I didn't stick in in the dishwasher but I wasn't all that gentle with it either.

Here's one photo of the disc after scrubbing on it with a wet Brawny paper towel. I believe the ink on the towel came from where I printed on non-printable portions of the disc.

Here's another view from a different angle.

The $60 question now is can I get reproducable, good burns?

I've tested both Imation AquaGuard and Taiyo Yuden WaterShield media in a dishwasher for durability. With a hot rinse cycle, a regular printable DVD loses its ink; but both the AquaGuard and WaterShield survive with little damage. A full 45-minute heavy-duty wash with detergent makes the AquaGuard look faded, wipes all the ink out of the WaterShield, and removes the actual printable coating from a regular printable disc. This test also messes up the dishwasher.

Thanks for visiting JoeRyan!!! :D Keep an eye on us every once in a while and in line as well. :)

@hobbit,
You might post a brief synopsis of the problems you went thru with your drive here and let them know when you officially get it fixed. Heck a thread dedicated to it might not be a bad idea either. I'm sure that other people have gone thru the same thing and that/this might be a quicker way to find a solution for people in the future. :)

Thanks for your last line JoeRyan! Without it I was going to run it through my dishwasher to test it. :O

BTW, did you use soap?

@greensman,

I will, when I finally figure out what the problem is. Looks like Newegg is going to come through and get me the new sata card Friday so I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

I have picked up some interesting news/inferences reading between the lines in my quest.

Hey all,

In my reading I've stumbled across a new version of SmartBurn for the Lite-On drives. You can get it here. It has a new feature, "Destroy Disc", but neither of my Lite-Ons (LH-20A1H, LH-20A1S) support it, bummer. :(

Looks like it renders the disc useless...I guess snapping the disc in two isn't easy enough to protect your data so they've made a program to do it for you.

I'm thinking that the "Destroy Disc" feature is to be similar to a feature supposedly found in PlexTools for the Plextor drives that wipes discs by re-burning them.

Has anyone found a drive that is supported yet? Maybe it's for the next generation of Lite-Ons.

@locoeng,

Snapping a disc in half might protect your data from the run of the mill person but the data is still there and can be recovered. Shoot, if OnTrack can do it commercially for harddrives what do you think "Big Brother" can do?

Actually, now that I think about it, it could be kind of simple to do, especially for data discs. Take the disc shards and reassemble them on a stable backing(jigsaw puzzle time), use a low speed drive (hack the speed servo), and use a simple sector editor(like the old-style Norton Disc Editor). I used to do it 20 yrs ago with damaged floppies.

hobbit112- The best way to render a disc useless ie: make the data eternally unretreivable is to physically destroy the disc ! either by shredding it into digital confetti !!! in a shredder { The most common approach!!!} or run it through a Disc destroyer a machine that has large Knurled rollers with many points /spikes on it that create multiple pits/ cavities on the read surface rendering the data& disc useless& unreadable Supposedly ? Myself were I in need of complete data security! I would lean towards the shredder or some other means of physiscal mayhem that completely obliterates the disc ! from incineration , microwaving( don't Try that at home) or soaking the disc in Acids ? or possibly gasoline ? or other Chemical treatments like Acetone? maybe basically anything that would disolve the disk or Liquify it into a soft tortia of plastic goo !!!or worse !!! ultimate the best data safety is to keep super important data to yourself in your own brain !!! Provided Your not Captured & tortured of Course !!!- For example being forced to listen to the Obscure CD- GREENSMAN SINGS THE BLUES!!!! at high volume whi;e being hung upside down and dipped in a large vat of HabanerO~ sauce comes to mind !!! and if you play the CD Backwards DR. Mc Coy from STAR TREK Keeps Repeating " He's Dead Jim"," He's Dead Jim", Over and Over!!! well That's it !Head Down Feetz Up & Beware of the Klingons LOL!!!

FeetZ Up ! Head Down !

Too true BigToxy, too true! Especially the part about greensman singing the blues, though I can do that one better, greensman singing a country western song! Play that one backwards and his wife comes back, his kids grow up fine and his dog doesn't die!

I agree the shredder is best, of which I do have & use one. The point I was making was that just snapping the disc in two (or four, etc) doesn't safeguard your data and that wiping the disc with a reburn might secure your data better. But, then again, if you get your hands on a 3 sheep burner who knows what you could recover?

I'm so confused. LOL. cmc NOT prodisc Verb...

GM, what was the reason again you burn on the samy and scan w/ the litey? I have a samy 203B in route from newegg as we speak. Just want to make sure DVDSCAN supports the samy.

@ChrisC586,

Who are you directing your question at? if @ me, I don't put limit my DLs.

@playr,

the 203b scans but not natively, you have to edit the registry. gm gave me the links to the instructions when I got mine. My 203b dosn't do jitter scans and I don't think it's as good a scanner as the lite-ons or benqs, but that's just my 2˘.

The LiteOn drives are more recognized and excepted as DVD scanners than any other drive except maybe the BENQ. :D

You'll have to make some "adjustments" to the Sammy for scanning but it'll do it just fine. ;)

Sorry wasn't putting that out as a question, seen some low and inconsistent scans on Verb DL and back a year or so ago when I was burning DL's found that a lot of inconsistencys and low scores were from burning to close to the edge of the disc. Just something for whoever to try.Chris
Edit Dang MS keyboard don't spell right!

I just got a new burner from newegg, a plextor 800A. It's working well so far. For DVD+R media, they recommended TY and Sony. I've still got a bunch of Sony MIJ 8x TYs, but I was interested in trying the 16x media. I went to Staples/Best Buy and could not find any Sony 16x MIJ (all Taiwan). Do you think the +R Sony MIT is any good, or should I just keep using Verbatim 16x?

On a positive note, I found an old 25 pack of Sony TYs at Staples and I bought it for $10. A little pricey but I could not resist.

tom,
I would google the Sony 16X DVD+R media and see what you get. I've read a few places and used some myself and I would consider it 2nd tier media. jm2c on that. :)

Verbatim and TY are still the way to go. I haven't found anything that is consistently better than those 2 medium. Trust me I've tried a lot of different brands and MID. :D Verbatim DVD+R 16X (MID: MCC 004) and Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 16X (MID: YUDEN000 T03) are trusted media and work well for most users. I'm sure that hobbit112 or cincyrob will comment. They've used much more TY DVD+R 16X than I have. ;)

You can also use DVD-R if you choose to do so. TY DVD-R 8X or 16X are pretty danged good. MID DVD-R 8X: TYG02 ; MID DVD-R 16X: TYG03. You can order those from supermediastore most of the time for cheap. :D

hth........

This will be a test for where the rubber meets the road. Samsung 203B vs. Lite-On LH-18A1P vs Lite-On LH-20A1S. I'm build a new system for a friend so for a few days I'll have access to all 3 drives. My question is what tests or apps can I use to benchmark these for ability to rip, burn, and do quality scans? I have Nero DVD Speed 4.7.7.5 will this suffice? I hope to report my findings here much as possible (or there's interest).

Cool deal Playr. :)

I have all of those drives but haven't made an "official" test with them. LOL. They all have their perspective "better" qualities but I don't think you will find any HUGE discrepancies in the 3.

I would use RipIt4Me, DVDFab HD Decrypter, and what ever your other choice is if any. As you know you can write/burn with Nero, IMGBURN, DVDFab has a burning engine too (pro version if I remember right). I think there are a couple of more but those are the ones that I would look at. Of course DVD Clone2 will do it but I don't know if you have those progies. :)

Good luck with your tests. :D
