Well, the GTX260 SLI doesn't beat the HD4870X2 by any reasonable margin, so why should the 295?
The GTX295 may have 480 Shader processors, but it's still made of 260s, which will have a lower core, memory and shader clock. Ultimately I think the best we can expect is 3/4 of the way between the GTX260 SLI (original) and GTX280 SLI, which offers a boost of 20% at best in Crysis Warhead over the X2, and slower in STALKER Clear Sky.

Why's it going to be slower clocks? It's 55nm cores, less heat bigger clocks... Plus the gtx280 55nm refresh is about 10% faster than the 65nm and has only 2*6pin pcie connectors. I hope this comes as 10%+ faster than the x2, in gta, it'll be good for prices and if I can sell the x2 in time I may only have to pay a little bit more for it.

I'm going to take a wait and see attitude on this, there is far too much speculation over matters like these, everybody thought the GTX280 was going to be more powerful than it actually turned out to be. Not saying it won't happen, but unlike you, I just don't think this is going to be an HD4870X2 killer. I think it's more likely that the 55nm refresh of the GTX280, if suitably priced, could seriously harm the HD4870 range, especially if it drops the price of the GTX260 216. nVidia brute-forced their way through the benchmarks for that card by putting out significantly overclocked versions - the HD4870s overclock incredibly well too, but are always benchmarked stock. Given that the HD4870X2 has far less overclocking ability, one wonders how the GTX295 will get on.

Quote: everybody thought the GTX280 was going to be more powerful than it actually turned out to be.
Actually it turned out about as powerful as everyone expected. What they didn't expect was ATI's incredibly successful response with the 4XXX series which diminished the GTX280 for shear value.

Hmm, while the GTX280 is still a very nice card, I'm pretty sure it was forecasted to be to the 8800GTX what the 8800 was to the 7900GTX, which wasn't the case. It's maybe 70% better I'd guess, far from the 100% plus difference the 8800 had from its predecessors (excluding the 7950GX2 of course)

I know a few people who've had the Soprano. It's nowhere near as good looking as the pictures, it's tacky, has design flaws, and is generally not a very good case, I'm glad I didn't go with it, I was tempted at one stage. This is a much better alternative:

graham,
I would still consider the merits of an AM2+ MB. By using AM2 you are giving away about 10 to 15 percent in performance! That's like taking out a 5400+ BE and putting in a 5000+! Just consider it.

Russ

yes but 10 to 15% is not that much of a proformce increse at all in my book. think of how much you would pay for a decent am2+ board thease days because it was not long ago that i bought this rig. I paid £63 just for my m2n-sli deluxe and i am very happy with the proformce, that i get from it. i have read an articalthat you have posted on the AMD buliding thread and i think you talked about the 780G or i think it was called that, but you said that you would get a proformce increese just by using the motherboard you were talking about. But what i will do is take it under advisement.i have heard that AMD are bring a new socket anyways so what would be the point of of buying a new motherboard if the are going to change from the am2 platform to am3. i am planing to upgrade to quad core anyways around summer so was just going to get a new case some LED fans and stuff. There is also the money factor that comes in to it as i am buget pc bulider.
sorry if i sound a bit harsh russ.
thanks for the info anyways.

navskin I don't think that Russ understood that you already had the equipment in hand. You're just wanting to showcase what you have in a new case with some new fans and such. :O I'm betting he knows it now. :P
Good luck and enjoy that new showCASE. lol. :D

Yeah, it's certainly against Russ' philosophy to tell someone to get something different after they've already bought their stuff, I know that much :)

Well said Sammy. ;)
spamual... I'll not quote you as that's a bit scary, but you're welcome. :P
Ok... I'm working on some ODD's from a friend and they are not operating correctly. My computer is not "seeing" them for some reason and that's bothersome but the original problem, trays NOT opening, is still there. They are IDE ODD's, one BENQ and one Litey. Has anyone had similar problems and if so any ideas on the cure. ;) tia..
I've already removed the top and cleaned the "slides" and whatever else was there, removed and replaced the trays.. that's where I stand at this point.

Yeah well, don't break this one eh :)
Gm, that is the reason why I stopped using Benq, this happened to both of my drives from them, but within about 3 weeks, for both drives.

I have both a Litey and Benq in one of my systems, and the Benq sporadically will not open, so I have to use the paper clip to get it to open, and then it works normally thereafter. However, both are always seen by the system.
So not much help here.
Do they light up at boot time, if not, then it could be a controller problem, or the drives have malfunctioned.

Thanks sytyguy. I'll give that a look when I get home. At work now and just cruising thru. ;)
@Sammy,
They're not mine and I wouldn't mind having either one of them if they worked properly. lol. I'm trying to help a friend and it seems that I'm no help at all. lol. I'll try a few more tricks then it's in the trash bin with them I'm afraid. :(

The RC690 is a decent enough case, you just have to buy extra fans for it to get its cooling up to scratch with other cases of its type. the Green nvidia branding however is usually very tacky on coolermaster cases, I'd stick with the plain one if I were you.

Sammy just because you don't like the green case doesn't mean that someone else won't either. :P
navskin look into some 140mm fans for the RC-690, you won't regret it. ;) I have 3 installed in mine right now and they are quiet and MOVE some air as well. ;) something like this

Oh green, is fine, I just don't like how it's implemented, swapping in green LED fans, using green lazer LEDs or Ultraviolet with green pigment are better ways of doing it.

graham,
As greensman pointed out, I didn't realize that you have all the parts already to put in a new case. I thought it was a new build! Sorry! BTW, there is no new socket planned per-se. Am3, Am2+ and AM2 are all backwards compatible. All are the 940 Pin socket, despite the name change, and all are pin for pin compatible with any Brisbane. All the triples and Quads, including the Phenom II are 940 pin, regardless of the socket name. All Socket AM3 is, is an AM2+ that supports DDR3 instead of DDR2. With the x2 4400+, I was able to almost match the performance of my x2 4800+ at stock speed using a 780G chipset MB.
sammorris,

Thanks Sam. I think I've only done that once, and that was when someone bought a known fire hazzard when they bought an Ultra PSU that was on the "Bad PSU" list! As I remember, you and I both warned him about it and he returned it for a different brand. Someone even included a video showing one bursting into flames!

Careful on that one though, Socket 940 and Socket AM2 are different though. I don't think S940 stuff is around much any more, but it used to be, and people ended up getting server grade CPUs thinking they'd fit in AM2 boards because shops actually called it "Socket 940" not AM2.

As you know, ALL rules go out the window to make sure someone doesn't buy a dodgy PSU, whether it was a gift, a deal, a steal, who knows? who cares?

That would be the notorious 940 pin Socket "F" for servers in the Socket 939 era. I don't think it was ever called Socket 940, but a lot of "shops", as you say, called it that! I too, know a number of people who bought Opterons for AM2, thinking they would work. Surprise, it don't! LOL!! Toledo Architecture vs Brisbane. Everything from the Brisbane on up will work in AM2, AM2+ and AM3 motherboards.

Russ
