for vista display drivers what normally would caus bsods, jsut causes black screen for a few seconds, and say the driver stopped working,a nd what it does is it reverts to the standard vista drivers for the gfx (normally from windows update, so its up to date) and then allows you to repair the driver installation or remove etc.

What happens when the default driver doesn't work either then? You're screwed... Knowing windows update that'll easily happen at some point.

To be fair, you've probably had a better experience using an AMD card. Seems unusual to say this, but for Vista, AMD seem to have better drivers... :O
And on that note, it's curious how different cards respond to drivers in different ways, using the same driver (8.1 at the time) the X1900XT would routinely crash when in older Source engine games (CS:S and HL2 original, not the episodes or TF2) at 2560x1600, the HD3870 handled it fine.
The HD4870 can run Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the 3870 can't... weird.

You also have to take into account that you know a good deal about computers, especially when it comes down to what to do what not to do. The average person knows nothing about this stuff. They do dumb things with a computer that you or I wouldn't ever consider doing.
Vista is not what I would call user friendly. The addition of all those basically useless 20 or more icons in the control panel, just made a bad situation worse. Renaming some of them didn't help much either.
The point I'm trying to make is that I see a lot of screwed up Vista machines. I have no doubt that most of it is caused by the operator doing stupid things, yet I rarely ever see an XP machine in the same situation unless it's a virus problem.
BTW! I just tried every cure for someone putting in an Administrator password in a Dell GX260. Now we can't get into the Windows. The weird part is that it asks for an Administrator Password when you try to use a boot disk, and that's DOS, not Windows! I've never seen that before! There is no option for an Administrator password in the bios! Like I say, people do stupid things with computers! Any ideas?

Vista has command over everything in the PC, bootloader and everything. XP is a little more forgiving in that regard. For all its modern 'user friendly' features, Vista is if anything, easier to break. All that UAC for nothing! lol

We want Asus' piles of BIOS features, Gigabyte's awesome auto-overclocking, Asus' radical technology and Gigabyte's across the board build quality. Am I right? :P
This is epic news, poor old MSI will have a tough time ahead...

We've been through all of this before! The merger never happened! The deal was canceled! Right after that the 965P-DS3 motherboard came out and reversed GigaBytes fortunes! I even posted links on this! Doesn't anyone around here read links? It's very simple, the Government over there tried to force this merger after Foxxcon failed in a Takeover bid of GigaByte, and both wound up refusing to do it in the end, even though they had agreed to!

cincyrob,
Not your fault! The links on the net are getting to be a real problem as so many of them are out of date or broken. It causes many problems for anyone trying to do research on anything! It's going to get worse too as the broken or old links will continue to add up too!

I have used "ophcrack" to crack passwords on Vista with great success, here's the link, http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

I believe it also works on XP, however, I have not tried it.
Also, have you tried to just hitting "enter" on the password, there might not be a password?
Edit: for spelling

The problem is that it's looking for an Administrator PW in dos! It won't let me run anything but the XP CD! I can boot from the XP disk, but none of the tricks that work for user passwords work on the Admin PW!

So this won't help at all?(You said you can boot the XP disc, so this should work?): link
Somebody brought their Sony Vaio to me to fix the same problem and I used this guide. There was another livecd that I also used one other time that worked perfectly, but I forgot the name....probably wouldn't work for you though since you can't boot anything but the xp cd....

I've been straining my brain and I can't ever remember seeing a boot disk ask for an Administrator Password to continue with the boot! I didn't even know what it was for a second. In letters about half the size of the normal DOS letters. My brain went WTF? I'm begining to wonder if this might be a virus or something.
The lady that owns it said it was just there one night and they haven't been able to access the computer since. She swears that no one but she and her Husband have touched the computer. She runs the latest Kasperski, so a Virus would be questionable but not impossible! I just figured someone did it to be mean, but she says no!
What it's got me doing, is scratching my head!

Russ
