I would like information about ripping dvd's made on my ilo dvdrhd04 recorder with DVD Shrink. I can use DVD Decrypter then run it through Nero and export the file to a DVD+RW but thats a long way to get there. I know you ae going to ask why. Iam trying to get four episodes of my star trek collection in the lp mode on one DVD+R and I am just a little shy of having enough space on the disc. Thanks!

I had this problem with my first dvdr04, but you have to understand that these thigns are mass produced. I returned mine to Wal-Mart for a replacement, and have been using the second one for five months with no problems. I don't mean using it once a week or so, but every day. These problems you are decribing are not unusual, they are the same ones that I had with the first unit. The reason we (most on this forum) like the DVDR04 is because we can update the firmware allowing us to remove copy protection, and add the 3 hour recording mode. You are not going to be able to do this with another model. I do own another recorder made by Phillips that cost me $100.00 more than the ILO. The picture quality is not as good, and I actually prefer the ILO especially when it comes to ease of use. My suggestion is return your defective unit and get a replacement, and before you start using it update the firmware, that seems to make a difference.

Actually there is a firmware upgrade for the 05 at http://www.iloservice.com/downloads.htm however they do not list what this fixes or improves. I ran it anyway (there are two one for the system and one for the drive) but have not noticed anything different.

I can't find the thread where I saw this, but Travis said the ILODVD05 did a good goj with downloaded mpegs. I wish you could elaborate on this, like, can you just copy files to a disk, and it will play them? Does it have to be mpeg1's or 2's, or have you tried avi's?
It seemed like you were highly recommending this machine. It looks good to me, but I wondered how it would play DVD's created on a PCV? Thanks. Jim

Quote: I have an ILO DVDRHDO4 I have installed the firmware hack and everthing works but when I copy a encripted tape I get some jitter in the picture...
I ran all the updates and the hack for this 04 machine and I've been getting picture jitters/frame rate drops from all recorded line-in sources, PLUS when recording from the tuner.
No one else seems to have this problem, or perhaps they're not noticing it, but I resorted to re-running the WMEA1097-E20 (system and drive) update and now the jumpiness has stopped. I lost the macro/region hack and LP mode is gone, but since I can't find another 04 model to exchange this for I'd rather USE it than NOT -- besides, the EP and SLP modes on the 04 are far superior to other brands at the same speeds, so I'm happy for now. :-)
Oh, and the 05 still sucks your grandmother and should be avoided...

Has anyone compared the RH04 to any of the other recorders with a hard drive. Like the Pioneer 531, or the Panasonic EH50S.
Thanks for Listening. Have a Good One....motorcycl

I have the ILO dvd recorder and want it to record shows on HBO. The problem is I have a Cable box to recieive digital cable. I want to be able to do timer recording as well. Is there any way to do this? The channels for HBO are 200-212 and the units tuner doesn't recognize channels that high? I try auto scan and I only get the basic cable channels. Can I record anything that is on the TV? I bought this unit specifically so I can record movies and series that are on HBO. Kind of worthless if it won't work. Would it matter if I had a dish instead of cable? Anyone else having dificulty recording TV channels with the timer on high # channels?

You would have to do the same as with a VCR....hooking the cable to your cable box, with the Out-jack going to the ILO, having set the ILO at 4 or 4, like on the old VCR's. The cable box then controls your tuning. Problem is that you only can set it for one channel at a time, unless you can change it by hand, inbetween. There used to be a OneforAll Remote(8780, I believe) that solved this, but it's been discontinued. JIm

RF-out on the cable box to RF-in on the iLO will work, but it's the lowest-quality option. If your cable box has a composite (yellow RCA) output, use that with L/R audio to the iLO. Better still, if the cable box has an S-Video output, use that with L/R audio to the iLO.
Like the previous answer, consider your iLO burner to be the same as a VCR -- except it uses DVD media instead of VHS tapes.

I have had the RO4 for approximately 1 month now and so far I am pleased with this machine. The first thing I did was to download all updates and hacks. I have only had time to copy 3 vhs tapes to disk and the copies actually had improved pictures.
The only area I have a question about is the chapter function. When I copied the tapes a chapter was inserted only at the beginning of the session. I have chapter insertion set at 15 min. I recorded each by starting tape and pressing record button and kept an eye on the tape and approx. ending time of tape and simply stopped the recorder.
Is there something I am missing concerning chapters?

Is there any hacked firmware that can extend the recording time beyond its 2 hr recording limitation for DVDRHD04? The firmware installed was downloaded from ILO web version dated April 2005. Thanks

Pressing the "edit" button on the remote during recording will insert a chapter. This is only for the 04 models, as the 05 models (NOW DISCONTINUED) auto insert chapters every time you pause/unpause.

I tried recording something on a cd-rw(the disc that actually came with the recorder) and when I went to play the recording it says it is a data disc and won't play. I have recorded programs on this disc many times with no problem, whether timer recorded or manual. I recently moved this recorder to a different TV and have not done a recording since. I am wondering if my connection is not correct. I am getting channels through the tuner in the recorder though. Please help!

You may want to try doing some things that wouldn[t ordinarily seem to matter. I can best explain by example:
I had a old Sanyo DVD/VCR combo that would play about anything I could burn(DVD), but son wanted it for college. Used that as an excuse to by a new Samsung unit, similar, but new and with better gadgetry. Lo and behold, it wold only play about half my DVD's (PC-burned ones), and I couldn't see what was the difference---both playable and not were mixed in terms of quality, brand, etc. On this forum one time, someone commented that recording speed may effect. So, I burned one this weekend at "2" instead of "max", and it played like a charm, first time.
Thus, try erasing or not erasing first, opposite of whichever isn't working now, try different speed, etc. Good luck. Jim

I Have the R04. My connections are as follows: digital cable box > Sony all in one home theater (dvd-vcr)> DVDR04 > TV, all with rca cables. Now my problem is if I turn off the DVDR04 I can no longer watch TV,(No problem just leave it on, right) well after a while a screensaver comes on, (a little annoying). My digital cable remote also controls functions on my DVDR04. (real annoying). So, is there a way to get rid of the screensaver or another way to hook up to where the R04 doesn't have to be on to watch TV? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jimmy

I would leave your RCA cables as-is, assuming you have your sequence set up as you like it. I would supplement it with standard cable-TC cables, following the same path, as that will carry signal even when intervening ccomponents may be turned off. Some say the quality of cable vs RCA cables is notable, but I've never found that---given you have a decent cable system comint in. Jim

I purchased the DVDRHD04 last week and it is working just fine but takes getting used to its operation since I also own a Sony gx300. I visited this forum to see what known problems are with the unit. I saw the Gtrman site and the hacks available. I am interested in the firmware that enables the LP 3 hr record mode. I followed the instructions written by mr wizard but in step 06) the status window displays: < error: could not find macrovision hex string >
I tried to download again on a different computer and get the same message. Am I doing something wrong or has anyone encountered the same problem..help
also is there any other firmware updates that i should download..
thanks

I seem to be having the opposite problems as others. After I record a disc and finalize it, I can not play it in my ILO DVD R04 recorder/player. I can play it in other machines. None of the dics that I record work on the ILO during playback. HMMMMMMM. Help if you can.

Please message me as fast as you can. I bought the ILO DVD recorder. When I put in a DVD-R it says format yes or no, I put yes because if I put no it would open the CD box. When I put yes it takes really long until it gets to %100. Then when it gets there it says that is a unknown CD and it would freeze my ILO, it would let me go to setup and display, but it won't open or turn off. Please tell me how to fix this problem as fast as you can.
Thank you
