@bigtoxy
nicely stated...i would elaborate when it comes to Taiyo Yuden media, but you pretty much summed it ALL up~ :)
personally, i have 6 burners...as per TY media:
4x DVD-R burn @ 4x
8x dvd-r/dvd+r burn @8x
16x DVD-R (the 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s will be out shortly POSSIBLY by X-mas time or next year here in the U.S. :)) burn @8x...keeping the burn @8x on 16x media is just MY preference, while on quality TY media, you COULD opt to go higher, but, from personal experience/testing...i found the best scans to be @8x, that's just what MY own setup likes :)
TY 4 Life~ :) as per my sig. have a good one all~
docTY~
Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Hi Team - aabbccdd, bigtoxy69
Thanks for all your feedback ... since I am trying to learn more, can you explain ... how can the Taiyo 4X, 8X, 16X all be the same QUALITY or MATERIAL ... yet are RATED for different burns speeds ... and I believe when I run the BenQ QSuite test they do show different Graphs and also the program tells me what is the max speed they recommend to burn it at!?!?!?
THANK YOU ALL as always!

gonwk- I'm sure one of our afterdawn experts can explain it better but If I understand right its something like this ! The speed rating of optical/ recordable media is certified to a ceratin speed ! in other words although you can burn Taiyo Yuden 4 X disc at 8X with certain burners Taiyo Yuden only certifies that it will record data/video or whatever up to it's 4X rating Kind of like having a Car that can go 150MPH !!! but your tires are only rated to speeds of 100MPH ! You still have the option of 150MPH but Your safety margin is better at 100MPH ! That being said you can burn some quaity media at Higher than rated speed = Overspeeding or at lower than rated speed or at the rated speed ! it's your choice Although many afterdawn.com members burn @ 4x as a best compromise between quality of burn & time it takes too burn disc! Hope this explains it somewhat ! This is they way I understand it and if I am not correct apologies to you and everyone ! Peace & happy Burning gonwk!

BIGTOY thats perfect
gonwk this is what sets Taiyo Yuden media apart from most media
"Authentic Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media, made to the highest standards. Highest quality, suitable for duplication and public distribution. Features archival quality AZO metal dye for today's longest archival playback capabilities.
and this is true for ALL there media being 4x 8x or 16x ,so when backing up dvds your just better off at a slower rate to be on the safe side ,less read errors ,freezing.skipping etc. so remember 4x rated keep at 4x, 8x rated go 4x,6x even 8x if your getting good Graphs doing it and 16x media keep at 8x max. hope this helps

I live in the USA and have heard about Taiyo Yuden media but have never seen it in retail stores.. Do you guys buy it on line? E-Bay? Did a search on Ebay for it and it seems a bit expensive.. I have been thru the cheap media route and it is just not worth it to buy crap.. But is this any better than Verbs or Sony?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, it is just that I have never heard or seen this media out there before.
Thanks,

CRAIGERR- The easy way to find it in stores is to do the following ! wait for Bestbuy to put FUJI DVD-R or DVD+R media on sale ! They do this like every other week or so ! go there and go to the blank media section of the Store ! Find the Fuji's usually 8X speed ! Then look at the spindles /50/100 pks. Look by the barcode area /proof of purchase symbol then look for the words MADE IN Japan! If you see MADE IN Japan - Buy the media Fuji's = taiyo yuden's Also If you can find them SONY DVD media If Made In japan is also Taiyo yudens ! Alternatively you could just order some taiyo yudens from SUPERMEDIASTORE.COM or Meritline.com or rima.com as these online retailers are highly regarded by the afterdawn community ! Hope this helps you out CRAIGERR! good luck happy holidays & burn Kado Burn!

HOLY CRAP!! Thanks BIGTOXY69, I just switched my media from OFFICE MAX and HP %(^*)#$# CRAP to Sony's DVDr+'s and out of the last 10 burns I have had not a single coaster considering I had at least 4 out of 10 with the last batch of the junk media I bought.(I have no idea what I am going to do with 75 OFFICE MAX DVDr+'s.. I guess just chalk it up to experience and chuck them!) I have a thread going in the advanced forum about crap discs.. I was told to try the Sonys instead, so I went to Best Buy and picked up a spindle of Sony's..And like you said they are :
Manufacturer : YUDEN000 T02
Code : -
Disc Type : DVD+R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : -
Capacity : 4.38 GB
4700375040 Bytes
The same Manufacturer of the Taiyo Yuden media!!!
I have been using the Taiyo Yuden media all along and I did not even know it!!!
Dang, I feel like I am in the Wizard of Oz! :^)
I just went out and bought 4 50 spindle packs of Verbs tonight at Office Max so I think I will be all set for a while but thanks for your advice about the SONY and Fuji media!! I will keep that in mind when I start running low again.
Happy Holidays to you all and to all a good night!!

