That's pretty much what happened, whenever there was a large usage of memory (Halo, DVD rip, or Photoshop). I tested the overall memory (it froze). Then I tested each channel pair (dual channel mobo) and narrowed it down to one pair. Then tested each stick individually, and had one that was definitely bad. Ended up removing the other stick as the computer still froze (but it read normally in the diagnostic).

MS memory diagnostic

Downloaded it last night. My floppy looks like it is disconnected - probably happened when I installed my DVD burner. So I tried to burn the diagnostic(windiag.iso) to a CD. It would not re-boot from any of my cd/dvd drives(I have a cd ; dvd-rom/cd-rw ; DVD-RW drives). Is there something I need to do to create a boot cd other than copying this file to the CD????

Some systems will when you try to boot from a CD-ROM read the hard disk first and ignore the boot disc. You can force your system to read from your CD-rom only by going into your bias setup. Diasble your hard disk from booting, leaving only your CD-rom listed which will make your CD-Rom the only item to boot and it will read your disc.

this causes no harm to your system and it's easily undone, just remember the changes you made.

Yeah...the bios (a/k/a CMOS or setup) will let you choose the boot sequence order between the floppy, HDD's, and CD-ROM. Your No.1 HDD is IDE-0. On most computers I've dealt with you can get to the setup menu by pressing the DEL key when re-booting. "Advanced Options" is usually the name of the category.

Finally got the PC to boot from the cd. Ran WINDIAG last night and it came up clean. I then went in and am running the in-depth scan w/o the cache. It has been running for about 6 hours and is just done with 5 of the 11 tests. Will rport tomorrow on the outcome of the in-depth test.

Sometimes even when the ROM is first in the bootup order the CD ROM may still not be read and the hard disk will continue to load Windows. What I was suggesting is to make the CD ROM the only disk in the bootup order which would force its recognition and the Boot disc would then be read. It won't hurt anything he just has to go back and reset the boot order.

That's a good point...and jogs my memory a bit. About 4 years ago a virus knocked out my boot record. The only way I could get the BIOS to recognize the recovery CD was to disable everything...which defeated the whole purpose of the CD!!! I ended up buying some data recovery sw...which fortunately worked.

Well after running for over 30 hours it finally finished all 11 tests and came up with no errors...On top of that my computer at work got one of the new strains of virus--the type that you get from visiting an infected website...Norton had caught that there was a virus but somehow it passed through anyway. It kept on sending out files with logged info and passwords to a website. We finally were able to locate what it was and got rid of it, but in the meantime between home and work I have not been able to get on a computer, so sorry I did not report back earlier.

Anyway have not had a chance to try decrypter for awhile, but still need to shrink first. Decrypter did work the last time I used it but for some reason my burning software would not recognize it, so I never burned the file. Really never worked on decrypter that much.

Has anyone tried Shrink in safe mode??? We used safe mode to get rid of the virus and most of the programs worked, maybe I will try that at home...couldn't hurt.

Concerning Decrypter, my thoughts were that if it worked, it might narrow down the potential problems you might be having with Shrink.

Decrypter is mostly used as a ripper...and the files are then processed with a program like DVD2One before going to burn. Decrypter is very easy to use. Once installed, and leaving it at its default settings, about all you have to do is slide in your DVD and press the drive icon button. It selects the source and destination folder for you.

If you do have time to run Decrypter, I would ask that you open Task Manager/Performance while decrypt is running and note the CPU and memory usages that appear on the graphs. The values fluxuate, so use your best guess.

Well I tried Shrink in Safe Mode. First it estimating to take 2 hrs 30 minutes to encode. It however froze about halfway through. Unfortunately I did not turn off my screensaver(I didn't realize it loads in safe mode since the other display options don't) so I cannot tell exactly when it froze. I will however try it again. It is scary since it froze with a minimum of drivers installed.

Somehow there must be a conflict or something somewhere.

I will try decrypter, just need to find one of my DVD's that don't need to be compressed so it can go through the whole process.

Tried Decrypter last night with City Slickers copied & burned with no problem.

