See even fish know CMC Mag is bad. I guess that puts them slightly above 12 year olds and members of CD-Freaks on the intelligence scale. I'll add PS2nfo.com to the list. Cheers!

hi gurnard buddy,

i know ur a strong Ritek man and i fully respect you for that~ :)

i get a LOT of PM's from various members asking me this or that about media, it's not always Taiyo Yuden they inquire about, but, some of the lesser known media that most people have never heard about... i can't say i've tried ALL the various media out there, but i have in fact tried a good 80% of the media out there (at least what is available to me here in the U.S.) :P

so, they ask me for MY PERSONAL opinion on said media of choice and i give them an honest answer, from MY experience with them...but, like so many "generalizations" on this site from various members, you can imagine i want to keep all these "PMs" i receive about media down to a minimum...it's not so much i don't appreciate members turning to me when they are having issues with whichever media, it's more about posting their question here in the dvd media forum whereas they can get MORE opinions about where their problems lie.

but, yeah...i still stand by my outstanding success i've had on my own Ridata Ritek (non-printable) 8x DVD-R RitekG05s, they've held up all this time and that to me if PROOF that Ritek is not as bad as SOME members make them to be...

the whole issue with the "printable G05s", that i can believe, is another entirely different scenario...i've read/heard MANY horror stories with the printable flavor, but i've also read MANY bad stories about the "regular" G05 dyes...so, much of the opinions here on AfterDawn come from user experience...what works WELL for some, MAY NOT work well for others on their individual setups~ :) so many factors, so little time... :P

have a good one my friend, i find nothing wrong with Ritek (at least in the past they were very favorable in my eyes), the fact i haven't purchased any "recent" Ritek offerings is WHY i can not judge or rate them today...whether or not the quality has been on the decline, i myself, will never know~ :)

hi DOC :)
this is the docTY thread, and thats the way it should stay.
thats why i,ll never comment on my choice, because there is always some one out there that will try to start a war, just for the sake of it.
i'll pop in now and again to say hullo (unless of course i try some TY and have anything to ask)
but lets be fair, afew of us have got it down to a fine art, and could chuck a pancake in there and get a decent burn. LOL

Taiyo Yuden Media Rules! Second to none. Only Media that comes close is Verbatim. I use both, but definitely "Prefer" TYs. You have a good one docTY~!

I also have nothing bad to say about ritek media as long as you stay with the genuine branded ritek ridata's. I never had quite the success with G04's that a lot of ppl have had but that was when my only drive was a litey LDW- 451S and I firmly believe that the older liteys prefered +r media.

I never had a lick of trouble with the branded ritek ridata 8x dvd+r's whether they were coded as ritek R03 or ricohjpn. I have to admit some that I put sticky paper labels on did give me problems but that wasn't riteks fault.

At one time Ritek was the best way to go since it was and imo still is the best budget media and due to TY's and verbatim's having such an outrageous price tag. Now that TY's and verb's have become much more competitively priced there is no reason not to go with one of them (the good stuff). My 2 pennies.

On a side note, I have never used nor will I ever use any G05's since I use dvd+r exclusively and booktype to dvd-rom. I still have about 30 ritek dvd+r's out of a 100 pk that I use to make backups for friends on. They don't cause any of my friends any problems.

Been using Verbatims (with good results), but want my next batch of

DVD-R's to be Genuine Ty's.
(hear nothing but good things from other AD senior members)

Thinking about getting the 16X shinny lacquer tops.........

If I get the 16X's is it okay to burn at 8X's speed ?

I've always burned at 4X's before, but saw some other forum mentioning the 1/2 times max speed rule.

Say if you get media rated @8X max. to burn @ 4X.

& if you get media rated @ 16X max., it's okay to burn @ 8X speed ?

Is there any truth to it ?

I have not had any problems with my Riteks either. I do not use the printables, but the older GO3's I have still scan excellent using PlexTools. The newer GO5's are also burning great, like them better than the MIT Sony's.

I've had good results with the MIT Sony's, but only time will tell if they're more reliable than RitekG05. CD/DVD Speed scans are only half the battle, playback counts for a lot.

The MIT Sony's burn okay but my older Toshiba really doesn't like them, I put one in and makes squeeky noises. It only does it on the MIT -R's. It is fine on booktyped +R's and of course loves both formats in the MIJ's but those are Yudens.

Yeah that's probably why they work on mine, I have a Sony DRU-810A. The MIT Sony's have consistenly graded out better for me on Nero CD/DVD Speed, but I haven't watched any of them all the way through, so there could be unforseen playback issues. Plus I use Nero quick scan, because the full scan takes too long. So it could miss some PIF spikes here and there. Unfortunately, my burner doesn't support PI/PO scans.

Yeah, they play fine on my Sony it is just the Toshiba. My daughter has a Toshiba like mine only a few months newer and it hates Sony MIT's to it will even give the dirty disk message. But any of the MIT's that I play on my Sony have no playback issues. My best bet is to just stick to TY's and Verbatims both brand are accepted by all my players.

