I had exactly the same problem. I almost went bonkers trying to sort it, reformatting the SD card, trying different versions of the firmware, etc.
In the end, the solution? Couldn't be simpler:
Set the correct time and date (the date is the key here I believe) on the device before you fire up the R4 card. Will work a treat.
Mine was set to a date in 2011 for some reason and this is what upset the software leading to the freeze in the game menu.
Cheers

I've downloaded and extracted the .rar kernal and copied the files onto the micro card including a couple of games but when i turn on the DS it stays on the black "loading" screen which is very frustrating!
I have watched load of videos on you tube to try and solve things and can't understand whats goin wrong, ive tried about 6 different kernals - 1.54, 1.22, 1.18, 1.21, 1.24
Anyone any ideas??
If you truly bought an R4 SDHC Revolution for DS, then you'll want to go to the website on the packaging (www.r4sdhc.com) and download version 2.0 available as of June 2009). It's a little confusing because it says it's for the R4i SDHC, but it does work on my R4 SDHC card with an 8gb Kingston card in it, and definitely seems to be more robust. It also solved some problems I was having with quite a few ROMs.
One problem I still continue to have from time to time is data corruption. It appears to happen when I copy the ROMs over to the card via my PC. It seems to be a file allocation table issue, but the strange part is that I can see and access these files on my XP desktop PC, XP notebook, and even my Nokia Internet Tablet (Linux), but when I put the card in my R4 SDHC and try to run the newly added games it locks up. So far, the solution has been to copy everything off the card back to my PC, delete everything off the card and/or format it (using Panasonic format utility), and then copy everything right back on to the card. Strangely, this works fine, even if I don't reformat it. Given that it seems to be a problem only with navigating to folders on the R4 SDHC and not any of my other devices, I'm pretty sure it's not a card reader issue (I've also tried 3 different card readers to write the file). Seems to be a glitch in the R4 SDHC firmware, but as long as the the 2-minute copy/reformat/copy workaround is working, I'm still happy. Also, this isn't EVERY time I add a new game....just sometimes. Weird!
FYI, I've also read on several other sites (I know -- but there really are other sites than Afterdawn! Who knew???!!!) that the SDHC compatibility with the R4 SDHC is a bit shaky if you use a card bigger than 4GB. The problem might be connected to file limit per folder, but also seems to be an issue with the second 4GB of the 8GB card not being properly recognized. So far, I haven't encountered that problem, but I'm using the card for 50/50 games/videos, and the games were copied to the card first and the videos after that. So far, Moonshell doesn't seem to have a problem seeing the entire 8GB, so it sees the video files no problem. It will be interesting to see what happens if I had more games now that the data is at the 6GB mark.
Anyway, hope the first paragraph helps you, and the rest is something to watch out for after you get the 8GB card working.

This guy is a complete genius. Completely fixed the stuck on game menu problem on the ds lite that i was working on. Date was set to 2044, and when i changed it the cart started working properly.

Hey all, new to this site, but been readin your posts.
I have a bit of trouble here too, but slightly different. Just hoping someone can maybe help me out...
I have a DS Lite with a real R4. Thats been fantastic, so thought we would buy a second console (which is still in transit from Ebay), so thought I would buy another R4 card to go in it.
Bought the R4 card (which, after much reasearch on the net tonight, I have discovered is NOT a real one). Once that arrives, I thought I would test it in the DS Lite I already have here.
Take Real card out, insert new Fake card in, turn it on and it all works fine. Happy days for me......but then after taking it out and putting the real one back in, then taking that out and putting the fake one in for the second time, it comes up with "Touch the touch screen to continue".... WTF????
Anyone know how I can fix that?

Kitty - sorry to sound dumb....but do I put the paper between the R4 card and the DS, or between the Micro SD card and the R4?

I just tried the "Paper trick" but to no avail... Tried all sorts of paper, and both ways - still says I need to touch the touch screen to continue. Bah!

Hi,
Can anybody tell me if this is a firmware issue or something I'm missing?
I have a R4 cartridge which works fine with a sandisk 2gb micro sd card but will not go past the loading screen when used with a 4gb sandisk sdhc card.
I've re-formatted the card with the panasonic formatter and tried what I think is every firmware. Do I need to re-format before trying each firmware? and can someone advise the correct firmware? (or anything else I'm missing).
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Can anyone help? Just bought an R4 card while on holiday in turkey. The web address on the box is www.r4ultra.com, but the english kernel there is not working for me. No matter which kernal I download, (I have tried about 6 inc AKAIO, AK2, etc as well as R4 ones I am getting the loading screen flash up for a fraction of a second and then the red 'sd card' image with Menu? underneath.
The card itself does not have a sticker on it, nor any screws. On the rear there is a small imprinted image engraved showing the way to install the Micro SD. The micro sd slides in and then sort of seats and tightens when pushed fully home. It does not click.
There are no other marks on the card and no CD came with it.
Any suggestions?

jskmcc - the date will fix your problem !!!
What to do:
1. switch off the DS
2. take out the R4 SDHC card out of your DS
3. switch on the DS and
4. press the start button - you should see a clock and calender
4. use the scroll arrows and click on the settings icon at the bottom of the screen and Press A
5. click on the clock and calender icon and adjust to todays date
6. save and then quit/shutdown
7. place the R4 disc back
All should now work - good luck

Hi foxview if your getting a message like "can't find save file" when you try and load them then you need to search the web for a program called DSLAZY.

Sorry foxview I put up the wrong error message in previous post.
If your getting the message "The save data could not be accessed. Please turn the power off and reinsert the DS Card."
Then the DSLAZY program will sort you out.

To the best of my knowledge the original R4 (has 'R4 Revolution for DS' on the front of it) has a max card size of 2Gb.
