Thanks for the help.
This reminded me of another question I have been meaning to ask about editing. If you record several things on a RW Disk, can you erase only part of it? Say you have two movies on a disk, and decide you don?t want to keep one of them. Is there a way to erase just one, and record something else in it?s place. The only thing I have been able to do is completely erase the disk and start over. I can?t find an option to erase part of a disk.

AT FIRST MY DVDR04 USED TO BE ABLE TO RECORD ON MOST DVD+R/RW. I'VE HAD IT SINCE THEY FIRST CAME OUT...SO IT'S PROBABLY OVER A YEAR. AT FIRST I WOULD USE VERY GENERIC 2.4X...WHEN I STARTED USING MEMOREX 8X, IT NO LONGER WANTED GENERIC DVD'S...NOW EVERYTHING COMES OUT AS INVALID DISC...IT TAKES SOMETIME TO PREPARING BEFORE IT FINALLY SAYS INVALID...IT'S ABLE TO PLAY ONLY COMMERCIAL DVD'S, ANY VCD AND MP3'S...BUT DOES NOT WANT TO RECORD TO ANYTHING...I'VE TRIED EVERY FIRMWARE...HACK AND OFFICIAL....I THINK MY PROBLEMS BEGAN WHEN I DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED THE HACKED FIRMWARE...CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP...I'VE ALREADY DONE A SYSTEM RESTORE...AND TO THINK THAT I BOUGHT THIS RECORDER AT PREMIUM PRICE PLUS SHIPPING(WALMART SENT ME AN EMAIL WITH IT FOR $198...PAID A TOTAL OF LIKE $238)....THERE'S A DVD RECORDER AT SAMS CLUB WHERE YOU JUST ADD ANY IDE HARDDRIVE TO IT...DOES ANYBODY HAVE IT?

Alright -- I just got an ILO 04 (found it before I started looking for it) to replace the 05 that destroyed half my DVD+Rs before I destroyed IT.
Now -- two or three questions/issues I need info on (please):
1. I noticed last night while recording that the frame rate seemed to drop for about 10 mins. Once I was done recording, I "sourced" through back to S-video and it stopped. What was THAT???
2. My Cable/DVR remote is triggering the DVD recorder functions -- is anyone else having this happen? I know it's not a defect, I mean it's just gonna get REALLY irritating REALLY fast!
3. Can I not "name" a disc with this model??? I can name titles ON the disc but the 05 let me name the whole DVD too, which I liked.
4. Is the only way to get chapter stops on here to set it to automatically put them on between 5-30 mins? The 05 put stops on when you hit 'pause', which was great for cutting out commercials for TV shows, but the 04 isn't doing this. I just have a giant 22 minute file with no chapters.
OK that was four questions, but that's it for now (I think) -- thanks in advance for any info. The 04 is still 10,000 times better than the 05, I can assure you! I do wish I'd finalized a few things before I returned the 05 (the 04 can't read them), but since the 05 started "baddisc"-ing me on every other DVD I put in it, I probably wouldn't have saved much...

GoofusKAC,

Sometimes the recorder will get a little confused. In a previous thread, you mentioned running the firmware updates on the recorder. After all updates, it is a good idea to go to the setup screen and do a system reset/restore. This relieves any bugs that might be creeping around after the updates are complete.
2. My Cable/DVR remote is triggering the DVD recorder functions -- is anyone else having this happen? I know it's not a defect, I mean it's just gonna get REALLY irritating REALLY fast!
The ILO obviously shares some of the remote codes that your DVR has. No way around this one.
3. Can I not "name" a disc with this model??? I can name titles ON the disc but the 05 let me name the whole DVD too, which I liked.
The disc can not be named on the R04. The recorder gives it a generic name when it formats it.
4. Is the only way to get chapter stops on here to set it to automatically put them on between 5-30 mins? The 05 put stops on when you hit 'pause', which was great for cutting out commercials for TV shows, but the 04 isn't doing this. I just have a giant 22 minute file with no chapters.
Undocumented?..If you press the ?Edit? button while recording, it will insert a chapter mark at that point. This is whether you have the auto chapter on or off. If you have it placing chapters every 5 minutes, you will still get those along with any you insert with the edit button. The best bet is if you are watching while recording, turn off the auto chapter feature and just press the edit button to add them where you want. You might try this while playing back a recording to see if it will insert them during playback. The disc can not be finalized though, until after all editing is done.

