SSDs are a new use for an existing but emerging technolgy, and it will have to age a bit before it has truly arrived. But think about it? Which drive uses a technology that is most likely to fail when both have peaked? Moving parts with electric motors and moving heads, or stationary parts?

I'm intrigued by the idea of putting the OS on a flash drive.
Sam, if you do that for, let's say XP, how much write activity would you actually have? I know that XP is always making backup copies of things, and of course the registry gets added to all the time, but I would imagine that the basic core dlls remain the same, read-only. Apart from the supposed limitation on writes, SSDs can be READ an infinite amount of times, isn't that correct?
Assuming then that the lifetime would be huge, maybe 5 to 10 years given the Wear Levelling that TheftAuto mentioned, how much faster do you think it would make your system? Would you expect a direct benefit in games - increased FPS?

Most games don't run off the hard disk directly, the only one I know that does is Crysis, because it would break the 32-bit RAM barrier otherwise. SSDs are mainly for faster application loading and transfer speed.

I second navskin. Happy holidays to all. Nice Christmas tree, Russ! (Some of Russ' organ music playing in the background would be pretty perfect for a holiday get-together me thinks. lol)

so what is everyones high and low of 2008?
personally the high of 08 was the release of the R7X0 series of Radeon GPU by ATI.
the low was the poor Phenom CPUs by AMD, and the power usage of graphics cards.

Wow, interesting idea.
Highs, 3008WFP, moving to the R700 series, finally getting a nice quiet Corsair PSU, finally getting a 24/7 working fileserver after ridding myself of all those cheap unreliable Asus boards, and finally becoming good at Rock Band.
Lows achieving absolutely nothing in the academic year 07/08, not getting a proper summer holiday, spending too much money as usual and witnessing the decline in true PC games.

Wow, what a fabulous read - 24 pages loosely translated from the colorful greek - "staring in the face of the prince" - and ending up with:
"At last we can say that AMD is back in the game. And as if this were not enough, now we are waiting for the AM3 parent, the new CPU with Integrated DDR3 Memory Controller! Will Intel be raped just to Core i5 ..."
Hahahaha.
All to the glorious strains of Russ' gifted melodies in the background - I'm so glad that I put that on.
What really caught my mad gamer eye at the very end:
At higher resolutions of Crysis and Far Cry 2 - AMD kicked ass! - Straight out winner without taking BETTER PRICE POINT into consideration!!!!

krj,
Interesting review! Not the most polished because of the translation, but very thorough and meticulous. I didn't expect the Phenom II 940 to perform this well. I expected it to be a lot better than Phenom, but not quite at this level. We'll have to see just what all the other test sites have to say about all of this once they get their hands on one and run comparisons of their own. I believe what I see, but I want to see more! LOL!!
Happy Holidays,
Russ

Interesting review, confirms my suspicions really - in normal apps the II 940 is a bit behind the Q9450, in the multimedia benches AMD fared better in, they do better than the Core 2 Quads but get obliterated by the i7s as they pick up the same advantage.