you wont find the fujifilm DVD-R format that are Made In japan just the DVD+R 8x format so look for them. and the Verbatims are just as good as the Taiyo Yudens
and NEVER buy media off e-bay lol

CRAIGERR- Verbatim is also excellent so you have done well young Jedi! LOL! A general rule you may want to follow is to look as we said previously for media that is MIJ = Made in Japan and generalizing again it tends to be better quality than Taiwan made media ! There are a couple exceptions to this rule ! Verbatims are Mainly made in Taiwan And are excellent ! Ritek Media is also made in taiwan and seems to have a good reputation and are sometimes slightly less expensive than Taiyo Yuden Or VERBATIMS Ritek also OEM's DVD Media for OFFICEDEPOT - Not Officemax & you can often find that on sale too! also some maxell media is Also OEM'ed by ritek as well ! I have bought a quantity of ritek / Maxell media but have'nt gotten to them yet ! but from what I understand Riteks are a viable 3rd option to Verbatim & Taiyo Yudens ! but as long as your happy with Taiyo yudens & verbatims You'll get no argument from me ! hope you enjoy your disc & newfound hobby Good Luck & Happy Burning!

ARRGGHHHH Riddle me this Batman.. I am all ready to hang around while I try these new verbatims.. I decide to burn some DATA and back up my hard drive before I try the movie thang.. I put the Verbatim DVD+R into DVD Rom and open Nero and dump like 3 gig of hard drive back up data onto the Verb.. something I have done tons of times with Nero and have burned the sony=ty at 8 X .. that is up to what my burner will support 8X..I go to adjust the speed for the burn and the highest it will go is 2.4 GRRRRRRRRR so I am like WTF!!! So I put in the Verbatim DVD-R that says right on the disk that it is certified 16X I check the speed and it shows I have a choice between 2.4X and 4X.. No Higher... Frustrated I abort the DATA and try the movie back up thing.. I already have a movie ripped to HDD that I own and tried to back up with the OFFICE MAX Crap brand and failed so I direct Clone DVD2 to the folder select 8X put the Verbatim DVD+R back in and hit burn..It burns the back up in 12 minutes,at 8X ...Perfect.. I have gone further down the pack and they all will burn a data disk with Nero at only 2.4X.. Granted, I still have the SonyDVD+Rs I can use for DATA by WTF??? Are some machines just more compatible with different brands than others?? This is the first time I have ever had a limitation on speed especially when it is a certified 16X disc.. BTW the amout I put on the disc made no difference.. 5 meg or 3 gig still only burns data at 2.4X... one thang after another it seems..

very interesting sig. pic. u got there CRAIG~ :) is that a "beaverpose" i c there? LOL or am i just imagining things this early in the morning?
anyways, EXACTLY as Induna above me suggested, it's THE FIRMWARE~! :)
firmware teaches your drive to recognize/read/write/etc. to the newer higher speed rated discs, and in YOUR case, with it being the 16x Verbatims, i am almost 100% sure that your drive can NOT currently recognize/detect this "newer/faster rated" media~ hence, why you are restricted to burning at such a SLOWWWWWWWw speed...2.4x is NOT acceptable to ME PERSONALLY on single layer discs, on DVD+R DLs, that's a diff. story, but on 4.7gb Verbs or Taiyo Yudens, definitely NOT~! :P
as he mentioned, need the make and model number of your drive...you need to update the firmware for you to be able to burn faster~ :)

Thanks for the reply, sig. pic is "alien birth pose"..hope it is not graphic enuff to get me banned here.. Did not even think about that at the time..
Now I suppose a firmware upgrade for my Sony DVD RW DRU-700A VVY03
would not hurt but this is my quandry..
I can burn up to 8X using this DVD ROM.. When I insert a Sony DVD +R I can burn 8X as data using Nero.
When I insert a new 16X Verb into the Sony DVD Rom it could burn (it gives me the option) 8x in the program Clone DVD2 although I never burn above 4X.. (except for one time to try these verbs out.)
But when I use Nero to burn a data disc , Using the 16X Verbs , nero limits me to only 2.4X ?
You are saying that either my Sony or Nero is looking at these new 16X Verbs and limiting me to 2.4 unless I do a Firmware upgrade , when I have no problem burning a Sony / TY 8X data disc at 8X?
The type of media you use, can rule how fast a burn you can make? I could see if I was trying to burn a data disc at 16X or even 8X and then crying about it when it wont, but to have this 16X media tell me that I can't burn over 2.4X as data with a DVD+R and 4X on a DVD-R kinda leaves a fowl taste in my mouth . And I bought 200 of these "great" blank discs.. GRRRRRR
And then to top it off , the first disc I use to back up a movie at 4X , Clone DVD2 spits it out and tells me it is unable to do it because of bad media..(I put in another disc from same spindle and it burned just fine)
If these are the problems right out of the cakebox, I can tell you I am not impressed with the Verbatim media at all.
Craig

