Reading somewhere that you require a sky freesat card to use with your Dreambox 500S to receive sky channels using my existing sky dish, is this correct?

no mate as I told ya already, you connect the box directly to the dish and use CS or go FTA

correct, you'll get all the BBC's incl HD, ITV, Channel 4, E4, Film 4, as well as lots of rubbish channels (shopping) & the like,..no card,CS or internet connection required for FTA.

all you need now is the 800HD :-0, a few guys on DW have ordered from this guy, about the best price I've seen, includes shipping, also as with all 800's you can pop in a cable tuner if ever the N3 issue gets sorted ;-),..here's a very hand site for dish installations.

it has a DVI connection, comes with a DVI to HDMI cable.

just use dreambox control centre (dcc) enter ip address of ur box etc then ftp ur line to ur cccam.cfg file..
