I used the Butterfly Effect because I ripped it and backed it using RB/CCE without a single problem.

It was a good movie and that's why I didn't edit it. The premise of the movie is based on the "Chaos Theory." Does the air moved from a single flap of a butterflies wing in Soth America cause a hurrican somewhere else in the world?

I had tried 2 Ked Kellys and the file was in the same spot that had the problem. If the defect was part of the disc then it wouldn't have read smoothly with no retries when I was using DVDdecrypter and Anydvd at 1x. This method doesn't work when there is a visible defect on the DVD.
Bigorange,
What are you using to read the DVD? Is DVDdecrypter verifying that the drive is actually reading at 1x?
My Nec 1300s can be set to 1x but the log shows that the actual is 2x.

I liked Butterfly effect. I watched the alternate endings but wasn't so happy with the directors cut ending.

When I said defective pressing I meant that every DVD off that same line also got the defect. Standalone DVD players can overlook some errors and continue playing as though nothing was wrong but a ripper will catch it.

I was thinking a defective pressing wouldn't backup at all where as Ned Kelly will.

No it's possible to get around some bad pressings, I've done it before but the best case scenario is to get a copy that has no defect.

An after thought. Pete and drchips stated that there was problem with DVD Decrypter ripping the movie K-19 The Wido wmaker. It was their contention that Decrpter somehow damaged the IFO file. I got a copy of the movie ripped with Decrypter and used RB/CCE to encode. I had to provied proof that I'd succeded before Pete believed me.

Also If these were bad pressings then in the past month they have been putting out a lot of bad ones. Just a few months ago I had only seen one brand new movie with an invisible defect that would stop the backup. I have seen 5 here recently.

Luckily I have been able to backup all of the invisible defect movies so far with some additional time and effort.

soph, I am pretty sure this was an intentional read error to prevent ripping, not just a bad press.
6402.... My drive read is HL-DT-STRW/DVD GCC-4480B, and to tell the truth It's been so far back I don't remember the specifics. I actually went and got another copy at a different place after getting a refund on my first one. I believe I did save the file from the 1st one to send to mackem x as he wanted to look at it.

For what it's worth, I've backed up and edited with Remake all three of these (Butterfly, Ned Kelly, and K-19) without incident.
I am trying to back up War & Peace right now. I hit a defect at the same place everytime. Nothing I can do, including a 1x rip, works.
I am wondering if there is some program out there which could "interpolate" data on a movie disc?

I would be interested in know if others have the same difficulty with War And Peace that you're having. If anyone out there reads this and have tried to back up war and peace could you tell us about it?

I believe there is only one version of the 1956 movie starring Henry Fonda and Audry Hepburn. It is a single disc, and the error was in the 05 sector. I did skip it, and all the others were OK.

Well, maybe there is a "test marketing" program going on now with the new movies to see how we all react to a physical form of copy protection? I am more inclind to think it is a defective pressing. Realising movie DVD's use a mechanical process, and die erosion, inclusions/impurities in the tool steel, and other defects are inevitable, I am surprised we don't see a lot more of this kind of problem.

We probably do see more errors but we're unaffected by them.

Just FYI. My personal copy of Ned Kelly has the error and so did two copies I checked out from Blockbuster -- all the exact same sector, and all play fine on a standalone.

All the more reason for my stubborn side to give it a try, besides I've already ordered the movie. I'll let you know how it worked out when I get it.

Is anyone trying the new Anydvd beta for this problem. So far I have been getting good results when the problem arises. It is the 4.0.3.2 beta. You do need to check the box to remove the bad sector copyright protection.
It is suppose to be checked by default but it wasn't on mine.

I have it installed but I've not been in a position to determine its benefits. Truth is if it weren't for the posts in our threads, I'd never know there was a problem with RB/CCE at all.

Sophocles,
No problems were indicated with DVDrebuilder. Just the rip.
Since you don't have a disc with the error to test I figure you'll wait for Ned Kelly.
I was hoping that Doc and Bigorange and jdobbs would test it out on their problem DVDs.
