Great job ChokeDYou, currenly i was workout on this trick as well.
keep go on than we can share the information.
I got an idea about 3 volt source come from, that is 60GB PS3 that LED on Card Reader or LED on ethermet cable. Not sure is that all LED is 3V or not, but u have a checking electric volt meter(forgot what name it is) may can try to check on it.

Absolutely awesome for using the intercooler for mounting the switch! Full credit to you for the idea! Ive been slaving away at work making a half decent case to mount the switch and you've done this. Well done! You've done a superb job! Looks very neat and tidy, downloading the vid now.
Cheers

Thank you for the nice comments.
I'll check that for you and see what I can find out.
There might be something there to use.
spriggsy stated that you can get a +5v source from the hard drive wires so I'm going to do some figuring with this equation,
divide the voltage drop you need = 2v = drop from 5v to 3v
by
current(ohms)5 volts in ohms
=
resistor I need to make the bridge(drop from 5v to 3v)
I need to find out how many ohms = 5v
It can also be done (I believe?!?) by this equation if I'm not wrong,
current times resistance = voltage in ohms
I hope this helps and please someone tell me if I'm wrong.

Yeah good job,
Still i don't know why you guys want to cut the sensor wires when you can just unplug it nicely.

I think he cut them to splice some new wires to it so original functionallity can be kept with the extra switches.
I didnt use extra switches, but i didnt cut the wires either. Thought i was gonna break the connector plug though it was that small!

Well, Yea, I did want to maintain original Functionality, that's why I cut the wires for the sensor but for the most part I did that because I didn't want to take a chance messing up the plug or the outlet for the plug. This way I can always go back and add wire to it or snip off some more wire and try again(solder) instead of risking the plug and outlet which can remain in tact doing it this way. I have a way (bad luck sometimes) of snapping stuff like that right off and ruining a project like this. :)

I have a question, if i wanted to play a backup of my ps1 game, do i also burn it in a DVD-R? I tried the trick using an original ps1 game and my backup on a cd-r but all that came up on the screen was an error message. i used alcohol120% to burn to cd-r. Any suggestions? I wanna play boody roar! :)

I have backups on DVD-R and +R media and always burn slow as possible. I happen to use Nero to burn but it don't matter much I don't believe and as far as the TOC making the difference you need an original game with a larger TOC size than the backup your trying to play. Look here for a reference,
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/182717
and also someone correct me if I'm wrong,
you have to have this formula for playing backups
DVD5 original= DVD5 backup
DVD9 original= DVD9 backup
Blue Ray ??? don't know for sure
and I still haven't had time to check the playability of PSX yet....anyone ???
Hope that helps.

EDIT:
I have made a little progress with looking for the inner source for the 3v motor but I'm still falling short of finding anything. Lets just say I've eliminated a bunch of possibilities and I'm still trying to find something to use until a friend can get back with me on some tests he's doing with resistors to take from the HD 5v source.

PS1 is a mystery.
I can boot PS1 backups but only from the same region as my PS3.
Ie: PS1 backups of japanese NTSC games on my japanese ps3.
Trying to boot PS1 USA backups fail with black screen freeze.
Maybe my original PS1 TOC game isn't big enough.. it's a possibility. please test and report ^_^;
See you,

Sony threatens PlayStation 3 hackers

As much as i want to make this happen like everyone in this forum thread, i would really suggest we do not release too much of these details to the "outside" world. If we get caught =( (thou quite unlikely) or if they upgrade the firmware (most likely) =/ to counter this, all our efforts here will be worthless T_T.
Though there might be other hackers or methods out there right now, i really suggest to minimize our public exposure from now on to avoid further problems and stick to our way of doing things with the ps3. =) Keeping this issue wrapped within ourselves will be good for all of us=).
Regards to the revolution changing people who unselfishly contributes to this thread. Cheers.

I know where this came from and its not about this mod.
The loading of ps3 game disc was done using a leaked ps3 sdk utility.
Although it lets the disc be recognized, ps3 still won't run it.
I think Sony more worried about other information in the sdk that
in the right hands...

So the Motor is always getting 3v of current even when the system is off? won't that lessen the life of it or break it?

That is just the disc loading motor, and its not getting voltage all the time, only when u flip the switch.

after this mod, my ps2 games have distorted sounds (only backups)... only 50% of time. I had to reboot the game to get the soudn working correctly. weird. right now, i am formatting my system to see if that fixes anything.
didnt fix it. no problem with composite sounds but HDMI is weird.
Never mind, i think it is my tv. When I turn off my tv and turn it back on. it sounds fine.
I am using Olevia 232v
QUESTION: Does it work on 1.81v?
and will it scratch the Blueray laser by any chance?
thanks

Yeah it does ;)

Nope as the ejection system highers the disc when it is ejected, the laser is below and doesn't touch it.

anyone figure out what kind of resistor to use if using the 5v wire going to the drive? Dont really want to have to use batteries.

Nice one Vovan90, almost not noticeable from the rear and from the front totally hidden. I'll bet that took some time. Great effort on your part. Are you using batteries or transformer or did you find a source within the PS3?? Does this mod have original functionality or is it all manual now??
I still haven't found a source for the 3v motor yet, but I'm still working on it. I think my friend gave up on figuring the right resistor to do the job. I'm going to go buy a bunch of different resistors and do some trial and error testing myself if I don't find a source soon. I have been pretty busy though, it may take me some time. If anyone else could come up with something man it would be appreciated. :)

Just create a new project in blu ray disc generator, copy all files from your original disc(for example resistance)except USRDIR, copy USRDIR folder from game you want to play (backup), create new iso and burn this new project.
Now insert your original game (resistance) in PS3, swap it with your new burned bd-r, now when ps3 will boot disc, it will think thats it boot resistance, but on the screen you will see another game (i hope :))
Thats the way we should be thinking.
Maybe we should try to boot a ps3 copy by swapping the same original ps3 title.
That way we know for sure if backups will ever run and you can
claim to be the first to run backup ps3 disc.
Unforutnately Blu-ray burners are down to $450, still too much for me to invest.

Can you confirm this? Are you on 1.81 firmware? Acouple of my friends have done the mod, updated to 1.81 and now after the PlayStation 2 white logo they just get a black screen. Could it be something in their settings? They have turned on the upscaler and smoothing option. Anything I else I can suggest to them that may fix it?
Cheers

Supra, tell them to use original disc with bigger TOC.
Devil May Cry is perfect for this.
