point was is that you should not have the problems you are having and it must be a corrupt registry, shadow copy partition, system area of your HDD's, virus, or something in that line. Windows 7 really can't account for all of the problems you are experiencing. I've been down that road myself and it is too easy sometimes just to blame the OS. However I think Windows 7 corrupts much easier than XP and do not like the whole two partition operating system, I also don't think it makes it more secure having a separate small system partition as your active drive.

Now see Russ I did three quotes without triple posting. LOL :)

Although I do agree with you it is much cleaner to do them separate if Afterdawn would permit it.

I hate to say it but I knew what you meant and know you were not hacking on Russ. Plus I stated the same thing earlier in this post as I've been giving ratings of my RAM and other stuff using Windows BS rating system.

It's just not your day I guess. :)

Oooops that's 4 quotes in one post. LOL

I can see how russ would take offense. I knew what Sam meant as well. Ahhh the disadvantages of texting. ;) We can't see the others face, so we don't know exactly what's going on in there.

I've never had a problem with anydvd like that. My license expired :S Looks like I'm stuck with my version for a while. Money's tighter than tight!

Oh I've definitely picked up a lot more tricks than I used to have. I'm a better googler, and my experience usually allows me to trouble shoot even without internet. But I still have much to learn. My relatives think I underestimate myself. I don't like to be cocky...

I can understand what your relatives mean and your stance as well. It is true that when Sam used crappy hardware one could take offense but as you know and have experienced Windows rating system tends to be a joke and even though I don't support a lot of bechmarking tools there are plenty of better measuring tools out there. As to Sam it's probably my fault as I had him worked up so he has been on edge and comes across a little brash in that instance.

We all have more to learn once you think you've mastered something they through you a curve so it is a continual learning curve for all of us.

I've never had that problem with Slysoft before so I was surprised when it happened. I have noticed as of late they are releasing AnyDVD when it hasn't been thoroughly tested, lots of bug recently.

Well... the encryptions have been getting heavier too ;) I'm certainly nowhere near their league. I'm an easy decade away from that kind of programming. Wrapping my brain around some of the stuff is quite challenging. While other aspects are simply logical.
