well, as many here on AfterDawn know me as "docTY" or the authority on Taiyo Yuden media, i thought i would create an "official" thread to those that need an answer regarding Taiyo Yuden media...
i rarely subscribe to ANY threads, but will keep an eye on this one for those with questions regarding Taiyo Yuden...
i will try my best to help assist and resolve any issues one might have while using Taiyo Yuden media...so, feel free to ask anything your heart desires about TY :)
btw, i only got a FEW pieces of Taiyo Yuden's NEWEST 16x dvd+r media, they said my order is in queue on their "pre-release" backorder list... :(
so sad, i'm one of Taiyo Yuden's biggest fans and i'm not near the top of the list, so they only sent me 10 pieces to test out~ :) obviously, with this very LIMITED supply of TY 16x dvd+r, i can't really give anyone any ReAL results :)
btw, for all those that keep up with Taiyo Yuden products and were awaiting my response on GENUINE or authenticity inner hub readings...these NEW Taiyo Yuden 16x dvd+r with the media ID coding of YUDEN000T03 have an inner hub coding starting with "TH00xxxx" (where xxxx is the numerical batch number once again, this STILL applies to taiyo yudens across the board) :)
so a quick recap:
Taiyo Yuden rated speed & format/ media ID coding / inner hub reading
4x dvd-r = TYG01 / GD00xxxx
8x dvd-r = TYG02 / GG00xxxx
16x dvd-r = TYG03 / GH00xxxx
4x dvd+r = YUDEN000T01 / i don't know cuz i don't have any :P
8x dvd+r = YUDEN000T02 / TG00xxxx
16x dvd+r = YUDEN000T03 / TH00xxxx
there ya have it, TY currently does NOT have any DL discs at this time, but they said they are still considering making a DL offering mid to end of 2006 (realistically/optimistically speaking) :) nothing 100% as of yet, but they ARE thinking bout it...for those that were curious~ :)

@arniebear
as i believe that what you have said is 100% true and correct, there are still those who post bad results/issues with TYs...i think with the "regulars" here and their experiences with vast number of different drives and setups, using various software programs to rip/encode/burn/etc.; together we can attempt to resolve the issues people DO have from time to time with genuine TYs... :)
i, for example, have quite a few drives that i am very familiar with at this point...Sony, Pioneer, Benq, NEC, Liteon (different makes and models of course) and you can be the "go-to" guy on the Plextors (cuz i don't have one...YET) :)
lot of the addicts here in the media forum are highly experienced with their own make and model of burner that they use daily/frequently; they have probably "troubleshooted" themselves and experimented with their drives to the point of knowing it inside and out~ :) i just know a little bit about each of the drives i use, so i'm sure greater assistance (details) could be had from the various members here~
just trying to get all the Taiyo Yuden issues in one spot, naturally, issues can arise from many factors in one's setup, but if TY is the media of choice, i have a genuine interest in getting the user up and running again and eliminate "choice of media" as being a factor in their list of problems~ :)
thanks for your input buddy~ :P
@teflonmyk
i wish i could "offer" you a 'TY testing spot' position, but i do not have that authority nor that kind of "pull" w/ Taiyo Yuden...the only reason i get advanced "pre-public release" media from them and can buy media directly from Taiyo Yuden is because i have a business relationship/association with them. one of my "side-business" endeavors landed me a quasi-partnership with Taiyo Yuden directly, it's VERY small and nothing to brag about, but i do deal directly with TY now as opposed to purchasing media from online vendors or searching locally for TYs :)
i also have a "minimum" purchase amount which i have to adhere by, that is the only way i get my Taiyo Yudens so inexpensively~ :) close to $0.20/each for DVD-R format and a hair above $0.25/each for DVD+R format (1,000 piece minimum per order, just FYI). i don't know why there is a discrepency in price between the formats, but i guess it's because it's the same way from online vendors (dvd+r format usually costs more than the DVD-R counterpart) :)
i know for the casual Taiyo Yuden buyer, what is a few cents right? well, when you deal with THOUSANDS of pieces in an order, those few cents certainly add up fast to the tune of few hundred U.S. dollars if i were to buy from say supermediastore/rima/meritline, etc...
anyways, before i bore anyone else with these trivial details..i'll end this post here :)
thanks guys for ALL the help you've given me in the past and for the countless number of members you've helped before, now, and in the future~ :P keep up the great work...

i have a couple questions..
first, i just went through my first 100 pack DVD-R 8x after recently switching over to ty and had no problems, however on my second 100 pack, the first about 12 discs look as if the there is overspray all over the bottom of the disc..im no expert by far so i only say it "looks" like overspray hoping someone knows what im talking about without trying to get pics of it..are these defective discs? should i call the store or do i have nothing to worry about?
second, ive read alot of ppl suggest burning at 4x which i am currently at, i believe it was doc i read state you burn at 8x? (im not 100% so forgive me if im wrong) if so is that a better speed to burn with DVD-R 8x media or is it basically just trial and error..
thanks

First off, I'd call the vendor that I purchased the TY from. Tell them about the "overspray." Their response should give you a good idea of the type of customer service that you can expect. With 4 or 5 reputable online vendors for TY, you don't have to settle for shoddy customer service. Personally, with the amount of TY that I have purchased and burned with absolutely no problems, I'd just pitch those 12 to the wind. I would still contact the vendor to see how they responded, though. It is definitely rare, in my experience, to get bad TY discs, but it IS possible (as you now know).
I, too, burn my 8X TY (both formats) @8X. Do a couple of burns at different speeds and scan with Nero CD/DVDSpeed (if your drive supports it) to see what gives YOU the best results. As you said, "Trial and error" for each individual setup. However, I am willing to bet that 8X will give you superior results...

