I think I got mine up to about 192 MHz and it still booted into Windows but it wasn't stable. 2.088 is the standard speed for the 2800+, so I don't think your overclocking did anything. You can try using "CPU-Z" to detect the core speed and FSB in Windows. Also, once you get your system overclocked you can test its stablity by doing a torture test using Prime 95. Both CPU-Z and Prime 95 can be found by google searching those names. If the torture test fails, reduce the FSB and try it again.

When i got it to read as an AMD athlon XP 3000+ i just increased the multiplier but i left the vcore settings the same. Should i do something with that to increase it?

How did you increase the multiplyer? The Bartons should be locked, unless it's an older one. But yes, you have to chance the v-core to manual setting so you can go and adjust the FSB manualy. And you may have to bump up the voltage a little. Make sure to read all the other messages in this thread.

What are some settings that you would recommend for me? When i ordered my CPU it said barton on the cover. Whether or not its old or new is something i dont know. I guess it must be an older barton but i thought there was only one barton core on the 2800+.

I heard that in the last few years they started locking the 2800+. I don't know much more than that. What main board and ram are you running?

Ok, in the advanced chipset features in teh bios set the following things:
CPU Frequency Multiple [AUTO]
System Performance [USER DEFINED]
Memory Freq. [AUTO]
Memory Timings [OPTIMAL]
CPU V-Core Setting [MENU]
CPU V-Core try somthing like 1.700v... nothing too high or youll fry your chip... stay under 1.800
Now you can go back to the top and change CPU external to whatever you want. I would try somewhere around 175 MHz for startes. Test it with Prime 95 to see if it's 100% stable.

The thing you have to do to overclock is increase the FSB. Increasing the voltage is just to account for the extra power you're using. You might be able to get away with leaving the V-Core at its default voltage, but from what I understand, the system may become unstable. So yes, increase both the CPU External and the Core Voltage.

I don't understand what you are trying to ask about OC speeds. The cooling system I use is the Cooler Master Jet 7+ heatsink and fan.

Do you all think that 2.388 GHz is too hard on an Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton)

You can change the multiplier, but most likely, it won't boot, because it is locked. So you need to change the FSB. Yes, I have a 2800+.
2.388 is probibly too hard on it. Try a Prime 95 torture test on it. If the test stops with an error then you are clocked too high. Reduce the FSB and try again. I'm running 2.255 on my 2800+ and I was able to run the test for atleast 12 hours without errors, which means my system is 100% stable at this clock speed.

Nice review on Newegg, lol. I usually keep my Cooler Master Jet at about 3000 rpm. Nice and quiet and keeps the processor around 46-48 degrees idle depending on the room temp. If it gets into the high 50s or above 60 then you have a problem.

Sounds good to me, try testing it with Prime 95. Keep pushing it and testing it with Prime.