Yeah If I could get TY's or Verb's locally I would. For awhile Wal-Mart carried the High Grade Maxell MIJ's, but they were replaced with Memosux. There's no CompUSA or Staples' near my house, and the best Wally World offers is the MIT Sony's. I use TYG02 for PS2 games. Since I order them from Supermediastore.com, I don't care to use them for movies.

My shipment of TY's from supermedia arrived yesterday. Just in time I was down to my last 125, but I still had 100 of Verbs and some Sony TY's left. If you can find the MIJ Fuji they code as TY also. My WalMart still has the MIJ Maxell until they run out. Wish I had and Office Depot nearby they have some good sales.

Lol. You were down to 225 discs huh? How many do you burn a week? I only have like 100 discs right now myself, but they'll last me a month or so. It's been slow with PS2 games, I've "acquired" most of the games I want. Maybe I'm a cynic, it just doesn't seem like there are a lot of movies worth backing up anymore. What do you guys think?

Variety is the spice of life, can't wear the same tie all the time. Media is like that too, every once in awhile you need a change. Plus I never met a sale I didn't like, to my wife's despair.

Anyway back on topic, Hey Doc someone brought to my attention they bought some TDK DVD+R's that had the YudenXXX Media ID. I didn't know TDK made TY's. I know Sony, Fuji, make TY's, and you can get the Verb TY's in the UK, whatever companies are manufactured/manufactured by TY? Thanks for the info. Cheers!

Tokijin,

You got that backwards. TY makes some media for other brand names or rather other brands buy their media from TY and then put their name on the label. Nobody makes TY media except Taiyo Yuden. I knew TDK bought some of their dvd-r media from TY but I've never seen or heard of them being used for TDK's +r format.

johnman58,

You can go by this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 to some extent. You can never be guaranteed you're going to get TY's as a lot of brands buy their media from several different suppliers. It's not even 100% guaranteed you will get genuine TY's when you buy TY branded media.

@Tokijin You are sadly mistaken about these TDK 8XDVD+R. These code out as Taiyo Yudens. Have had no problems at all and was a fool for not buying 5 stacks of 100 when I saw them on sale $16.99 at BBuy. Here's the scan:

I didn't say that there was definately no TDK DVD+r media that coded out as being made by TY (YUDEN), just that I have never seen any or heard of anybody getting any. Usually in the +r format you will get either ricohjpn or cmc mags. The ricohjpn's wouldn't bother me but you've got a better chance of getting the cmags. I'm not willing to take that chance.

You've got a better chance of getting some discs that code out as TY's if you buy some sony (mij) or fuji (mij). With the sonys, even if you don't get TY's they are generally good media.

I agree 110%. The PS2 forums could use someone with your knowledge of media. It's one thing when I say it, but when you and Doc say it, people tend to listen. My expertise is mainly in modchips and general PS2 stuff, I'm relatively new to the quality media, DVD movie backup aspect of DVD burning. I've always used good media, but I just did so because I was told to, not because I knew the reasons why. By talking to you, doc, ForknDave, Gear79, Andmerr, Alkohol, arniebear, and several others, I'm very confident that I have a good grasp of Media, firmware, burning software, ripping, and different burners. I've had nary a coaster because of bad media in months. So I must be doing something right. Cheers!

DakotaFan,

My preferences in media is very similiar to yours. Although I do like TY's, I put them second to verbatims. I've had the best results with verbs. Never any freezing, pausing or pixelating with them where as I have had some very minor and seldom pausing issues with TY's. I would then go with sony followed by branded ritek ridata +r's. I never had real good results with G04 dvd-r's and have never tried any G05 dvd-r's. This of course is just my preference and opinion and what works best with my particular setup.

Yeah I can't speak to the reliability of TY's as far as movies are concerned. I can however say without any hesitation, that TY's are a better choice for Console reliablilty than Verb's. I've encountered more people who have problems with Verbs than TY's when it comes to PS2 backups. This is from my own personal experience and numerous threads in the PS2 forums. When there's issues with TY's and backing up PS2 games, it almost always comes down to user error.

Like doc, I would say TY is my favorite media with Verbatim being a close second. I haven't tried any MIJ Sony or Maxell media yet, but I'm sure I will at some time.

This is the media I have on hand at the moment:
8x DVD-R Taiyo Yuden (TYG02) - I'm very low on these. Only about 10 or so left. I need some more TY media. I wanna get the plus format, though. Great media!
16x DVD+R Verbatim (MCC004) - I bought a 50 pack of these on sale at Best Buy. I have around 35-40 left. Very good media.
8x DVD+R Ridata (R03) - I bought a 100 pack of these for real cheap at Supermediastore and have about 80-85 left. Pretty good media, but not great.

I burn all my media at 4x regardless of what the advertised speed is. I find this to be the best and most stable speed to burn at. I haven't had any problems since I've been burning at this speed.