I then tried same movie with Shrink. It encoded the whole movie but did not automatically copy using Nero as it was set up to do. When I tried to use another burning software it would not recognize files. Need to relook at settings, but at least it went thru the whole encoding process.

Will try again with a dual-layered movie and again with City Slickers(single layered). I did notice that my PC had about 245 mb RAM free, which is strange...usually not even close to that. Something must not be running that usually is.

Dude,

I had the same problem. However, I burned my movies using X Platinum in simple mode. Use VOBRator and Infoedit to remove 321 Screen. Then insert blank and press start. If the movie is in DVD-9 X Plat will compress to fit on DVD-5. To make a backup of that copy use DVD Dycrypter to rip and burn a copy that you can copy again and again.

laters...happy ripping!

theranch...welcome to AD. My understanding here is that pany can backup his DVD's with DeCrypter, he just want's to be able to do it with Shrink.

pany...I think you see the point about trying DeCrypter. If nothing worked, that would be one thing...so...it seems the problem is likely localized to Shrink.

From what I understand, there seems to be different problems. I think you have the right idea about trying different DVD's. See if any pattern emerges.

Also, you mention available RAM. Are you getting this from launching Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)and choosing Performance? What are you getting for CPU usage?

I am using a utility called freeram XP which will reside in the system tray to see what the free ram is. It will also track the CPU usage on the screen. The CPU usage during shrink is usually very high, not sure exactly where, but every 10 seconds or so will spike to 100%.

It's important that the ASPI be working. I think we should get that in order before trying to move on. I have never had any trouble modifying my ASPI...and therefore I don't have any experience with repairing it...and I'm reluctant to give advice in that area.

Possibly someone following this thread can give some advice on repairing your ASPI, or, you might try an AD search for ASPI and get some help from those.
___________
(Added later) Please clarify...did the ASPI actually clean up, and does Nero Tools say that BOTH Nero ASPI and System ASPI are working properly? If not, then this must be fixed.

I would add that a potential area for problems is changing from FAT to NTFS. If things continue to "not cooperate" you might want to consider a clean install.

Doc

Have him open Nero info tool and then check to see if his aspi layer is good, he should see it at the bottom but then have him check configuration and report everything on both the primary and secondary channels, everything.

sorry pany but doc was doing so well I thought I would address him because he's here and I might not be back.

pany...

In re-reading my post I may have sounded like I was giving you the brush off. That was not my intent. I just didn't want to talk out of school. (I embarrassed myself the other day by doing that.) I'm not that familiar with FIXING ASPI problems...but it doesn't mean I can't learn along the way. Let me walk through the Nero Tools with you, and at least see what we have.

If you have trouble installing or opening the tools, let me know. Once you open them, you get a number of tabs. On the ASPI tab there are two pull-down categories on mine...they are Nero ASPI and System ASPI. Each pull-down will show the drivers that are installed...and there will be a GREEN bar at the bottom that tells you "ASPI is installed and working Properly" This is all I've even seen...but I suspect that if something is wrong, you will get a RED bar saying things are not OK.

While you have the tools open, check "Configuration." This tells you what devices/drives are on what IDE channels. ALL of them should show DMA ON. Whatever the case, please tell me what is list under every drive.

Not to confuse things here, but browse the other tabs for a minute. It will give you an idea what is there...and you may find the DISC tab useful once we get past this.

----------------
ADD ON... Pany...this may be retracing some steps you've already been through, but I would like to be thorough here, and confirm where things are right now.

In my last reply I meant that ASPI is working...Shrink still is not...Decrypter is also working.

Even though I still would like to get Shrink working again, I found a fix to get the Platinum X-Copy splash screen to disappear. I am going to try that also. The splash screen sticks on 2 of my DVD players so that is why I switched to Shrink in the first place.

Also does anyone now how to completely uninstall Shrink including the registry??? When I tried to re-install Shrink when I first had problems I never completely un-installed it. Possibly there is a problem in something that was not overwritten during the reinstall.

Shrink has its own uninstaller...but I've found the Control Panel approach a safer route for removing programs.

In answer to your question, I don't know how to remove any remnants of Shrink from the registry. Also, I didn't even see it listed there.

???Was this before or after converting from FAT32 to NTFS???
