I'm telling you CMC Mag's quality is unparalleled. Yeah I get the 8x TYG02's. I seem to get optimum results burning at 4x. I recently switched to Sony DVD-R's for movies. I was tired of using Ritek G05, especially with all the failing Ritek's out there (though I think those were mainly printable). So far so good, Sony is lower rung first rate media. I definitely get fewer max PIF's then I get with RitekG05. Unfortunately the Sony DRU-810A doesn't support PIE scans. I could cross flash with BenQ firmware and use it with Qsuite, but it isn't worth the risk. I use TYG02 for all my PS2 backups, 130+ games with 0 coasters/boot failures. TY for life! DocTY for life! Cheers!

@Tokijin

If you're going with the Sony media, then make sure it has "mij", otherwise it won't be a Yuden media. My moto is "made in japan" for all FUJI, SONY & Maxell DVD+R media, if I buy them locally. Unless I'm getting MCC003 or MCC004, then that's another story.

I've had good results with the Sony's made in Taiwan. They're not TY's, but my CD/DVD Speed scans indicate they're better than RitekG05. I only use those for movies, I use TY's for PS2 backups. Long live CMC Mag! If CD-Freaks thinks it's good, it must be lol.

are those the only numbers u see near the inner hub hwrench? and are these the 8x DVD+R format? getting the MIJ Sony 8x DVD-R does NOT gurantee Taiyo Yudens...SOME members (very few) have gotten TYs recently with the MIJ 8x DVD-R, but, most do not...

@hwrench

do you see something along the lines of "TG001234" just outside of the inner ring? i think i make a generalization when i say "inner hub ring"...these numbers to validate Taiyo Yuden are not on the innermost ring (the clear part)...but rather, just ouside of it before the matte/silver surface part begins~ :)

let me know, if they ID as YUDEN000T02, you SHOULD find the numbers i speak of upon closer inspection...just OUTSIDE of the clear part on the disc~

I'm about to make my first purchase of TY's and was wondering if I typically will get better quality burns w/ 4x or 8x? Or doesn't it matter?

Thanks!

@CStan

It depends on your drive. Some people has confirmed that the BenQ gets better results when you burned them at top speed, but I guess it won't hurt to burn them at 4X - 8X if you don't have the BenQ.

My DRU710A a rebadged SOHW 1633S burned them flawlessly regardless if it's 4X or 8X. However, I get better quality scores when I burned at 4X though.

Sorry, I meant is there difference in quality between 4x TY's or 8x TY's --- not the burn speed.

If a spindle of 100 4x TY's is $25 and a spindle of 100 8X TY's is $25, which should I buy?

@cstan

well, GENERALLY speaking, no, there is no quality difference between the various rated speeds of Taiyo Yuden media... :)

i PERSONALLY prefer the 8x in both the DVD-R and DVD+R over the 16x DVD-R format, that's just me... :)

but, when speaking between the 4x TYs and the 8x TYs...i'm ASSUMING you mean the DVD-R format, because even though i use Taiyo Yuden very extensively, i have yet to ever use a 4x DVD+R TY disc~ :)

so, if you are asking between the 4x TYG01s vs the 8x TYG02s...they are identical in quality...i've burned MANY TYG01s @4x with perfect results, and also TYG02s @8x with equally impressive results...the reason i even said anything remotely negative about the 16x TYG03s is because i "tried" a few @16x (which in my opinion is a bit fast to burn media) and i got some pretty POOR quality scans, while acceptable by MOST people's standards...they do not compare to the quality scans i get using the 4x and 8x rated media...burning TYG03s @8x proved much better, but, since the TYG03s are more expensive, i suggest you SAVE your extra $$$ and get either the 4x or 8x TYs :)

if you need me to explain MORE in detail regarding each one, lemme know..but that should pretty much cover it~

you are very welcome Cstan~ welcome to AD, there is a LOT to be gained here (knowledge-wise) :)

come on back to this thread once you start using either the 4x or 8x TYs, i'd like to know how they work out for you... you really can't go wrong with either, as long as your firmware is up to date and you have a good handle on the software programs you plan to use...you will be good to go

happy burning

The Sony's SONY08D1
made in Taiwan are kicking the crap out of the RitekG05's I was using for backing up movies, according to my CD/DVD Speed scans. The Riteks are gone baby. Hey doc, do you know what the code printed on the bottom the silver thermal TYG02's is? I use these: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-... The code on the bottom of the disc right before the disc starts is GG000077. Does that sound right to you? Thanks for the info. Congrats on getting your own thread. Cheers!

@tokijin

all genuine TYG02s, regardless if they are silver shiny/silver lacquer, white hub printable, silver inkjet printable, etc...will have the GG00xxxx coding on the inner hub~ :)

side note: the xxxx i mentioned above can and WILL always vary, but the prefix is always the same...for 8x DVD-R format, TYs will have the "GG" prefix, followed by 2 or 3 "0", then the batch number accordingly~ :)

in your case, with the batch number being "77", you got a slightly "older" batch, nothing wrong with when they were made, they are every bit as good as ones with say for example a GG001234 batch..it's just TY's way of keeping track of where and when they were produced~

yours should be just fine...yea, you don't see me talking about Ritek as much as i did before since i've long since stopped using them...i happen to get "good batches" about 2 years ago before the decline in quality control...i haven't bought any recent Ritek's so i wouldn't know from personal experience how "bad" they have become... :) i just go based on the experiences of other members here that i trust...

docTy~

good day to you

Thanks for the info. Screw Dr. Phil, we should have the DocTY hour lol. Yeah I just don't trust Ritek's from what I've seen on here. They've worked for me okay, but I don't care to use anything less than top notch media. Ritek is second class in my opinion. I liked the Maxell DVD+R's made in Japan, but they were replaced with... Memosux in Colors. That's Wal-Mart for you lol. Not only can I purchase CMC Mag coasters, I can purchase them in color. I can appreciate the pretty colors when I take them skeet shooting. Cheers!

In regards to the G05s, I recently rescanned some printables that I burned a couple of months ago after I bought 50 for $9.99 to test.... Result: Horrendous :-( They burned decently initially, but they deteriorated rather quickly and dramatically... I have 45 left if anyone wants them... LOL

i'm sorry if you tested them based on my recommendation, i didn't mean for your to lose out on $9.99; forkndave was the member i trust in terms of the "printable G05s" going bad quickly after they are burned and printed upon. :)

i do not have any printable Riteks, so, i never stated i knew the quality of the printable ones, namely the G05s. :P i only have the Ridata Ritek G05s from about 2 years ago and those still holding up pretty well for me, i've rescanned a few of them and they still maintain LOW 90's quality scores on Nero cd-dvd/speed~

anyways, imma take the Riteks outta my sig, just so people don't go blamin' me for them not working well~ LOL

have a good one buddy
