I've got the Emerson DVD recorder on layaway at walmart. I got it just for dubbing family tapes of my kids to DVD media thinking this would be a permanent way to preserve them...but after reading this forum I'm not so sure...

Are there any dvd recorders and media that will permanently preserve valuable tapes of your family or are you better off dubbing them back to tape...any advice appreciated.

JandJsdad,

This is an excellent DVD Recorder to use to dub VHS to DVD.

The only problem with it is that right out of the box, it only will use 4x DVD-R media.

I've had one for 6 months. Its worked like a charm.

If you have reservations because of the upgrade issue, you could always wait until the EWR10d5 comes out. This model will accept 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD-RW. I beleive it will retail around 200 bucks.

Nevertheless, the Emerson is great.

I pulled out one of the oldest recorded DVDs (with the Emerson) that I have (about a year old) and plugged it into my Sony player. Plays fine until about 1/4 through when there are problems (freezes, skips). I put it in the Emerson and it plays great. Whats up?

Jesse,

I too have had compatibility problems with other units. My experience is that the Emerson is not always compatibile, especially if you use compression.

Another question before I upgrade. Do the other discs I made with the 4x discs have to be finalized before upgrading to 8x? Thanks.

Angie...

Just a question?

How do you get the discs to play if you do not finalize them?

I would imagine that you would have to finalize them to get them to play back period.

I have owned a emerson recorder since 2/05. I have had to return it twice. This last time I have the newer modle that says that it can read 8x media, well we will see. my advice is stay away from the wal- Mart Emersom to many problems.

The Best DVD Recorder for the price is A Panasonic DMR-ES10. I paid $179 for it at Bestbuy. It will burn +/-R and -RW all 8X along with their stupid Ram Disc. It reads +/-R, +/-RW and of course the stupid ram disc. So far no problems. It is easy to program and one thing I like if you are burning and the power goes off and back on it picks up where it was but you will have an extra track for the rest of the recording. MY Phillips and Cyberhome in some cases the entire DVD is lost and the timer is dumped if it has started. Where I live we have these blips in power all the time. The power company is blaming it on the computers. If you want to copy your old videos just use your old VCR. I have bought my last Emerson, Cyberhome and other junk from Wal-Mart.

Hi,

I usually finalize the discs but there are always some I might have forgot to finalize. And there are some discs that have an hour space on it with the 4 hour speed and wait to finialize it until the space is filled up.

Ahhh..

I hear you Angie!

JNTW, what where the problems that you had with your unit that you had to return it twice?

Maybe I am lucky. I have not had one problem with my unit, and I've burned alot of VHS and TV shows with mine. (close to 150)

I think alot of problems boils down to using bad media seeing how Emerson never suggested what the best media to use is for these units.

Greg

I can't say I am displeased with my machine either. I have had no mechanical problems. Media was my only frustration but the update fixed that.

Has anyone tried TDK since the update? What do you think of TDK?

staples has some sonys on sale this week. I love sonys. All I have to do is upgrade and make sure my other discs are finalized. I been using proncho's DVD-R which is a cheap brand I know but haven't had any problems with it. Greg what tv shows do you have? I have a huge list of tv shows to if you would like to email me
Angie21m@earthlink.net One thing I am looking for is 8 simple rules especially the last season. I mostly have older shows and cartoons.

Angie..

I record alot of shows like CSI, Law and Order..etc.

I record them on RW's.

Never a problem.

Sony's should not be used in this recorder.

Hi Everyone,

I just bought the Emerson DVD player last week. I was so pissed when i bought the wrong disks and couldn't get it to work. The tech support has been very nice and helpful.

ONly DVD-R 4x
and DVD-RW 2x will work.

It is so hard to find these disks, I called today about the firmware update, and they are sending it to me via mail. YIPPY. So I will soon be able to get faster disks.

I've noticed people have been complaining ALOT about this machine and the tech support. I have found no real big problems, I am happy with this machine, my VHS tapes are so worn out (from 1997). Some older than that (like 1989-1990). Needed to redo the tapes to DVD, I noticed now that the tracking on my video tapes is hard to adjust, and the tapes are getting lines across the picture in certain spots.

PLEASE HELP!!!!
I have two questions, what type of disks will I now need to buy? on both -r and -rw after the update.

Please tell me i can still use My 4x r's and 2x rw's, will they still work after the update. I bought a ton cause they are hard to find, if not, i have a lot of burning to do in a week to get rid of them.

After the update you can use 8x media, and your 2x and 4x should still work.

I like mine but seriously doubt whether I would ever buy another one again. Mine worked prefectly for about the first year then problems began. The unit started failing to recognize discs and I ended up tossing a lot otherwise good discs. I found out later that the problem was really caused by an extremely dirty laser lens. I tried a DVD lens cleaner disc but that did little. After that I popped off the case cover yet another DVD cover and cleaned the lens manually with a Q-tip and Windex. Now I need to regularly repeat this about once a month to keep my unit working good. It really is a pain in the u know what. I'd suggest you stay away from the Emerson.

If knowledge is power then why do I so feel powerless

I would like to posit this: Would a PC DVD burner be better? I am considering installing one and then using it to "clean up" what I am burning from TV/tapes/dvds. What do ya think?

Hope you see this aaron. I wish we could click on someone's screen name and their email would be there. I never thought I be posting about tv shows on a completely different board. But I have been looking for growing pains and 8 simple rules for a long time so I am giving it a try. I know how it is doing tv shows coming out on dvd. That is why I am not doing my golden girls videos. And I have just about all of full house on dvd.

Hey angie,

Click on the little head with the arrow at the top corner of the box. It will allow you to send a private message to that person.
