It's noteworthy that this thread has moved through some historic times in terms of DVD backups.

1. Recode was revised more than once.
2. DVDXCopy Express went T.U.
3. DVD2One came out with version 1.5
4. Shrink actually launched a transcoder with enough of a change to be called a new product.
5. IC7 became IC8
6. Intervideo came out with DVDCopy2
7. DVD Decrypter was revised 2 or 3 times
8. Folks became aware of several re-authoring programs,

and most important (and the winner of the contest if you want to call it that), a DVD Rebuilder-CCE user group was spawned from this thread.

All this in 4 months. Things change.

This is true, this Thread brought out a lot of products that would probably not had light shine on them, and most of them are pretty good (DVD Copy 2, and IC8 inparticularly) it also let people know about how easy (with Vurbals guide(s), many thanks to him) RB/CCE can be to use.

My final vote(s):
If you have time: RB/CCE
If not : DVD Copy 2 Platinum

EDIT: Did copy with Shrink, and found that Copy gives good results faster then Shink 3.2

I would think if your in a hurry DVDshrink isn't very fast unless your in low quality mode which kind of defeats the purpose.
DVDcopy2 is fast and good at the same time.

Anyway, if I'm in a hurry I kick a few extra computers on the RBfarm. A lot faster than shrink.

With batch mode it's hard to get into much of a hurry. You can do several movies overnight with or without RBfarm.

I just did a test on one of the kid's movies, because I usually don't send them through RB-CCE ... or do any editing either:

Using AnyDVD to start on a 6.5 GB DVD, I used DVD2One 1.5 to encode in 24 minutes, and burned in 14 min at 4x. The quality was great. I then decided to try a quick Shrink to compare. Not so good. It took about 5 minutes longer, and the quality was noticabley less. In fact, the DVD2One quality is better than what I've come to expect out of a 2-1/2 hour Shrink deep analysis with enhancements.

While the Farm is great for encoding...and I hope to be on it soon...there is a fair amount of time spent getting a file ready for RB-CCE. With a lot of the kid's movies, I find I can take the quick and easy route with AnyDVD and DVD2One.

DVDCopy2 to 30% compression
Over 30% compression RB/CCE
Nero with Recode2 for older movies to 30%
3.2 DVD Shrink
DVDXCopy Platinum
DVD2One
Alcohol 120%

All of these tools do an excellent job and I use them all. I'm still learning some others. RB/CCE is a standout because it gives great encoding results and at compression levels where the others falter. I like all the others for various reasons and they all produce excellent quality movies. So, my choice is 1 and 6 more. Other than RB/CCE being really good, this thread will never come to a complete agreement because you have the human factor and some excellent software products. We all have or favorites for various reasons. Surprised we even come close on the RB.

The main agreement comes when high levels of compression are required. It wins the quality race by a long shot.

I liked DVDCopy2 until I tried one of the older movies. That's where DVD2One really stood out. Since I was just using the DVDCopy2 trial, I decided not to purchase it on this basis.

It is interesting how we all approach the smaller encodes differently. It is nice to hae the software and knowledge from the pre RB-CCE days.

Hmm!

Not so different, I began as a DVD2one man and I still use it on older movies when I need a quick backup at less than 20% or it's for my wife. My main backups are done with RB/CCE but again if I'm looking at low compression and on a recent movie then I use DVDcopy2, you just can't beat the speed and quality combo.

Sophocles...do I remember reading a post somewhere that you had a problem with DVDCopy2, and that you were having difficulty getting a response on it from Intervideo? Or was that another program, or maybe someone else I'm thinking about?

Doc you read right but it only happened on a couple of older movies and I figured that it was result of copy2's high bitrate compression on older movies that came with artifacts. But I still use it and when it gets it right it really gets it right. Its also useful for several other formats all of which have their use.

1)We all agree RB/CCE, whew! Finally!

2)DVDCopy 2 another great one, not so good with older movies.

3)Here's where it gets a little shakey. For me InstantCopy 8 used with DvdReMake, that app has amazing quality, but the editing ain't so hot.

4)Finally, I'm coming in with the new Shrink 3.2, the new shrink is absolutely a wonderful app and the fact it's free, wells, hats off Mr. Shrink

This is 4 months later, and after all the updates, and the dust has settled, this is what rings my chimes :)

BTW, I can't believe it, we're actually back on topic. ;)

The satelite weather map that showed Ivan made it look like the outside of the storm swept through your area - which would have meant a lot of rain and moderately high winds.

I was just kidding...both times. Big-O, I'm wondering about your opinion about Shrink? It is a good product with da and sharp, but that's 2-1/2 hours. Do you use it for shorter encodes?

There's this thread on CD Freaks that's trying to be the biggest thread on the net, and the deal was that nothing had to make sense. Here at least we mostly made sense, we actually helped people, and we had a lot of fun and didn't do it for the numbers. We got here naturally, but I say let's use this thread as our safety valve.

I agree - it's a good safety valve. I would really like to keep the "Are You" thread as an archive, also. The fact that it is a little messed up now is no reason to throw out its original purpose. I'm wondering if there isn't some house cleaning all of us could do?

I agree but I'd like to keep the "Are You Thread," clean a little longer. You weren't there when Vurbal, Donald, jdobbs, and I got into a debate over lines of resolution. Vurbal was going to lock the thread until we all got nice again. I started another thread (lines of resolution)just to take the pressure off this one. I have a feeling it's going to catch up anyway. It may already be in the top 5 or less and its mostly information.

He's most certainly our mod and with us all the way.

The eye in the sky as they say.

Concerning transcoders, it seemed like new ones were being hatched fairly frequently. I haven't heard about any new ones. I'm wondering why there haven't been any new entries into the market?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the growing popularity of RB-CCE? It is becoming clear that RB-CCE has the attention of those serious about quality.
