Your 3.6Ghz on 1.45V was promising though, that was definitely stable was it?

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was.
I didn't actually check. My last chip did 3.6Ghz at 1.47v stable, so this should be good for it.

Nice OC there boozer. ;)
You know what's funny is you can talk savings all you want to but the cpu's aren't available yet are they?? ;) I'm still stuck with the 65nm tech. lol. An E6850 and Q6600 for the GM for now. ;) I'm sure they will serve for years to come. The only thing that I may need to get it some BIGGER ram. lol. 4GB(2GBx2)... BUT that will only come when it's absolutely necessary..... :P

I can add a Gecube HD4870 onto my parts order for this PC repair, effectively meaning it will only cost me £170 delivered, and I'm earning £40 for the pc job, is it worth it? I wouldn't have had any complaints about Gecube until the X1950XT AGP... Was that just a special case? After all, it should still be the reference design.

That statement got me thinking about the MSI I was looking at. It isn't a reference design! Isn't that unusual this early in the 4850's life?

The reference designs have just appeared. Sapphire have recently unveiled their 'toxic' version with a zalman cooler, not a particularly good one by the looks of things, but oh well...
Most people are fitting Accelero S1 rev 2s to their cards because they're cheap. Breaking one graphics card is enough for me thanks, I'll get an HR-03GT when I can afford one, need to buy the card itself yet!

Unsurprising.
Found a youtube video of the fan noise made by the 4870 at various speeds, and it sounds acceptable, primarily airflow noise, the only really present frequency is the blade frequency itself, which due to the squirrel cage blower is really high by the time the card's noise level is obnoxious. It seems free of the grinding noise made by the X1900 and HD3870 coolers, which is pleasing. I may not mind the card so much after all. I'm happy leaving it idling at 85ºC using the default fan speed (yes, the 4870 idles even hotter than the 4850) but will probably up it to around the 40-50 mark for games and hope that's sufficient.
What do you reckon? Is it worth getting a Gecube or should I spend the extra £11 on a Gigabyte instead? I figure the only warranty I get will be from ATI or the retailer, very few manufacturers will be interested.

That's funny! I went to look that up and when I opened Newegg, it was the first item on the computer hardware screen! LOL!! I see it's a 2 pipe, passive cooler? The MSI's is part of it's design with a fan in the middle.

I think a lot of video cards are like that. They can buy the card with the GPU and support chips and add what they want in terms of parts quality. MSI sells a reference 4850 card as well as well as their own design! I just though it unusual for a non reference card to be available so soon after the 4850 came out!

True, but the MSI has been out for two or three weeks. I was just surprised by the speed they got this one on the market!
A little news for all!
Read all about it! Nehalem has a new designation!

Makes sense, this is their 7th generation CPU and Intel has been using the "i" moniker for a while now.
Zoso, are you sure it's the memory? Try running memtest. I run mine ay 2.2v.

i got in set at min now, DRAM voltage in extreme tweeker is set at 210v (it was set in auto prior so maybe that was the problem)
and in hardware monitor it reads at 2.176v it is running at 1066MHz though so i will see if my machine reboots in the next day or so.

ZoSoIV,

I had the same thing and I raised the voltage to 2.11v. It turned out that the CPU voltage had to be raised .02v over what it was set at and that cured the problem. It would just crash for no apparent reason. A system re-set. No changes in the setup. It ran just fine after it rebooted. I just popped the side cover off and grabbed the memory sticks between my fingers. They are barely warm! Mine is also running at 1066, so I wouldn't worry too much about raising the voltage a little bit if you have to. Mine's been on for the last 36 hours so it's thoroughly warmed up! LOL!!

Lol - if i grab my memory, i get scalded and my hand instantly reflex-reacts away, i get a little red patch on my fingers... Then again, it uses the normal XMS2 heatspreader not the Dominator, has no fan directly cooling it, is tucked away at the back of my case with almost no airflow, and there are four sticks there not two, all bunched up together, all running at 2.16V, which guess what? My BIOS did for me! lol

Mine sit almost on top of the AF7-Pro fan. I have to use slots 2 and 4. I can use slots 1 and 3, but using the #1 slot puts the DIMM in between the frame and the fan blade! LOL!! It will work, but it makes me nervous! They sits right in the airstream for the CPU cooler, but I don't think it gets that hot to begin with. Like I said, it's barely warm to the touch, and I don't think it's the breeze that does it. I mean, I stuck my fingers right down to the base of the DIMMs, and I doubt that it even body temperature as you can barely feel any heat. I did that while running Prime95, and they didn't seem to get much hotter.
BTW, OxiMoron is a hell of a good game machine. The nVidia 6150 graphics are in a different league than the 6100's were. I had all the settings maxed out on the trial version of AOE III, and it really worked nice. Beautiful graphics! People can tell me all day long what a POS the AMD's are, and I'll just laugh at them, because unless you own one, you'll never understand just how good they really are! It does many things so much faster than my C2D. Encode times with DVDRB/CCE are generally under an hour, and that's with a bone stock 64x2 4800+. If it was my only machine I wouldn't be unhappy at all! The C2D may win the benchmark wars, but the I/O is so much quicker on the AMD in the real world. Clocks aren't everything! I'm so glad I bought? it!

You'd be surprise, my CPU fan may be big but it's more above the RAM than infront of it, and upping the speed of that from 600 to 1000rpm knocks a good 7-8 celsius off my RAM temps, even the slightest amount of air can have a big difference, just as long as there is some - the air is basically stagnant where my RAM is, hence the high temps (67ºC is the highest I've seen so far). It's the same principle I work on with my case, you don't need much air to cool something, as long as there is some, hence the 600rpm case fans...
While I'd agree about AMDs not being bad CPUs, they're not faster than Core 2 Duos. I've owned a 4200+ (and at a time had it overclocked to be as fast as a 4600) and compared to that my overclocked E4300 is much faster at doing everything. Bone stock they were kind of equal, but running at 3.15Ghz, the Intel is the chip I'd much sooner have in all environments.

your saying the AMD is faster than your E6750 running DVDRB/CCE?
it takes you longer than a hour with the C2D???? WOW, useing 3 passes(is what i have been oding here lately) it only takes me 62 mins.