(bold)Disk Finalizing Questions.(/bold)
Does the R04 have a auto finalize option? Most of the time when I go to finalize a disk it appears to already be finalized. It just says change disk.
I thought at first that the disks were bad, and some are, but some of them will play. Some will even play in another player. If they are finalized, the ilo done it on it?s on. My understanding is they should not play in another player if they are not finalized. Anyone else had this problem? Or have any idea why it will not let me finalize the disk.
Thanks

If you are using DVD+RW's, they do not need to be finalized. DVD+R's do. There are some rare occasions that a player will play an unfinalized +R disc but not very often.
Also, if you are using DVD+RW's, your player may not be completely compatable for playing them.
There is no auto-finalize option since there is no way the recorder could know if and when you want to close the disc.

As said above, on a DVD+RW, you can go in and edit out a recording so it doesn't show up on the menu but you can not reuse the space it occupied. Recording on a DVD is sequecial so you can't record between 2 (or more) other existing recordings. You will have to erase or re-initialize the RW disc before getting the full capacity of the disc back

I finally decided to try the firmware up date. I made five attempts, burning a new disk each time. No success. All I get is the data disk. I tried all the suggestions on Guitarman?s site, system restore, put disk in, press play button, turn power off and back on, but nothing worked. What should I do next?

well I am currently on my second unit. the first one failed like what the last person stated. This second one I took it out of the box and immediately patched it. It has been running for 6 months now with no issues. I think there is a quality problem with these units. it looks like some of them work, and some just dont. You buy one you seem to take a 50/50 chance. they are not all junk though, there are many that are happy with them.

I have an interesting problem for anyone who might have an answer.
I bought the 04, and 10 ILO +R disks 4 months ago. I havn't recorded anything in 3 months as I have been way to bussy to even watch TV let alone take time to transfer over anything to DVD. My problem now is that I was going to go back and edit my disks. Name the segments, finalize them, etc..... BUT none of my disks recognize now. I have something on all 10 disks, and have tried to view 5 of them only to have a very long preporation time, then a Failed message.
I havn't patched this machine, and really don't think it's necessary for what I use it for. Is there anything I can try that will make these disks viewable again?
These where recorded in 6 hour mode. If that helps. I know the sharpness isn't as good in that speed, but for what I was recording I didn't need it that sharp. Also these where my first attempts at recording, and I was just testing the machine out.

crsunlimi,
If I'm not mistaken, the R04 with earlier firmware had a problem with discs burned at 6hr mode and removed before finalizing. I would suggest upgrading to the latest firmware since this does also update the burner in the unit.
Your best bet is to always record and finalize the disc before removing it so there are no problems trying to read the disc later.
Also, if the recorder has been setting a while without use, the laser could be dusty and causing the problem. Try a DVD drive cleaner disc and try reading the disc again. If not, you may try taking the drive apart and GENTLY cleaning the laser with a q-tip and alcohol.

i think the problem most of us have is the drive not being abale to read the discs.. it is hard to finalize something when you cannot even burn to it! I took the ilo apart and cleaned the lense....gues what...it's working again...i could only lift the top of the drive enough...to clean it with like 10 q-tips...there is a lot of dust that gets inside the drive...it will not read generic media though...only memorex 8x...that is good enough for me...and to think i was ready to blow it up...with fireworks....

THANK YOU GUITARMAN! YOU ROCK!
