Well with two 4870s, assuming there's decent crossfire scaling, you'll be looking at a little under 30fps minimum and around 40fps average, say 28/39 with 8xAA enabled, so maybe 31/43 with 4xAA. Not terrible by game standards, but you'll want it far smoother than that considering it's a multiplayer FPS. Two 5850s under the same assumption should be much better, around 50-55/70-75 with 4xAA. All well and good, but that's still slightly less than fluid with two expensive cards, and only 1920x1200. Considering a single HD5870 can handle Modern warfare 2 fluidly (60fps minimum or higher) at 2560x1600, doing the same for BBC2 is going to be far more difficult. Even if crossfire scaling is as good as the best of games out there (and it rarely is with the most demanding titles, STALKER Clear Sky excluding) getting even 50fps minimum at 2560x1600 with only 4xAA compared to the benchmark's 8x is going to take at least three HD5850s, if not higher. Getting 60fps is going to be a quad crossfire affair, likely involving either 5870s or overclocked 5970s. Granted, with no official bench numbers it's difficult to call, but mathematical extrapolation places the HD5850 and HD5870 in the 30" performance duldrums of only around 16/20 and 19/23 respectively.
Red Maw: At all? What card do you have?
Also remember, this is all a maximum detail affair. If there is one setting that will dramatically reduce demand, it has not been considered.

8800GTS 640MB; Sorry my post was really bad lol. Dropping the settings down to medium should get me playable frame rates if my E6600 doesn't hold me back, although I would rather wait till I can play it at max settings since that's quite possible on current hardware (which is what I meant in my previous post >_>). Ever since I built my current system 2.5 years ago there hasn't been a single game I've wanted to play that it hasn't been able to play at max (except crysis) so it's become a habit. Since I'm planning on doing a new build shortly after nvidia releases their next line of gpu's it *hopefully* won't be too long from now.

Considering this is high detail, I'd imagine cutting detail back a little would give you solid frame rates at 1024x768, probably 1280x1024 as well.
Beyond that, it might start to get a little choppy in places.
I wouldn't consider it unplayable though. If you've kept an original GTS for this long, ME2 probably won't make you cringe.
As for waiting for the nvidia release, I'm curious - are you waiting in hope of a price drop for the HD5800 series, or are you dead set on buying something nvidia, no matter who good it is for what it costs?
Don't get too excited about the GF100 architecture, I'll warn you. It won't be terrible, but I have my doubts it's going to be groundbreaking.

well tbh the 5 sereis were ground breaking either, they are still piggybacking on the 2900 series implememntations.

Well, groundbreaking as far as technology goes no, but for performance they were a remarkable step. The last time performance leapt that much other than from HD3800 to HD4800 (which was more a catchup than an amazing leap forward) was when the 8800GTX came out 3 years before it.
All I'm saying is don't expect the GF100 to demolish the current HD5800 crop, or beat them for a reasonable price.

looks like i need a quad. this game is very CPU based. lots of people on forums are noticing a huge difference jumping to quad cores. and also the recomended settings say and quad core and GTX260, so i am equaling one and under the other.
hey sam when you jump to i5, send that Q9550 this way :D which tbh will save me alot, as i was planning on upgrading to i3/i5 my self, but this was i can put that money saved to a GPU. possibly a 5850

Hmm, an interesting thought. I will have to try it when the game is released and see my CPU usage. I notice a fair few games pulling quite a lot off my Q9550.
If you seriously want the Q9550 then I will consider selling it. However, it leaves behind the rest of the high-end gear used to run it, which I would have no use for if I sold the CPU, so would have to try and sell. On the plus side, doing so would make my DX11 upgrade more affordable, but on the downside, gone would be my experimental PhysX system... :S

If that's true then it's probably looking at around 70-80% on a high clocked Q9550 or Phenom II.

Surprisingly, at my modest resolution of 1680x1050 the only game my GTS hasn't been able to max out was OF:DR, and even then it worked at max settings just fine until I reinstalled it. Using, much less gaming on, 1280x1024 is almost enough to make me cringe these days, low resolutions like that just do not look good on my 20" monitor.
The only reason I'm waiting for nvidia is because I want to get the best card for less money. If GF100 is A) better and reasonably priced, I get a better gpu for roughly the same money or B) equal to or worse then a HD58xx there should be a price drop which is always welcome. I have no alliances/fanboyism for any company, I'll buy from whoever offers the best product without bankrupting me lol.

Dragon Rising was a pain, as it wreaked all sorts of havoc with multi-GPU setups, which I rely on to get good performance at 2560x1600 in games.
It's my suspicion that the GF100 card will be quite powerful, moreso than the HD5870, but nowhere near the HD5970, and will cost a fortune, somewhere between the HD5870 and HD5970, probably closer to the HD5970.
This may or may not induce price cuts of the HD5800 series, depending on how competitive ATI feel the GF100 is. On top of that, there is also an HD5890 in the works should GF100 kick some ass.

I would agree, the 5970 is a beast of card to beat and even if something did it would be well out of "reasonably" priced. If GF100 does beat the 5870 and a 5890 is released I would suspect the price of the 5870 to drop (at least a little) and at the current price of 400+ (with out tax/shipping) I would be glad to see that.

Yeah, that's highly likely. Depends on the timescale of course. If the GF100 came out tomorrow (it won't) the HD5870 price would have to be cut. If it came out in say late March/early April as we're expecting, the HD5890 may be ready to be kicked out the door onto shelves, which may negate the need for a 5870 price cut, especially if the GF100 is going to be as expensive as I expect.

Indeed, nowhere near it, in much the same way as the HD4870 vs HD4870X2 vs GTX280.

looks like the fermi names may have been leaked.
GTX480 and GTX470.
jump over 3000 series but i assume caus they renamed the G210 to G310 and dont want to assossiate new cards withthe 300 series

A wise move given they ruined the 300 series' reputation by migrating the poorest cards to it. 8 series vs 9 series all over again. If that's one business practice nvidia are still sticking to, overpricing their new products is likely to be continued as well. Don't expect to see the GTX480 any less than £375+VAT. I wouldn't be surprised if the GTX470 is at least £300-£320+VAT as well.
Are they aiming for a simultaneous release?

I disagree. They cost more than they normally should, but given the direness of the competition, they cost an appropriate amount.

We should. Without ATI, AMD would probably be sliding further towards bankruptcy. Not so long ago, I would have said ATI made the situation worse, but right now, the graphics side of AMD is a lot stronger than their beginnings.

Perhaps. How is their coding as of late? Last time I checked, it was scary to say the least. Please don't misinterpret. Believe me, my next GPU IS an ATI! As I'm sure you know, my future board, only supports Ati crossfire :D

Gtaphics drivers all have bugs to some extent. I wouldn't say ATI's drivers have been worse than nvidia's other than in Linux for several years, nor would I say they're that great.
