Most dvd Disc has it printed on the disc DVD+R or DVD-R.
I am not shure if the rcorder you have palys both or not my dvdhrdo04 only records on DVD+R DISCS. The dvdr04 series are built by LITE-ON and the DVDRO5 are bulit by cyberhome . If all else fails read the manual and it will tell you which Disc it will reord on.

I just bought an ILO R05 dvd recorder and love it. Most people are saying the disks recorded won't play on other machines. If you finalize them they will. Mine will play on both my RCA and JVC players as well as my Emerson recorder. The hand book to my ILO said it recorded on DVD+ but I found this not to be the case. Mine will only record on DVD-. Someone else said that the turner was mono. If you have have satellite then you don't have to use the tuner. Simply do the hook ups from behind using the RCA cables and you get excellent stereo.

I also read where someone wanted to copy dvds or tapes to dvd and couldn't because of Microvison. There is a simple solution to this. Best Buy sells a little box that is made by Go Video that goes between the player's video out put and the recorder's video input and it will let you copy anything. It cost around $100.00 but is well worth the price.

Hi Everyone,
The quote below was taken directly from the Walmart web-site. This may help clear up some of the confusion about the + - issue of the ilo R05. My guess is this only applies to the most recent releases that are in stores now.
Have a Good One!!!

"This DVD Recorder solves the confusing issue of multiple recording formats. How? Simply by recording on all of them! No more worrying if you've got the correct kind of disc handy. This easy-to-use DVD recorder works with Plus or Minus DVD formats,..."

Quick question-I believe this is the right place, as it deals with our DVR topics. IF I use a DVD-RW or DVDR+W,if these are written correctly(anyway, the ones you can use more than once!), on my DVR(Have a LIte-ON), if I want to use it again, do I have to erase it, like on my PC, or do I just record over the old movie? Also, would you finalize a rewritable?
Actually, another question, as my machine records VCD's also---are those just CD's, but somehow the materials get super-compressed? Thanks. Jim
PS, I really like the Lite-On...it will write and read anything I've thrown at it, so far. Jim

Hi soschief,
I will try to answer part of your questions. If someone else has a better explanation feel free to jump in.
Yes the Disc will have to be erased. Most Recorders call it Initialize.
You can also erase part of a disk if there is something you want to save, and re-use the remainder to record something else.
DVD-RW & DVD+RW Disc do not have to be Finalized. In fact most Recorders don't give you an option to Finalize the RW Disc. You can also Initialize Disc on a Computer. On the Computer it is called Format. I had a new RW disc that the DVD Recorder would not recognize. I formated it in the computer and then it worked.
I can not help with your question about VCD's. I am not familiar with this.
I Hope This Helps....motorcycl

im at a loss. i feel like i have been ripped off and have no where to go. i bought my HD04 unit in may of this year. for the first couple of months it worked fine. then last month it started having problems. keep in mind i have only recorded about 2 dozen dvds from it. first thing, it was reading empty DVD+R and DVD-R as cd AND dvd and recorded nothing for the first quarter of the disc and then was an invalid disc and refused to record or play. now it refuses to play regular dvds. i just downloaded the hack and fix and it wont even read that. on top of that, my cable was out yesterday and i was watching some of my recorded shows and some of them froze up and stopped playing in the middle of the show. then today i checked walmart.com and found out they arent selling the hd04 anymore just the basic (w/o hdd). i looked through this message board and found that a few with my model have had to get several replacements before getting satisfaction. i am very disappointed and feel cheated. just thought i would share that with all of you.

I have a question for anyone out there. Can you hook up a dvd recorder to your computer? I'm talking about the standard recorder not one made for computers.

