Since when is a lot of borrowing good for the economy? It's spending that helps. Borrowing is the reason these companies got into this mes in the first place.

The only reason the Government helped out these companies is because the economy would collapse without them.

As a person who owns 5 shares of AMD stock, the recent increases have been sweet. I don't really plan on buying or selling, I just love AMD :P

Yeah, but that borrowing has to be regulated. The biggest depression in America was due to rampant borrowing, just as the current economic crisis.

I'll have to say, I've found a game the 4870 can't handle at 1920.

Flight Simulator X still runs like crap, lol, but that's a given on any system at any res. But it looks sooo good, Crysis is jealous. Can't really count it as a game, seeing as it's a commercial flight simulator, but photorealism is within reach with FSX. Dx10 makes it die, so I'm glad I don't use it :P At least FSX makes real use of Dx10 with the water, lighting, volumetric effects and all. I've seen it running full Dx10 mode on a dual 8800GTS 640 system, and it's mind-blowing how photorealistic it is at times.

As for Dx10 and Vista as a whole... pure crap. I've tried many PCs with Vista and it's the most frustrating OS I've ever used. Incompatibilities, crazy system requirements, bugs, "security".

The system requirements jump was too large for Vista, IMO. Microsoft aims to make an OS everyone can use, but most of my friends' PCs can't run it or run it like crap. It's jittery as hell and slow to respond with a single core 3800+ and 1GB of RAM which, IMO, is far above the standard for your average home PC(at least in my area). And you're almost forced to use 4GB of RAM if you want to game on it. The OS is a memory hog no matter what way you look at it. Technological advancement in mind or not, you shouldn't need a Geforce 7600 and 2GB of RAM just to use your OS. I have plenty of friends buzzing along happily(and gaming quite well still) with Win XP, 1GB of RAM, P4s, and Geforce 6's. Vista throws that out the window.

IMO, you shouldn't need more than 2GB of RAM for games. When I play Crysis(Win XP Pro) it takes up 850MB of RAM after 2 hours of play. And I still have more memory left over. Your OS shouldn't eat up a whole GB of RAM on its own. It's just ridiculous.

Also IMO, 4GB of RAM is COMPLETELY pointless as of yet(kind of aimed at sam). I have seen NOTHING eat 4GB of RAM yet. If you want it, fine, it can't hurt. But if you're planning to upgrade from an older system, 2GB is all you should really need. I have a feeling that the 2GB standard will last far longer than the 1GB standard did. We'll see.

Just trying to get it back onto hardware here before we lose another thread...

Purely a matter of opinion. I just can't seem to love it. Win XP is better for performance, ease of use, and just for the plain fact that I've been using it for almost 6 years and found no reason to switch over. Dx10 is still practically useless after 2 years. Take a hint MS. Just give us Aeroglass for XP...

hehe for me, vista>xp any day :D

i love it, and i cant go back.

and DX10 crysis is just amazing. the way the lighting fromt he sun goes through the water and trees. wow

i so long as i get 15FPS on a 4870 at 1920 in dx10, ill be happy :D

when i run crysis 1920 maxed out 64 bit dx10 on visa 64, i get 0.4FPS and it eats (whole system about 3.1GBs, and crysis about 1.1 of those, so for me with many other apps runing, everest, other sensor tools, sidebar, wmp, im using 2GB.

Admittedly, Ther are benefits to going with Vista. In particular, IF you have a system that runs it nicely, it handles programs and file management on the HDD much faster.

But at this point, I suppose it's just my hesitation to learn a new OS :P

Maybe at my next upgrade here(crossfire), I'll make the purchase for Vista. I'd really like to see Dx10 Crysis in full action. And also admittedly, Vista has caught up A LOT in game performance.

But then this also means more RAM usage which means I'll have to find another identical kit or get new RAM. Which I really don't want to do. This RAM is so nice :(

True that.

I think Vista is cool in lots of ways and not so cool in a few ways. I'd be willing to give it a try with a fresh install on my PC.

Ok then I will :P

Crossfire is going to be for the next big system hogs. The first one that comes out means crossfire for me.

I want to see what ATi/AMD will do to top the GTX280. They've been trading blows like this for years. Ain't technology grand? :P

Flight Sim X ONLY runs on nvidia cards, no exceptions.
Considering I can max Crysis on my X2 at 2560, the problem with games now is not how demanding they are, but whether they support CF or not, if they don't, they're more likely to lag than top end demanding titles, as they will work with dual cards. Rainbow Six vegas for example, lags more than Crysis (both have no AA) and Flatout: Ultimate carnage with AA runs much worse than Crysis.... Just goes to show, eh?

Nah, it's a better performing card overall, but there are still certain titles the GTX280 will mop the floor with the HD4870X2, few, but some remain nonetheless. Estuansis means a single card - who knows, it may happen.

Think logically, when not in CF mode, 4870X2 = 4870 (maxing more than 512MB VRAM is unusual in a non-CF title, so unusual I've never seen it), and we all know the 4870 is a GTX260 beater (and even then only just), not a GTX280 beater, so it stands to reason the GTX280 will win - and in many cases, non-CF titles are TWIMTBP titles, so the GTX280 gets further ahead. Then there's Flight Sim X, which I'm amazed even opens on an ATI card.

Actually, Flatout UC is much better for me than Crysis. I use 4xAA at native res and it plays smoooooth.

At 2560, 4xAA hurts when you can't use CF. I get around 30fps typically, which is not great at all for a racing game without motion blur, and it drops to the high teens during crashes - runs during the 20s for the most part during destruction derbies and stunt races, a bit too low to be considered playable.

Crysis is obviously without the AA, but since it can use crossfire, for an X2 owner, it's barely any worse than Flatout - Enable AA and it runs like dump, whereas without AA it's reasonably solid except for a couple of bits in Paradise Lost - Flatout UC is all solid with no AA, runs perfectly - but for games like that, AA makes a huge difference.
