You will need a dvd burner and blank dvds for dvd based games.Otherwise cd based games only require a cd and cd burner :)
DVD burners are quite cheap these days :)

I'm sure this technique is used by others, and is probably already posted here somewhere. In any event, here's how I burn my games.
Here's how I burn my games using a "borrowed game" or "rented retail game."
For playing my burned games, I use a newly installed lid for my PS2, and I use...
1. Swapmagic 3.6, which comes with 2 boot discs. One is a DVD loader and the other is a CDR loader.
You don't always have to burn a game to a Blank dvd if it will fit on a blank CDR.
2. Depending on which CD type your burned the game to, determines which boot loader disk you insert into the PS2.
3. Once the load states "load program", I simply remove it and insert my burned game.
You can find the new lid and Swap Magic disc set combo here:
http://www.thegiantstore.com/index....PROD&ProdID=338
Burning a copy from an original (say rented copy).
There are 3 tools I recommend that you use. All of them are needed to be able to follow through my how-to session.
Dvd Decrypter: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...
Isobuster:
http://www.isobusterdownload.org/isobuster_all_lang.zip
Cdvdgen:
http://www.btinternet.com/~ps2rippininfo/tools/cddvdgen.exe
You can simply use DVD Decryptor to create an image of a retail game, then burn the image back to a blank DVD or CDR (depending upon the size of the image). Then you have a playable game.
If your game stutters during playback (sound skips, frequent freezing of images), then you need to use ISObuster on your image. The reason is because the "system file" is too close to the outter edge of the burned game disc.
1. Open ISObuster.
2. Move it to the side, and drag your image file that DVD Decryptor created, to the right box of ISObuster.
3. You now see the file names and folders for the game. Write these down in the order you see them.
4. Now, create a new folder on your desktop called "iso-rebuild-temp".
5. Drag, file by file, each part you see listed in ISObuster to the new folder.
NOTE: This process rids the original iso file from excess, dud space, which will inturn
reduce the image file size dramatically without loss of game play quality.
NOTE: if the drag and drop doesn't work for you, you can right click each part, select "extract"
and click on your new folder.
6. Once you have dragged (extracted) each part over, close ISO buster.
7. Now, you need to open the program cd/dvd-rom generator.
8. When opening it, tell it "new project", then "create dvd."
9. Drag, in order you wrote them down, the files from the extracted folder to the generator.
10. When done, click the Volume button.
10A. For the disc name, put in the numbers shown next to the system file for the game.
10B. For the Producer, put in Playstation.
10C. Click the Record button at the top right.
11. You will get two errors with this program, this is correct.
12. Next, File/Export IML and select a newly created folder (you might name it IML-files).
13. Once this is done, open up GDVD IML2ISO. This program will rebuild your iml files, by you
telling it to open the first IML file that was created.
14. The final result will be a much smaller image file of the game, thus, this will bring the
system file for the game closer to the inner ring of the disc.
15. Use DVD Decryptor or your favorite iso burner software to burn the iso to a blank disk.
16. Enjoy your game.

you have lost me on this one
skipping/freezing is a common cause of using bad media, and is more likely to be caused by this,or a bad laser,or a fast burn speed
i have never heard of the "system file" causing problems when booting games?,...maybe your right,however,...
you should only rebuild games when the TOC is over the swapmagic limit
or at least thats the theory anyways
btw, when you rebuild with cd/dvd gen,its vital you put then in the same order as they appear....only in Nero can you change the order and get away with it
good luck anyways
:)

If you create an image solely with DVD Decryptor, then burn it, odds are in favor the system file will be too close to the outter edge of the disc. From all my research, including my inside cotacts with Sony, the sytem file actually resides directly inside the inner ring of retail PS2 games.
Try burning the newest Terminator game with just DVD Decryptor. It will not work. You'll have to use ISOBuster to clean up the iso, rebuild it, then reburn it.
My technique has yet to fail, and I have a hefty collection of PS2 and Xbox games that are burned on CD.
My method is just for those that don't want to end up with coasters.

Other games such as Juiced, NFSU2, NBA 2006, etc, have skips or stutters when just using a DVD Decryptor image file burned back to a blank DVD.
Since I don't do that, and I use the method I listed above, my laser is not bad, damaged, or having in alignment issues, since the new results are flawlessly smooth. The difference can be seen, also, by viewing the final image file size, which is always lesser than the original one created with DVD Decryptor.
Oh yeah, step 9 states to add the files in order as they appeared in the original image, a step I already covered.

yes but you are sort of contradicting yourself...how can you change the order by moving the system file around, but yet place them in the same order as they appear in isobuster at the same time?
the reason its close to the outer edge,is because the TOC is close to 4.3GB.
thats why swapmagic has problems booting such games
games below 4 gb are no-where near the edge,as it burns in- to outwards,
(not trying to insult your intelligeince, just stating the obviuos)
thats why its only nessecary to rebuild games with high TOC'S
are all these games high TOC'S,and are reduced in size after rebuilding?,i guess thats why they run smoother,...because the outer edge of the disk is not touched after burning
i doubt it has anything to do with placing the system file first.
try extracting an image, but this time put the system file in its normal place,i bet its the same
but if it works for you, then all is good

Try another blank dvd and see what happens. If you still don't get any luck, leave the blank dvd in the drive, and perform a reboot. Upon rebooting, open up My Computer to ensure it sees that a dvd disc is in the drive (the icon will reflect it). Then try your burn again with DVD Decryptor. Make sure that DVD Decryptor is set to Mode/ISO/Write, or just press W.

At Wal-Mart, you can find the namebrand, Lite-On. It burns both single and dual layered blank dvds, as well as, +R and -R DVDs. I spent right at $60 for it. In fact, I bought one for my machine and my wife's.
So far, I've probably burned well over 1000 movies, and around 40 PS2 games. Both burners are still kicking butt.

Quote: Now when i try to write it using DVD Decrypter it says that the device is not ready because there is no medium.
make sure the firmware is up to date
using crappy disks, like you are is not always the best thing to do
the burner may not be recognising them,so make sure its the latest
use DVD Decrypter to check for this
TOOLS>DRIVE>CHECK FOR FIRMWARE CAPABILTIES
only use DVD+R if you ps2 is a v4 or above,
its best to use DVD-R in general,
but san andreas seems to play better on a DVD+R,due to the fact that this game constantly reads off the disk, and for some reason DVD+R boots them better

Just go to Wal-Mart, and purchase the Lite-On 16X Dual/Single Layer burner that is also compatible with both +r and -r DVDs. That's is the name-brand the two Wal-Marts in my area carry. The drive is cheap, and I haven't had any issues with it. I also download and installed a new firmware version, and the drive is still performing great.
