HOPE NO ONE OBJECTS TO ME ASKING FOR SOME BASIC ADVICE WITH REGARDS TO DVD-REBUILDER...
BACKGROUND:
I HAVE BEEN BACKING UP MY MOVIES USING DECRYPTER AND SHRINK AND HAVE NOT HAD ONE PROBLEM AT ALL. THEY HAVE BEEN EASY TO USE PROGRAMS AND I HAVE CREATED RESPECTABLE COPIES. THE MORE I HAVE USED SHRINK, THE MORE I HAVE STARTED TO WONDER IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE OUT THERE IN THE WORLD OF FREEWARE THAT WAS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER. I STARTED TO DO A LITTLE READING ON DVD-REBUILDER AND DVD-REMAKE AND STARTED TO GET A LITTLE OVERWHELMED. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE HIGH QUALITY BACK UPS OF A FULL DVD-9 FORMATED MOVIE ONTO A DVD-5. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IT SOUNDS LIKE REBUILD WILL DO THIS. IS THIS TRUE? AND IN ORDER TO USE REBUILD DO I HAVE TO BUY CCE?(FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IT SOUNDS LIKE TH TRIAL VERSION IS NOT WORTH IT) OR COULD I USE DECRYPTER WITH REBUILDER INSTEAD. I APPRECIATE ANY HELP THANKS TO WHOEVER RESPONDS
I am sorry about the caps

Go to www.dvd-rb.com and download the installer. It will come with the HC encoder and the QuEnc encoder (both freeware). Try those first.
I would disagree with you, though, regarding the CCE Basic encoder. I have no relationship with the company and have no "dog in the fight" -- but my experiences have been that CCE makes the best encoder on the planet. Hands down. They occasionally get "under my skin" with their constant changing of configuration settings... but it's hard to deny their quality and speed.
I would warn you, though, that while the quality you get with an encoder is truly superior, the trade-off is time. Rebuilding a full DVD can take in the neighborhood of 3 hours, and even longer on some heavy content DVDs and slower computers.

Dobbs:
Thank you for the response. Regarding CCE, I was refering to using the trial version. It sounds like one should bypass the trial all together and go straight to CCE Basic. Money is kind of a pinch for me so that is why I hadn't searched anywhere else prior. Also my success with Shrink and Decrypter have been good, but now I am at a point where I don't want to have to loose disc integrity in order to keep quality(something I have had to do with Shrink at times).
How much difference is there between HC&QuEnc and CCE Basic. I know you said that CCE is the best but are the other two that far behind? Or rather how do the other two compare to the encoder in Shrink? Thanks again

HC is probably as close as you'll get to CCE anywhere (free or not) -- but it doesn't quite match up to it in my opinion. I think you'll still see a significant difference on challenging encodes, though.

The trial version of CCE Basic is useless but the purchased version is excellent. As jdobbs has stated if you want to get your feet wet and try RB then there are some free compatible transcoders and encoders that do a pretty good job. Try the Rockas installer version and you won't even have to fret with setup. You can download it from here.

BTW, using all caps is against forum rules because it means you're shouting.

Lots of capability. Excellent software. Solid as a rock. But there are limits to what you can do with within-the-compressed-domain transcoding.

I use Shrink to explore the contents of a DVD with and somethimes I use it to pre edit and rip with, but I haven't used it to backup a DVD with since Beta testing stopped. That being said, it's as good as most commercial transcoders are, it's free, and the results are not unpleasing on discs that require a minimal amount of compression. But if you want to play with the dogs then you'll have to stop running with the puppies.
Follow the link I left and experiment a bit. Although it takes longer to encode than it does to transcode (Shrink is rather slows for a transcoder)the results are better and the process is automated enough so that you can do a couple of DVD's overnight while you're sleeping using batch processing. You only have to be there for the burn.

I tried to backup Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2003) with 0.91Pro movie only, I ripped with Decrypter 3.5.4.0. As soon as I hit Backup DVD I got runtime error 5 "invalid procedure or argument". I changed back to 0.90Pro and Rebuilder had no problem.

Hmm... someone else mentioned another DVD that hit that error. I'll pick that DVD up today and find out what happened. That's the problem with making changes -- there's always the chance you have an unplanned effect somewhere else.
Was it the NTSC version that caused it?

I'm confused. I went out and bought Texas Chainsaw Massacre just so I could repeat this error. I ran it on my video computer and it finished the PREPARE without incident. Could you tell me whether you have any special settings selected in DVD Decrypter? Was it ISO Mode or File Mode? How about in DVD-RB? I'd sure like to clear this up.

Which encoder did you use? And if its a CCE variant, did you set the correct file path for the correct version of CCE?

Well I've run it through about every scenario I can think of. With 3 different versions of CCE, Movie Only, No Compression, Decrypted with and without structure protection, and in File and ISO mode. I couldn't get an error.

HC is an excellent encoder, although slower than CCE. The difference between DVD-RB and most other products is that it uses actual MPEG-2 encoders (just like the authoring house did originally) to do the transformation of the DVD and then reauthors it. Most DVD copying software use something called "within-the-compressed-domain" transcoding. They take the original, modify some parameters, and rewrite. While that works, and it fits, it can miss a lot of important considerations and sacrifice quality. Even a marginal encoder can usually produce better quality than transcoders on challenging sources.
But there is a cost for the additional quality. Analyzing the source, redistributing the bits, and reencoding takes longer than transcoding. This is largely due to the fact that MPEG uses a concept called an asymmetric codec. The majority of the work is done on the encoding side in order to reduce the need for processor power on playback.

Hi, could someone please answer to this?
I have a question about setting DVD-RB, AVS Options! I have an Athlon XP 2600+ and always checked AudioDub(BlankClip())....so is that right or should I uncheck it? Does AudioDub(BlankClip()) have an influence on quality, using CCE SP 2.66 ?

@jerry77
BlankClip() has no influence on quality at all. It is there as a way to circumvent a bug that exists on some versions of CCE when used with Athlon processors related to audio processing. As is true with all DVD-RB parameters, it is usually best to just leave it set to its default state.

Could you send you REBUILDER.INI file to dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com so I can make sure my setup is exactly the same as yours?
Thanks.

I was backing up the Woodsman and I got a run-time error: Path/file name error in Rebuilder 0.92. I am using CCE Basic 2.70, AVISynth 2.5, and DVD Decrypter 3.5.4. This is the first time I tried to use RB 0.92. It was a batch encode with 4 movies and the first 3 came out fine.
