What is the size of the original? Are you attempting movie-only or regular backup?

hey i just got a little question. Im using cce basic 2.67 and am going 2 upgrade to the newest verison. would there be a quality difference in the picture when i upgrade versions of cce. Like say if someone was using 2.67 verson of CCE SP and some one else was using cce 2.7 sp would the 2.7 one have better quality or is there just random bug fixes with the new one also it probably would have faster speed right??

I'm sure people here will be interested in this unless they already know. CCE Basic is up to 2.70.01.02. Probably already widely known, but I just found out.

Hello everybody. I'm new here. I have been reading all your posts and I followed instructions on installing DVD REbuilder and Cinema Craft Encoder. I used DVD Decrypter to decrypt the movie to my HD. Then I opened DVD-Rb and configured according to instructions I found on this forums. After all is set I hit the "Backup DVD" button. DVD-Rb stars working. It does the Phase I and when it goes to start the phase II it gives me the following error "ERROR: File v01000000001001 shows completed, but no .m2v file exists. Aborted"
I'm using Cinema Craft Encoder SP 2.50.01.00 / DVD Rebuilder v0.84 and Avisinth 2.5.5.0
Would anyone be so kind as to help me with this problem?

Could you please look into something for me in the REBUILDER.INF file (found in the D2VAVS directory within the working path)? You can use wordpad or notepad to open it. Look for a heading called "[V01000000001001]", a few lines beneath it there will be a line that starts with "Frames=" (there are many of these lines, so make sure its the one beneath that heading) -- I'd like to know that number that follows it.
Thanks,
jdobbs

Thanks for your replied.
Since I also have CCE Basic I configured it in DVD-RB.
Here is what I have now isntall:
- Versions:
-- CCE Basic Version: 2.69.1.4
-- DECODER Version: 1.0.1.0
-- AVISYNTH Version: 2.5.5.0
I'm doing a backup now with this configuration. DVD-RB is in Phase I.
I'll let you know if I get the same error or diferent or not error at all.

Rebuilder just went into phase 2. It opened CCE windows and started creating the m2v files...
I'll keep you posted.
Thank you for your interest in this matter.

Thanks. But I'd still like to see that value if possible. CCE v2.70 is having some problems with certain types of encodes, and I'm trying to find ways to make it work.

I also had a problem with DVD-RB undersizing the output for the movie Darkness. I used DVD-RB 0.84 free and CCE SP 2.70.02.00 Trial. I used menushrink and pgcedit to blank the previews and trailer, but this process hasn't caused a problem with the other couple of DVDs I used to test DVD-RB. Here's the PREPARTION log:
[02:57:24] Phase I, PREPARATION started.
- "Steal Space from Extras" mode is enabled.
- VTS_01: 3,119,906 sectors.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V file
-- Processed 147,148 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- VTS_04: 164,949 sectors.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V file
-- Embedded null records found
-- Processed 12,293 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 69.3%
- Overall bitrate : 5,032Kbs
- Space for Video : 4,084,902KB
- Movie improvement from extra reduction = 1.9%
- HIGH/LOW/AVERAGE Cell Bitrates: 5,625/786/5,032 Kbs
[03:02:39] Phase I, PREPARATION completed in 5 minutes.
The VTS_01 VOBs before encoding totaled 6,240,392 KB less the 280,000 KB French audio I had DVD-RB remove equals 5,960,392 KB. After encoding the VTS-01 VOBs totaled 3,796,874 KB. Which is a reduction to 64% and I think it actually should have been somewhere around 71.20%.

@McMadman
Sorry, but I can't predict what is going to happen when you use other tools on the source. I couldn't possibly debug it. Please run DVD Rebuilder alone and see if it sizes properly...
As for the reduction... it is calculated based upon the size of the original, the size of the target output, all the "as-is" VTSs, the audio that is to be removed, and the video that will be reduced.
I'm running the NTSC version of "Darkness" as I type this.

I know that you can't debug if third party software is used to edit source before using DVD-RB. My final backup of Darkness (even though it was under 4.0 GB) looks and works fine, so I wasn't going to put it in as a problem. However, since Ppower posted that he/she had a problem with DVD-RB over compressing Darkness, I thought I would post also in case there was something special with this movie that was causing a problem. I am a complete noob, but the overall bitrate of 5,032 kbs is quite a bit higher than any of the other movies I've backed up with DVD-RB. Is there some type of Max bitrate cap that doesn't exist in the prepare/analysis phase, but occurs in the encoding phase? Just a thought from an ignorant person.

@GMA77 and others
If you're using the freeware version you may want to download the latest version (v0.85). It has a couple of adjustments in it to help prevent CCE v2.70 from crashing and leaving you without a .M2V file.
It will probably make it to Afterdawn later today or tomorrow -- but you can get it now at http://www.dvd-rb.com or http://info.dvd-rb.com.

Can you tell me what setting I need to apply to do a high-quality OPV encode with Hanks encoder. I am using DVD-Rebuilder Pro 0.87.

Just select it under the HC options. DVD-RB will take care of the rest. One pass encoding is different than multipass. It works toward a constant quality (quantizer) (CQ) setting. It will use whatever bitrate it needs to get that quality (as long as it doesn't exceed the maximum). DVD-RB will run some passes using 1% of the source to get a prediction as to what the highest CQ is that will fit on a DVD-5 for that DVD...
For right now, I wouldn't recommend using OPV with any of the "movie only" options. The CQ value calculation is done before those changes are instituted. That will change in future versions of DVD-RB.

I made a couple of succesful backups using 87a but I didn't get another chance to try it again because jdobbs released .88. In fact that's been the modality of late. I've yet to have a version that has failed me.

Thanks, Soph... I hope I'm not sending out too many versions -- I'm anxious to kill the remaining Gremlins so I can finish tighten down the hatches for v1.00.
@Ppower
I just did Darkness tonight. No issues, but it did come in a little small (4.03GB) -- I'm going to look at it tomorrow to see why.

I'll get a copy of "Darkness" and check it out and just to be fare I'll go Back to .87a to do the encode.
For those that seem to be having some minor problems, remember the quality of your hardware, setup, correct versions (donate a few dollars to get them regularly), and file paths can make all the difference in success.
