@CRAIGERR,
The reason I back up my movies is simple, Small children, a mini-van DVD player(eater) don't play too well together, for some reason the disks get scratched up after being in the vehicle, so instead of spending $15-20 on movies which get chewed up quickly, I keep the originals in the house and use the back ups on the road. Destroying a 30˘ disk is less discouraging than losing a $15 one, just my two cents worth. However, the majority of the Blank DVD's I buy are for home movies which are sent to various relatives throughout the counrty. Grandparents and Greatgrandparents can't travel 800 miles to see the kids sing in the church everyother weekend. Each performance or event generates 10-12 copies, so that equates to about 50 disks a month at times around the end of school and graduations, Easter and Christmas pageants.

aabbccdd,
I did, and in fact that is one reason I bought a DL drive. As of the date of the purchase I was looking at very high prices (locally) for DL media (3 for $20, 25 for $80), and I decided against them for a couple reasons. First, if I backup for my kids or mother, or whatever... it will be free. So that is more money out of my pocket, since I hate giving people junk... which brings me to reason 2. Secondly, all the freeware i have used so far (I had this burner for 2 weeks now, so I am new... be gentle) has proven to be utter junk. The quality of the burns is pitiful. It is very easy to see compression artifacts, and simple poor quality (similar to using the old VHS on SLP). I saw this was the best program and mentioned it to my wife. She bought it for me for fathers day. I thought it was a great gift and very thoughtful... and it is something I will likely use for years to come, so it will pay for itself in due time.
***Edit*** Oh yeah, the other thing is, I am hoping to get rid of the screen freeze that occurs on DL discs. My understanding is it is due to the reader crossing layers. Even with my high end DVD player I get freeze. I am ripping my Pirates of the Carribean right now, and will see if I can eliminate the screen freeze using high quality DVD-5 backups. Boy will my friends be amazed ;)

sandt38, what drive(burner) are you using? (try a Plextor) per my sig. and i would use Verbatim DL blanks burning at 4x max. to solve your problem with the freezing

aabbccdd,
I have not burned any DLs yet. I bought a pack and was learning how to burn on cheap discs before I did so I didn't waste one. My drive in an Optiarc (not sure if you know it, they are a new company formed by a merger of Sony Optical and NEC). As far as freeze, it happens even in store bought movies. You know, sometimes you see a very slight pause between chapters. I don't mean a total freeze (which I have gotten using the freeware actually).
After I bought the computer (with the integral burner) I saw all the info on Plextors though. I looked at them at Best buy and was amazed at the price of the stand-alone units. With all the ravings about them here I felt for sure they were going to be expensive units, but they are reasonable. Less then the Lightscribes. I might pick one up in the near future.

I understand your point blivetNC.. And how about paying all that money for XBOX 360 games and then finding out your kids are using them as frisbees..or just too dang lazy to put them in the jewel case before they put another one in the machine.
Ever tape a baseball game without the expressed written consent of the Commisioner of Baseball?
Haveya ever eaten a grape at the grocery store that you did not pay for?
How bout waiting till movies come on HBO,Cinemax,Showtime and copying them using your tabletop DVD burner? (so you can timeshift and watch them at a later date , of course.)
Ever take that tag off your mattress?
Didja ever borrow someones record (you know that big plastic thing with lines all over it)and tape it to a CASSETTE (you know that plastic cartrige that had magnetic tape wrapped around 2 wheels in it )so you did not have to buy it? Oh I know it just might take the crack smoke out of the lungs of these "starving" artists, but considering the price of a CD has never gone down since being introduced, someone is certainly makin a profit.
The point is , I use Verbs and Sony's to put all my MP3s on, after I download them.

cincyrob:
They have gotten a little off the beaten path. I found a couple of deals but haven't checked all of the makers recently.
B.B. Fuji 8x DVD+-R 100/$29.99
CompUSA TDK 16x DVD+-R 50/$14.99
Office Depot DVD+-R 50/$7.99
Sam's Club Verbatim 16x DVD+-R 100/$36.34
Sony DVD+R 75/$25.73
The only ones I have checked in the past are the Sam's discs: the Verbs were MIT while most of the Sonys were MIJ's. Good luck and let us know if you find any deals out there. You might try www.allmediaoutlet.com too, they have had some good deals in the past.

edit: Added indentity code for Sony's and Verb's in next post.

It was late last night and I made a mistake or two. I intended to identify the Verbs as MCC-003 and the Sonys as YUDEN000-T02. Sorry about the confusion on the Verbs as MIJ's. The Verbs are 8x as well, man I need to sleep more so these things don't happen again. Thanks for noticing the mistake and thanks to Creaky for all the good info. BTW, the Verbs I purchased at Sam's that code as MCC-003 say Mitsubishi Chem. Corp. on the box. Again sorry about the bad info. Info fixed and again let us know about the good deals as you find them. I was also lucky enough to get the Sonys 25 and 50 pack as MIJ. Luck of the pick at Sam's I guess. I also have to be on the same page as blivetNC on the backup thing, I have a 4 and 6 year old and they can scratch a disc just by looking at it. 35 cents is way better than 15 dollars the way I look at it.

There are a couple of telltale signs about the 75-pack of Sony MIJ at Sam's. At least here in Nashville, I've found it to be so; that the ones you want to look for to code out as TY are (a)1x-8x, (b)MIJ, and (c)a white hex shaped packing ring at the top of the pack. With all three conditions being so, I've always gotten TY coded discs. It never hurts to look around. I've even found at BB, the stacks galore of Sony discs on sale most of the time yield MIT, but plunder through the stacks and you'll likely fish out a few MIJ. A great way to see quickly is the 1x-8x on the side of the package. The 1x-16x, I've always found to be MIT.
Verbs - well what can I say? I did find one pack MIT on sale for $9.99/50, but they did code out as MCC. It was an open box sale at BB and there were only 49 actually in the pack. I snapped them up and kept looking over my shoulder for security. ;-)

Memorex (8x) RITEKG05
They have been using Ritek G05 for awhile now.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
