Quite simple, make the actual die 40% larger!
Though to be fair, it's only using 22% more power (supposedly). Still a fair bit though.

Makes sense - 40% larger chip, means 20% larger per side - meaning the current graphics coolers will probably not work on it.

Still for 40% more power, and only 22% more energy usage, that's a more efficient chip. That tells me that we should see some really nice energy efficiencies when they drop to the 28nm die size middle of 2012 (just before Musharoff starts campaigning to resurrect his political career in Shaff's home country.)

Hey Kevin, how big is your 264 BD rip of Iron Man 2 going to be? The reason I ask is that I would be interested in getting an ftp copy of it when you're done, if possible, depending on your bandwidth. Coincidentally, I got hold of a 10-12 gig 264 1080p rip of that exact same file, which, at that rip size, should have had excellent quality, virtually identical to the BD.

But I couldn't get it to open on the vista phenom with ati 3650, either with divx plus, or 64 bit mpc hc, or any of the other players that I have.

We decided it had to be just a corrupt file. If you have good overnight upload bandwidth, I would love to have you throw your successful file on my ftp site to see if I can get it to play on the phenom, or on the new Q9450 with 8800GTX.

70% drop per side, so the same sort of efficiency drop as the HD4870-> HD5850.
That gained a 55% performance boost per watt (as a 5850 uses the same power as a 4870), so it's conceivable that with the 28nm series, there'll be something as powerful as an HD6870 that only uses 145W, or a little bit less than what a 4870/5850 currently uses, theoretically meaning something with exactly double the raw power of the HD5870 would only use 200W, and easily be manufacturable as a single card.

Confirmed it was a buggy X264 file. Played Independence Day, and Iron Man 2 on his HTPC last night. Not even a small hiccup :D Gotta love ripbot264. Though Independence day was rebuilt via Bdrebuilder ;)
Guess my Overclock is rock solid :p

To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

Been a long time since we've seen the names at the beginning of the last list.
Thankfully nothing too horrible in this lot, two 6870s get the full pass for the trio at 2560x1600, assuming they perform as expected.

any one play the MOH beta. I thougt it was fantastic. Small maps aside, felt like a BC2 version of COD4 promod. Very quick paced and fun, andpre ordered the limited edition for £27. Not bad.

1920x1200 everythin turned off at dx9 i was hitting around 10 FPS. Maxed out DX10 but no aa was in the low 30s. Gonna experiment for the best mix.

MOH is meant to be largely the same engine as BFBC2 right? IMO that means it should run about the same and look about the same, which is a good thing, though I wouldn't like to see it get any more demanding, as it tops out quite high with AA and HBAO enabled, at least for DX10. Can't say for DX11 (yet), and not going to for a while, having ordered 8 WD20EARSes for my server this weekend.

Medal of Honor's single player will be Unreal 3 based and the multiplayer will be Frostbite 2 based like BC2. Only issue I can see is that beta testers are reporting it to be like CoD4 XD Not a fan of twitch shooters.

its definitely fast past. i played the beta, and couldn't adjust to the tiny maps they've given you. the other fact that if you can get to a high point you can snipe with an assault rifle. Ive always had a beef with people making the AK-47 in games to be very accurate, when in fact they spread like a wet whore in auto. single fire isn't so bad.

Could be worse. In Bad Company 2 the AN-94 assault rifle is more accurate at ultra-long range than most of the snipers.

its also overpowered considering its supposed to be one of the AK-100 variants firing the smaller 5.45 ammunition, the gun of choice for nubs I'm sure.

Actually the AN-94 IS 7.62mm in Bad Company 2. Same as the G3. And yes it's very accurate and powerful but I don't think overpowered per se. The only change I think it could use is lowering the firing rate a little and upping the recoil. Weapons like the M4 or the M16 are supposed to be more accurate, but the M4 is actually weaker per round than the M16 and less accurate than the AN-94(in game terms of course). While it should do the same damage as the M16 and be more accurate than the AN.

Just a heads-up, got me an HK416 today cheap :D It's an M4 completely customized in a joint venture between H&K and the US Navy SEALS. The one I got is chambered for .22LR but that can be fixed as easily as changing the upper receiver, which takes all of 30 seconds... Again, fully registered weapon guys, all of my guns are legit.

You know that never really occurred to me, but I guess I do use the Gol for a reason lol. It's a good thing I hardly ever come across anyone who uses the AN-94, most prefer the M16A2 (and I still like my UMP-45 despite it not being as good as the AKS-47u).