@thydemise
teflonmyk answered your questions very accurately, it WAS me that burn my 8x rated TYs @8x, in both formats...teflonmyk happens to burn in a very similar fashion/speed as me (if my memory serves me correctly, we BOTH have the pioneer dvr-109 with buffalo firmware to enable bitsetting and get OUR best quality scans burning @8x...this also holds true on the Liteon SOHW-1693S we both have in common too) :)
depending on what drive you are using, it is through "trial and error" that you will find YOUR best results...give 8x burns a try, if you are happy with 4x burning on TYs, then by all means stick with it, but i get better quality scan results @8x PERSONALLY~ :)
as to the "overspray", i would def. contact the vendor you purchased from too...getting a "bad batch" here and there is NOT TOO COMMON for Taiyo Yuden, BUT, with EVERY manufacturer out there, issues DO arise...nobody is "perfect" 100% of the time, that is just not possible...while it's unfortunate that you received a "bad batch" on your 2nd 100-pack of TYs, quite a few places both online and locally WILL accept a return/refund you on defective media...good luck

those are just fine...check my very 1st post in this thread...your TYG02s match up just fine with what i listed : GG00xxxx or GG000xxx (the xxxx or xxx varies in numerical value, naturally, the xxxx being numerical values to signify the batch number...so, for example, a MORE RECENT batch produced would be ie. GG001234, an older one that you apparently got would be along the lines of GG000123)
no worries, you got GENUINE TYs right there..good luck with your 1st batch~ :0

p.s thelox714, you need not worry w/ rima.com, they ALWAYS send genuine Taiyo Yudens... :)

Hi Kivory666,
I got about 50 of the Yuden-000-T03-000 sent to me by a friend in Yorkshire England, they are made under the Plextor Brand name. I really don't find anything special about them or anything wrong for that matter, they are just about on par with the 16X+Verbs I have.

The first time you will probably see them is when the Plextor 760 is released, and who knows when that will be. The Plextor 760 is supposed to burn these at 18X and in Europe they have been selling the Yuden000-T03-000 both printables and Laquer finish for months now, they sell them at SVP.com but they will not ship to the USA. I have been in contact with Rima.com, a leading reseller of Taiyo Yuden media and they have no time frame for the release of this media.

@aland
i've known about the Plextor brand name selling the YUDEN000T03s for quite a few months now, seemingly, creaky over in the UK, CAN get his hands on some media that we over here in the U.S. are limited to...
(ie. Verbatim TYs as well as the Plextor 16x dvd+r TYs) :)
that is the problem with various manufacturers of media, Taiyo Yuden included...worldwide, there will be some people that CAN obtain certain media well before their peers in other countries, this is very much the case here with Taiyo Yuden and their U.S. distribution too~ :P
rima.com happens to be a pretty large reseller of Taiyo Yuden, they even have gone as far as NOT carrying Taiyo Yuden's "valueline" of dvd-r because of what SOME people say about them...this is to only protect their reputation as the debate on the "valueline" vs. "premiumline" of Taiyo Yuden has been raging on since the middle of last year~ :)
Quote: I really don't find anything special about them or anything wrong for that matter, they are just about on par with the 16X+Verbs I have.
i was never stating the YUDEN000T03s are "better" than any other 16x dvd+r medias in general. i was simply letting the people in the U.S. know that i got my hands on a few pieces to "test out" :)
supposedly, these Plextor branded YUDEN000T03s have an "extra" protective layer on them, to prevent scratches and such, but since i do not have any Plextor branded media, i can't give you a definitive answer as to whether that is true or not. since you have a 50-pack, perhaps you could tell ME if they do or not?
while i DO know, as with any company that uses Taiyo Yuden as their manufacturer (Fuji/Sony) here in the states, you will see the TOP surface being different than the OEM Taiyo Yudens (silver shinys/silver lacquer). the top "writeable area" is what stands out as being different (companys have their own logos with a few lines you could use a sharpie to write on). also, i know for a fact that the Plextor branded YUDEN000T03s are also GOLD in color (top writeable surface) and they (plextor) DO NOT offer a inkjet printable disc at this time...
it's good that some members are adding some info to this thread, naturally, our "outside of the U.S." members will have access to media that WE in the U.S. will not be available to get to try (unless you have a friend in Europe that sends you media, as in your case aland~ hehe)
@alkohol
don't know when the YUDEN000T03s will be available locally at say bestbuy or staples, i have yet to find a company in the U.S. that Taiyo Yuden has agreed to manufacture the 16x dvd+r for...
@everyone else
keep the good info coming, i'm off to clear up a debate on "valueline" vs "premiumline" TYs now... :)
whew, now THAT was a bit of typing...