@ Craig,
sometimes you will have a conflict w/ Sony drives w/ certain types of media, but, in your case, i REALLY think that the most recent firmware upgrade WILL do you some good...i have the next model up from you, the Sony dru-710a, when i first purchased the drive (upon it's release here in the U.S.), yes i paid a pretty penny and was disappointed w/ it's ability due to the lack of firmware to REALLY utilize the drive to it's full potential, SEVERAL revisions later, now i am very pleased with the drive...
give this a try and see if there is any improvement using those 16x Verbs...are they DVD-R or DVD+R, just out of curiousity?
download the LATEST from Sony here:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#700
it will be the VY08, you said you have the VY03, this is SEVERAL revisions behind and i believe this is what is limiting your data speed burns.
my Sony happens to LOVE Verbatim media, and MOST Liteon drives do...they can AND will burn @ rated speed assuming you have the most recent firmware...give it a try and let me know, we can take it from there IF you are still having speed issues...also, MAKE SURE your "DMA" mode is set to ON, this could also be a cause for slow burn speeds if your system reverted back to PIO mode~ :)
go here to check. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf
good luck

That did the trick Kivory666.. I just burned 4.1 gig of pics from hard drive in 8 minutes at 8X.. It finished I put the disc back in to check it AnyDVD popped up to show there was at least something on the disc and then the PC crashed.. HARD ... Hehehe probably from lack of recsources, it just all of a sudden rebooted on its own.. This is only a 1.2 GIG cpu and 384 meg ram.. But it did work great I must admit..(will back off on the speed when burning all those pics though!! he he) I hope this solves any issues with DVD clone2 finding "bad media".. coulda just been a dvd rom issue.. this firmware is supposed to improve all that .So maybe it will work there as well. Before I upgraded firmware I looked around and on the cdfreaks forum it was suggested that liteon and sony had the same firmware since the Verb discs were having the same "bugs" with the same 8X and 16X verbs.. would not write above a certain speed. and they were also complainin about Sony not upgrading their firmware.. VVY03 .. Umm the thread was old.. as old as my firmware. :o) now I have VVY08
and all seems fine!!! Sigh now I have nothin' to complain about... till next time. ;^} he he Thanks so much for the support, this forum is a life saver!!!

Bottom Line: What is the top 3 currently available DVD+R's to burn. I have backed up many many many discs on HP, Memorex, and Imation media and wish I had seen this forum prior to all my hard work. Luckily they all work perfectly, but now my sister wants a copy of my collection and I want to start all over while giving her the "bad CMC" discs. I want to make a purchase soon and would appreciate your honest opinion on what DVD+R discs I should get. I AM TRUSTING YOU GUYS/GALS! lol

Thanks Creaky, you're the best. After posting I found some other similar responses using the "Search" sorry for asking the same question thats been answered a million times, but I don't want to waste my time buring movies only to sit here and do it all over again. With that out of the way.
I have another question that I couldn't seem to find the answer to. Say I have a back up on CMC media. If I were to transfer the files from the CMC media back to my harddrive and copy it onto the Taiyo Yudens, will the effect of crap be transferred as well or will I have a crisp long lasting file, as if I had taken it from an original?
Last but not least is this a good deal or should I be leary of id codes of the Taiyo Yudens or are all of them the "Cream of the crop" so to speak? http://www.yesbuy.net/taiyo-yuden-dvd-r-8x1.html The link may not work but it's at yesbuy.net and its 100 or 200pk of TY 8x DVD+R discs

Eric78DX ,your better off sticking with supermediastore.com or meritline.com both top notch dealers of Taiyo Yudens and the prices are less expensive on either site than the site you listed.heres a link

to re-rip your dvds the best tool is probably dvd decrypter ,ISO read ISO write as long as there arent to many read errors dvd decrypter should be able to handle the task

I have been reading these messages with great interest because I?ve been experiencing problems with my new Plextor 716A (latest firmware) and Memorex DVD+R DL media. I bought two 15-packs from Office Max and so far, I?ve had six coasters out of 15 burns. I?ve used Nero, Roxio, and Apollo to do my burns. No matter if at 2.4x or 4x, my failure rate is still most unacceptable.
Upon running DVD Identifier 4.20, I see that the Memorex media is Ritek. I certainly hope that by switching to Verbatim, Fuji/TY, etc., I can avoid further heartaches and frustration.
Now for the ?burning? question: I received a 25-pack of Dynex DVD+R 8x as a birthday gift. They have not been opened, but I see on the package, they were made in Taiwan. What brand are these actually? If they're garbage DVDs, I'll go back to BestBuy after Christmas and exchange them for the good stuff. Thanks for all the insight, folks!
