The TY -R DLs are currently not on the market in the US due to "compatability" issues. I got that straight from TY USA. It also appears that the TY DLs in Europe are pretty scarce or possibly discontinued.
Maybe TY is working on the situation. In my experience no one making DLs with the "inverse stack method" is having much luck with consistancy, other than consistantly bad. Verbatim is the only manufacturer that I know that can make a consistantly good DL product, but that's with the old, more expensive way.
Maybe it's a firmware thing. Whatever it is, someone I'm sure is working on it as DL media sales doubled last year and the first manufacturers who can get it right stand to make a killing just by undercutting Verbatim by a nickle a disc.

Greensman & Loco!!!
Not thinking of spending $64.00 that's just an old saying $64.00 Question ! Was just interested in the Samsung as a possible replacement for The Benq 1655 whenever it Dies ? May just buy one and keep it on the side until the inevitable happens ? @bigtoxy,
if you are looking for a replacement lightscribe drive the
new lite on 20a1h is not bad. its not even close to the quality
of 1655 but its not too bad.

I'm in the same boat as you BIGTOXY and have actually been thinking of a SATA PCI card so that I can run one of these baby's. Ah the list just keeps growing and growing.

Would a SATA PCI sard make it run any slower seeing as it's not a direct connection to the mobo?

I actually haven't researched it that much, but I'd venture to guess not being a direct connection there will be some loss....how much I don't know and it may be negligible.

Well, I don't know how SATA and PCI match up speed wise for the connection, but if you're downsizing SATA > PCI then surely there would be a loss?

I got a sata2 card inorder to install a sata burner & hd. The specs said: 66 MHz PCI bus supports up to 266MB/sec burst data transfer rate.
I'ts a Promise SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA II Controller Card and I haven't had any problems with it that I know of. It's the only ide sata2 card with 4 ports that I've found.
Running a Lite-on LH-20a1s and a Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive off it, fast & quiet.

Think that confirms there shouldn't be any problem with the PCI option then :-)

@ BT69,
I forget your age sometimes and don't "revert" back a few generations to "recognize" the speech you're throwing out. LOL. Yes I remember the $64 question. :) There are a few Optical drives that I would look at the Samsung SH-S203B is one of them. :) Thanks for visiting and don't be a stranger. :)

@hobbit,

I installed my Benq DW1655 (BCIB) thing last night and had an interesting experience. I went to burn a Ritek DL and the burning stopped with an error at the layer break. Tried another Ritek disc incase it was a bad disc and had same result. Reflashed my drive to BCHB and tried again, same thing. Then I tried burning a Verb 2.4x DL an had sucess (even got a 90 on a Benq CD Speed scan!).
Apparently the Benq drive is unable to burn the inverse stack DLs?
Anyone else encounter this?

I can't say that I have, but then again I'm unwilling to spend my money on anything but Verbatim DL discs.

greensman,
I'm cross-posting this post of mine from cincyrob's scan thread for discussion purposes.
Been playing with some Ritek S04 +R DLs and have had a break-through. I don't know if the break-through is due to a change in disc quality within the spindle or from cleaning the drive, though I'm leaning toward the drive cleaning(I probably should do it more often:P).
First off, heres a Verb DL burned with my Benq DW1655 for reference sake.
The first Riteks I tried wouldn't burn past the layer break, stopping with an error "unable to burn to xxxxxxx location" which was located just after the layer break. I'm suspecting the laser was unable to refocus. Here's a CD/DVD Speed create disc of the Benq with the Ritek media. After this failure, I used some canned air and ran a DVD cleaner in it but didn't expect any improvement since I had been able to burn the Verb DL. Didn't do a new burn as it was late.
Was in contact with Ritek and was going to do a RMA and they wanted some failure samples, so decided to run some non-ripped samples. Lo and behold, the darn thing went to completion. Here's the first burn, a 2.4x burn with a 4x scan on the Benq.
The 2nd burn had a finalization error, here's the 3rd burn, burned @ 6x with scan set @ 8x.
Here's #4, a 6x Burn with a 4x Scan.
The next 3 are scans of the same disc for comparison purposes, the 1st 2 scans are on the Benq, the last is scanned on my Lite-On LH-20A1H.
6x Burn, 8x Scan(Benq)
6x Burn, 4xCLV Scan (Benq)
6x Benq Burn, 4x LH-20A1H Scan.
I tried 8x scans on the Lite-on but was getting a 80-90 PIF peak at the start so dropped back to 4x.
I'm going to start a schedule of routine burner cleaning, instead of waiting until I encounter a problem and see if my results increase. My house is old and not that tightly sealed gets dusty quickly.
It's possible that the Riteks (and maybe all the inverse stack process DLs)require more precision out of the burners while the Verbatims are more fault tolerant. (throwing this out there for discussion purposes)

@greensman,
I installed my lite on 20aih last night and used the link
you provided to download the firmware flash. I only did 2 burns
with it last night but it came out pretty good. I just want to
say thansk for the link and all the help you offered.
By the way, is the 20a1p suppose to be just as good. Only without
the lightscribe capability?? Because i am thinking about stocking
up with such low price at new egg.

@Yujenh,
Your lite-on lh20a1h burns will just get better as it learns your media, I know, I have two!
You might want to consider the Lite-On DH-20A3P, it's their newest I think. I think I know someone who might have one, but haven't heard how it performs yet, but it sounds like it has better capabilities from what I've read on CDF. ;D

greensman,
(since this is more of a discussion thread, I'll answer you here :D)
I seemed to remember that my Benq burned riteks fairly well, but that was more than a year ago. I thought my benq was dying when I started scanning and saw the "White Cliffs of Dover" at the layer break on some of the ritek D01s. The scans just kept getting worse so I actually swapped it out for my first Lite-on. (The Benq was a replacement for my Sony DRU-810A, btw.)
I remember cleaning the benq at that time but the burns didn't improve. Maybe ritek has improved their quality since then?
I'm going to set up some sort or schedule (written, btw so I remember) so I routinely clean the drives.
I emailed ritek with my findings and will post back what I hear.

thanks guys,
I didnt even know the existence of the DH-20A3P.
its only $2 betweem retail and the oem. The oem version
is a buck cheaper then the LH-20A1p.
Does anybody know the difference between the LH and DH??
also, my pioneer 111 died and thats why i installed the 20a1h.
i really thinking to get either 112 or another liteion.
if its lite on then it will very likey be the 20a3p. since
its really cheap.
The lightscribe really dont do me much of anygood anyways.
I just thought its cool to have it and to show of.
The media is too expensive too.

Been reading some good things about the 20a3p in CDFreaks. Like reliable scans at 18x & 20x, plus the same for burns.

Time to throw some new media in here.
Here's a scan of a MBI 8x +R DL burned @ 6x, scanned @ 4x.
Here's the scan (first burn BTW).
Interesting thing about these DLs is that they are Glossy, Hub Printable & supposedly Waterproof!
Here's the scan of the label. Don't know how well this will come out.
Thought y'all would appreciate a label comparison. Here's a typical matte finish, large hub DL, same label.
BTW, these discs are pricing out more than a $1.00 cheaper per disc than the printable Verb DLs, which aren't hub-printable, glossy nor waterproof.
ps, gm, I'm sending you a pm!
