IMO the new X2 550 BE > intel dual cores.
just for the fact that it can be unlocked to a quad core!
(well the OCablility aswell :D)

Is there a Maximus formula for AMD?
I have a catalogue that says there is an AMD Maximus II Formula

No, that's the Crosshair II Formula
Shaff: Why make one of the things that weakens a CPU its selling point? The AMDs are the better products stock, but overclocked the Intel wins. They're great CPUs for the majority of people who don't overclock, but when you do consider enthusiast users, their appeal is weaker. The core unlock is largely irrelevant since so few boards can do it.

Last annoying newbism; Will the crosshair work in my setup?

Well, yes, but it's a ludicrously over-complex board for your uses. You would be better off with something a lot cheaper.

Well there were supposed to be some AM3 only models, some AM2+ only models, and some revised AM3 models that also have a DDR2 memory controller for use with AM2+ boards. I'm not sure which is which. I think if the X3s can do AM2+, the X2s should also be able to.

theres a crosshair iii coming out.
and sam, because they are strong dual cores which can be turned into quad cores, what not to like?
the enthusiast will want to do that, and over clock them.

The fact that nobody outside extremesystems will actually turn them into quad cores.
That you can get a very fast dual core CPU that performs exceptionally well in games for £65 is excellent, but when you consider overclocking, an E5300 is a much better looking option simply for the ridiculous speeds those CPUs can achieve.
Power usage of the new CPUs is still pretty chunky though.

X2250: 60W idle, 84W HD video, 122W load

It doesn't seem to have sunk in that you can only use very specific boards to unlock the cores on these chips. If it could be done on any board, it would be much more appealing.

Sam,
As far as I know, only the Phenom II socket AM3 is AM3 only. It doesn't have the DDR2 memory controller. The new one due out soon will be AM2+/AM3. I guess they wanted to have something to put in the AM3 motherboards that are popping up all over!

A scabby cheap ASRock? Hmm....
Russ: Hmm, then that puts a big hole in the new AMD CPU lineup.

Sam,
Not really. You can still get a 940 Phenom II for AM2+, as well as a few others. At the moment it's difficult to find out which ones are compatible with bith AM2+ and AM3. I was looking at that 550 Phenom II that shaff mentioned, and while it says AM3 on newegg, checking the motherboard list at AMD for it shows a number of AM2+ motherboards, other than the 790FX, so I have to assume that it will work with either AM2+ or AM3!

True, but the 905e is a more attractive proposition with its decent energy usage.

I'm assuming you glossed over the other caveat they posted after that :P
I do think the 550 is a better CPU than most Intels, certainly for the price, and have for a while, but this is not, nor will it ever be the reason why.

Yes the dual core Phenom IIs are turning out fantastic. You should not depend on unlocking them, but stock they are very good CPUs for the price. All AMDs, Athlons/Phenoms/Phenom IIs have always performed quite decently in games compared to Intel so it's no surprise to see the X2 550 doing well. If my 7750 BE can push a 9800GTX+ this well in games, I see no reason why the 550 can't do the same job but faster with lower power use. I'm certainly interested in one for my 780G board. Thus my wondering if they are AM2+ compatible.

Very nice choice Rob. I would have probably suggested the same. In fact, I just did suggest it to somebody at work :O I have NO complaints with my Optiarcs. Except that they're not quite that good at Ripping/reading. But that's not why I bought them. They're EXCELLENT burners. THAT'S why I bought them :) My LH-20A1H has proven itself the best reader. Though the DRU820(Sony), has read some VERY nasty looking discs. Though I think it has a Panasonic chipset. I don't burn with it anymore though. It doesn't like burning any quicker than 4X, and even at that speed, it's beginning to show Degradation toward the end of the disc.
For Trekkie Fans
I strongly recommend checking out this guys videos. It had me laughing SOOOOOOO hard my stomach and cheeks hurt. This guy is a friggin genius! I like all of the videos, but "TNG edit 24" is probably my favorite.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!
