you can't put in an original ps3 game to swap for a ps2 backup because the laser is in Blu-ray mode. Blu-ray laser color is different than the dvd laser.

I had the same theory when people were trying to boot ps2 backups with the game firmware bypass method.

In fact I think we would be fooling our selves if we have a community this large, and did not realize that there are some enemies present.

thanks pizzag that did answer it. I was curious because I remembered the ps2 checked only w/ the actual button. If the sensor is causing checks, theoretically, it should be possible to bypass the extra commands. Worst case scenario, replace the sensor board w/ another that is linked up directly to powering the motor. Hmm, mod ideas coming to mind, I'd really like to dive in there to take a look but I fear the ps3's $ amount.

I'm not to keen on the idea of soldering w/in the ps3, just yet either...you are a brave fella pizzag.

I opened the ps3 last night for the first time ever, got as far as lifting the sheet metal off the Blu-ray drive. I will do it again tonight. The ps3 case is flimsy as hell. Off topic, I previously said I'd paint the case, which I will, but found that the metallic letters inscribed on the side of the ps3 can be peeled out quite easily, so that after painting, one could put the stickers back in and it look somewhat professional. Taking apart the ps3, I believe many will feel the same way, due to it's "cheap feeling," will further the urge to hack it. I found the universal power supply at another radio shack, and damn, it was like 40 bucks. Pizzag, I take it you cut off the head of the output which lets you put the appropriate adapter on it and just electrical taped the ground and the 3v output?

That's exactly where i got my idea from to do this i googled ps2 eject switch, thought about it a couple nights and then tried it. and there isn't much chance of messing the ps3 up because all you're soldering in the ps3 is 2 wires to the eject motor. as far as the extra switches to retain original fucntionality, that is just so it works like it did when you bought it. if you wanted to play backups you would have to turn the automatic stuff off. and when you wanted to play originals of ps1, ps2, or ps3 just put it back on auto. and also, i saw on a certain ps3 news site today that they now have my tutorial up on their site prolly claiming that they did it which is untrue. this was my idea and i put it into motion. the funny thing is i tried posting it on their crappy forums and was banned for posting a link. i also have someone who is going to send me a ps3 bluray backup so i will be able to see if that works also. i can already tell you that it will, as ps3 games do not have checks YET. Yet being the key word. i've already gotten alot of emails asking me to do this to theirs, which is not a problem. and no, you do not need swap magic for this to work. just an original ps2 game will do the job.
Keep doing the great work pizzag! I'm very curious about the Blu-ray back-up thing :).It's a shame that the mentioned site has stolen your wonderful work! They deserve to burn in hell!!!

Ok, I tried this, and I am running firmware 1.70. Doesn't load PS2 back up, but it will still load PS2 originals and Blu-ray, basically everything works the same, I toggle the switch on/off, just cant get it to work. Not sure if I did it correctly... I will keep messing with it for a bit.

Woot! the first bad news I hear on this method. ur PS3 is PAL or NTSC? Is that ur PS2 backup can be run at ps2 before?(by mod console or SM)

Using a NTSC PS3. And yes all the PS2 back up works fine on my modded PS2.

As the OP is running firmware 1.51, it looks as though this exploit has already been patched.

Hmm... I just got PAL ps3 Fw1.5, planing to do this swap and stay the Fw at 1.5 for wait I$OL**der.
BUT PAL Fw1.5 ps3 can't play a lot of ps2 game, at least I update to Fw1.7.

Now I need to have a choice on my front,
1. Stay Fw1.5 play few ps2/ps3 game to wait I$OL**der.
2. Update to Fw1.7 with the swap trick to play lot ps2 game.

I mean it will look like running an American game on a Japaneses ps2 ?

Thanks in Advance

But, in theory this should!!! work with PS3 "back-ups" if you have a Blu-ray burner. of course like PS2 games have an encryption that was broken, Blu-ray does have one too.

That is total BULLSHIT.. First of all original PS2 discs have no encryption whatsoever.. The protection is nothing but the region code and ECC error data (uncopyable) which identifies it as original. It has nothing to do with the content of the disc. An original discs filesystem is identical to a copy. Thats why you can swap it once that info has been verified.

PS3 Blu-ray disc's entire filesystem is encrypted and thats why it will NOT show the files in Windows (but the disc can still be copied in RAW mode). Now the DECRYPTION CODES for the filesystem are stored in the uncopiable area of the disc (the first 20 sectors which are proteted by corrupt ECC hence uncopyable). This code is re-read subsequently and thats why all attempts to swap a PS3 disc with a Blu-ray copy have failed because it will not be present on the copy.

Just read this topic with great interest. Some great work done here. Can anyone confirm if this will work with the PAL uk ps3's? I only ask cos I heard they have emulation software inside for ps2 whereas other ps3's have a chip. This may be inaccurate but I thought it prudent to ask before messing up my warranty. :)

Hey Pizzag, great hack! I've been following this thread for a while and I'll definitely take my box apart to give this a try as soon as I find a suitable switch. Since I know my way around with a soldering iron and only paid about $410 for my 60gig PS3 here in Japan I won't be as worried screwing up as most people here seem to be.

I wish more people would dare to try it, though, so we could all collaborate and optimize what Pizzag started. For one, I'm sure we can get the 3 Volt from within the PS3 so that no external power source is necessary. C'mon people, let's break out the digital multi-meters and start measuring!

Yeah, no doubt!!! There must be 3v we could get from the power supply. Couldn't get 3v from usb since that is 5v. Also, instead of a three way switcher, how bout' using two arcade sanwa pushbuttons, as seen in arcade joysticks? This would look a lot better than the three way switcher!! You could even get the led sanwa buttons which illuminate!! I don't understand why we need a three way switcher, wouldn't a two way be enough. Aka, one button for off, one button for on????? This would be the bomb!!!!

Actually, I thought about this after I wrote this and went for a walk on the canal, that one pushbutton might only be needed if it's microswitch is of the kind that has a continuous power as well as the ground and normal pushbutton {+}. The two pushbutton method I said earlier would not work as there is no switcher involved. I would think however the one button method w/ continuity could work and look cool.

I dont know if a push button switch would work as it only has 2 positions on and off. (correct me if I am wrong I am no tech head) Well do you not need a 3 way switch? on(pull disk in) off on(Eject disk) Thats how I thought it worked.

I am all for this mod looking nice and tidy, so I am browsing maplins online as we speak lol