Jeff, Nice going with the HK416 :) I'd love to increase my collection but I don't have the money or time to use the one's I already have :\

LOL! I didn't think anything but ;) I always give the benefit of the doubt. It comes naturally to me. Call it gullible, call it trusting, or whatever :p

Kind of funny, One of my relatives has a large collection of guns in his safe. Never realy been into shooting much. I sure get a kick out of it gaming though. Damn near begs me to go shoot too. I guess we all have our preferences ;)

most of my guns i have now are handme downs, some are from my Grandfathers chest. one weapon in particular always interested me not the gun that's particular interesting but how my grandfather was able to keep it. considering its a .30 caliber machine gun and it looks like the M1919 with Some kind of modification like it was supposed to be used like a rifle it looks like there was a rifle stock riveted to the receiver and a steel ring on the barrel for a forward grip. that's my guess, thing is i cant see my grandfather running around with a machine gun mowing down japs. not to mention his designation was rifleman.

I'm not a major gun nut myself but a few of my friends were into the culture and I learned fast. I believe there are some pics of me and my buddy Kyle at the shooting range earlier in this thread. He is the one who showed me how to service my own AK and he let me learn ARs using one of his AR-15s. From there it sort of mushroomed into a hobby. He is also the one who hooked me up with the HK416 cheap from a wholesaler using his preferred account.

Honestly I don't do much more than go to the firing range a few times a month and hunt deer. Specifically the reason I wanted the HK416, I plan to use my hunting scope on it in conjunction with some of my friend's 5 round magazines. Picatinny railmount for the win :D

Ho ho! Haven't played any games in a while. My buddy just asked for some cheats recently. So I thought I'd play this one. The trailer made it look interesting. Hope so :)

I have no idea what that game is, Kevin, and since it doesn't look like a shooter, I guess I never will, lol.

By the way, fresh back from a trip to LA, I hear there's a new mp shooter coming down the pike from the V guys - 5 against 5 - but maybe a year away - sort of a top-down like the game they just gave away, whose name I forget, but the full V quality we have grown to know and love.

That has me licking my lips for 2012 2560x1600 glory! I bet Jeff buys a 30" by then, unless some other hot (legit) gun makes it to his wholesaler.

But with a TDP cap of 300 watts per card, probably not two of those chips on a single card, at full clocks. But still, an overclocked version back up to regular clocks, with heat pipe cooler, at 400 watts, is probably what we're looking at right now with a 900 mhz 4 gig 5970, I imagine.

any one play the MOH beta.

You pre-ordered it! You must have liked it, that's for sure! I've been closely looking at the advertising - is it multiplayer only, or does it also come with a single player campaign - either way of course I'll be getting it.

Jeff, what's a "twitch shooter?" Do you mean enemies around every corner? I kind of liked COD4 mp, and I was planning to get back up to my 5 star general ranking (I stupidly didn't back-up my ranking file, and now I'm down to corporal) unless I get carried away with something else.

Hahaha. Good point. Well, Jeff should be able to provide some relevant comment, since he's the proud owner of an AK, with no less than a 100 round drum clip.

Jeff - I have to agree with DXR, I've heard you really can't hit the broad side of a barn with an AK, even in single shot mode. I've seen it in the YouTube videos. So let me ask you straight - if you're lying prone, and really trying, like with the gun on single shot, if it lets you select that like the M16 does, can you hit a bullseye with an AK at 50 yards?

Well the AK-47 is a 7.62mm round and is actually very accurate. It's main weakness is a short distance between the sightposts. With a scope, a good quality AK has an effective range of 380-400 yards. Of course something like an M-16 has about 600 yard of effective range, but the design is also 20 years newer. My main point being, the AK-47 isn't amazing, but people saying they're not nice to shoot? They can't shoot or have a cheap AK. I have no problem being accurate with one.

Haha yes I recognised it, though I haven't played the game much at all. I do need to play more of it at some point.

A twitch shooter is a game with simplistic physics, where lightning-fast reactions pay dividends as everything's spontaneous, and guns are as accurate as they are programmed.
Stuff like Unreal Tournament, Quake and the likes. Here's an example of twitch gaming:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhi259zyakU

Instagib is a classic mode as the guns are 100% accurate and have infinite projectile speed, as well as dealing full damage. It's basically more like tag. If they're in your crosshairs when the gun goes off, they die. Simple as.

you can get about two rounds out at 300 yards, anything more than and your barrels is flailing about like a hot-dog down a hallway. its not a bad gun considering its age, and newer models carry there successor's advancements which nearly eliminate all of the true AK-47 issue's.
