I'd use a 380W with an 8600GTS on a good day. But an 8800GT? I know it's well capable, but what about headroom for future upgrades and the like? I'd rather have the peace of mind by using an overkill PSU, especially because of the unqestionable quality of Corsair.
I have 2 Corsair PSUs and they both work flawlessly. Extremely high quality build and rock solid stable voltages.
The Enermax Liberty ran near 24/7 for 2 years before the fan controller went out. The PSU still works fine but wails like a banshee, lol.
As far as power for the price, though.. I'd have to say Corsair 450VX or OCZ StealthXStream. Both of them are solid, quiet, cool running, and cheap :)

the earthwatts is made by seasonic, and is very efficient and very quiet.
IMO ranks as one of the best PSUs made, and for only £35

35 quid? blimey, I paid a lot less than that, only £27 for mine at ebuyer.
Don't forget I run a 520W with an overclocked Q6600 and an HD4870X2. 380W with an 8800GT? It's almost overkill! haha
Call me cynical, but I just don't trust the OCZ units enough given their big ripple.

As far as I'm concerned, OCZs are solid units. Maybe not the best but definitely better quality than any generic crappy brand. I've only heard good things about them from everyone. You're the only naysayer sam :P

I think PSUs have a lot to do with video cards. Usually, the video cards you get play a big factor in which PSU you get.
But, fair enough.
The 4870 is sweet. I can play anything MAXED at native res! Oblivion is beautiful and FEAR is surreal. Yay for high def monitors!
Crysis at 1920 x 1200 is owned... with mods of course :) In your face Crytek :P

psssht how about the 9870X4 (that sounds like an AMD phenom CPU lol)
and id agree the PSU has alot to do with video cards, and IMO should be discussed.
try running a 4870 on a 1000W Q-Tec PSU and watch it blow up.
Q-Tec make the worst PSUs EVER. no questions asked.

I'm a naysayer, because about PSUs, you absolutely cannot take a chance. OCZ were quizzed about the irregular output waveform of their units, and their response "We don't know". I don't hear OCZ units going bad much, but I just don't have the confidence that proper brands that pass all tests with flying colours achieve - The Earthwatts series, all the Corsairs, BeQuiet's units, and pretty much anything by Tagan - with so many flawless competitors, why take a risk? As a Qtec owner, Spam's post sends a shiver down my spine - want to see a molten floppy drive? Too bad, I binned it - was kicking up a right pong...
Oh, and to kep it graphics card related, the HD4670 is a stunner, for a short-length PCIe card with no power connector required. It plays Crysis, and not badly either!
Edit: For the record, the Ebuyer Extra Value units (branded 'Magna') are identical to Qtecs in construction, i.e. they're the same units. Don't buy a value PSU - it shouldn't need saying, but some people don't listen.

Which older card does the 4670 compare to?

I'm not sure on the exact model, it beats the HD3870, I know that much. The HD3870 makes 33fps at 1360x768 all Medium, the HD4670 makes 30fps at 1280x720, but all high.

well most of the time 90% the 3850 is on par or beats the 4670.
like the 3850 it has 320 shader proccessors, but it has a 128 bit interface, unlike the 3850s 256bit interface.
also, it has the 4800 series ROP AA, instead of the poor shader based A< so applying AA i would assume it would even beatt he 3870 in games with 4xAA applied.
its a brilliant card, esp for about £60, at 1280x1024 most agmes maxed shouldnt bee a problem, even with AA, and it has no PCIE power cable, meaning its the best card in the world that uses less than 75watts (the PCIE slot gives 75 watts)

Prebuilt PC manufacturers and portable PC users are going to love this card. You can crossfire it too with 90% gains in some titles, for the lulz. Make a 4870 out of it... haha!

Should keep the cost of the build down, so I reckon you're onto a winner with that. :P
E5200, some PC6400 memory, HD4670, basic PSU like an Earthwatts, basic case, makes a surprisingly capable gaming PC for almost nothing.

Yeah the E5200 is a pretty good deal too. Only 85 bucks and should overclock pretty well even on stock cooling.

oems have ordered HUGE amounts of them. hundreds of thousands.
and ati could be running out, as they have had so much demand.
the 4670 beats the 9500GT hands down, and can rival and beat the 3850/9600GSO
the lower ends are also beating nvidias 9400GS and the onboard 780G board is thrashing the 8200 onboard.
ATI have a clean sweep this time round, come on nvidia for the next round, and force price drops from ATI :D
dont you love competition?

why not?
if american gvrnmnt can bail out the debt, and start up borowing again, the uk fste will increace brining up the value of the pound which leads to cheaper 4870 for me :)