I would imagine it would depend on how you mean "hook up". I have mine so it can feed into the computer and so it can receive from the computer. I also have a standalone VCR recorder/DVD player hooked in, also. This way, it is versatile, and it also gives me more options on what to do. It is done with RCA cables/jacks, and has worked quite well. I tried an S- video, but that cancels out the VCR potential, at least on my standalone. I do run an S-Video from the computer to my tv, allowing me to run the computer to the large screen TV. My wife got me a wireless mours and keyboard, so I can sit in my easy chair with everything! Pure hedonism!

Hi scpelino,
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Walmart has the HD04 back on the website again. I doubt if you will find one in any of the stores.

Good Luck....motorcycl

I'm wondering if someone out there can help me. I have a ILO R05 dvd recorder and can't figure out how to use the title menue. I've read the hand book and still can't put a title on a dvd. If anyone has the above machine and knows how to put a title on a dvd I would appreciate hearing.

My friend is from NJ and I am now in FLA

We both are musicians and purchased from Walmart the ilo DVDR 05

When recording off the air/cable, the music audio sounds like a warped record.

I tried the update patch from ilo and still has the problem.

Anyone else experience this...picture quality was fine...hmmm

We both are gonna return the unit and try something else.

I was just at Target and found an identical DVD Recorder called the Trutech DVD Recorder TT1620 for $99.00. Asside from some graphics on the front drive drawer and the name it looks identical to the ilo. The Trutech has the firewire mini connection on the front with the analog connection just as the ILO. The back has the same coaxial connections as that of the ILO and RCAs. The major difference is that there seems to be many more postive postings on the ilo than the Trutech. I do not know if that is because one is sold in Walmart and has larger audience than that of Target or if the shoppers at target are just not interested in that type of device. In any event, I think I am going to go with the ilo since there are so many postives. User "GSERVE" seems to be the be all to know all on this device so if I should run into problems I will ask him. Just a quick question GSERVE, what brand of media have you found to work the best with this device on both DVD R and DVD RW formats? Thanks,

Hi all. I'm sure this has been answered before, but I've done loads of surfing around to find the answer, with no results. It must be so easy that no one has had a problem with it before.

Does anyone out there use the ILO 05 using a direct TV DVR connection? My goal is to save all of the stuff I want to from the DVR recorder to CD, so I can free some space from the DVR. Reason being, I'm going out of town for a while and don't want my timed DVR recordings to overwrite previous ones while I'm gone. I've hooked it up just like my VCR was (VCR to TV, DVR to ILO), using coax cables. Before, I could press play on my VCR, and it would interrupt the TV broadcast and start playing what's in the VCR. I kind of am looking to do the same thing, except I'd like to be able to record off of the TV through the DVR, and onto the DVD05 recorder. Right now, I don't get any input from the DVD recorder no matter what I do. The manual says when the splash screen comes up you are ready to go, but for the life of me I can't even get the splash screen up. On the other hand, the green lights on the front of the recorder are very "pretty". Don't know if they are $100 pretty just yet.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

try hooking up with the RCA cables in the back like you would be hooking up a player to the recorder. Then you should be able to record from satellite. I have an ILO 05 and liked it at first. Now I think I have a piece of junk. It will constantly record on dvd-rs and then after I finalize the disc it doesn't recognize it. About every other one will work. I'm throwing away a lot of discs.

Thanks for the input. I think I've tried that, but will look at it again. I wish I had payed more attention while the satellite guys were making all the hookups. I just have wires going everywhere, but not sure what most of them are for.

Thanks!

Hi ajavu,
Your TV will need to be on one of the the inputs for the RCA jacks. Not channel three. It should be something like line one or line two or front or back, AV1 or AV2, something along this line. Put your TV on channel 2 and continue going down, you should be able to find one of the other inpuits.
Also you will need to use a RCA cable with red, white, and yellow ends and go from the out-put on the DVD to the in-put on the TV. If you want to record from the TV cable, satelite, antenna, etc., also hook up the coax cable like you would a VCR.

I hope this helps. Someone else might be able to explain it better. Also there are some earlier post about this.
